On a desktop Mac mini, you can turn off the display without putting the Mac to sleep: set the display-off timer in System Settings > Lock Screen, then enable System Settings > Energy > Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. Your encoder can keep running while the screen is dark. Apple cautions that preventing sleep can increase power use.
Set up and test the YouTube stream first
- Confirm YouTube Live is enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Configure the encoder. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Keep it private and reset it if compromised using YouTube’s stream-key settings.
- Choose settings for your connection. YouTube’s encoder settings guide lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Select resolution and bitrate for the output you intend to send and the stable upload capacity you have measured; there is no single upload-speed figure established for every stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream to and through Google’s servers.
- Preview before relying on an unattended run. Start a test, check the preview and stream-health indicators in Live Control Room, and inspect representative audio and video. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health in its live-streaming tips. A successful test does not guarantee uninterrupted operation later.
Turn off the display while keeping the Mac awake
Use the desktop Mac settings
- On the Mac mini, open Apple menu > System Settings > Lock Screen.
- Set Turn display off on power adapter when inactive to the interval you want. The display timer controls the screen, not whether the encoder is allowed to run.
- Open System Settings > Energy and turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off.
- Let the display turn off, then check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room from another device or after waking the display to confirm the stream is still live.
Apple’s current Mac sleep-settings guide describes these as separate controls on desktop Macs. Options and wording may differ by Mac and macOS release; consult the guide for the installed version if a label is missing. Apple warns that delaying or preventing sleep may increase power consumption.

Use a temporary Terminal command instead
For a temporary run, open Terminal and enter caffeinate -i. Keep the Terminal process running while the encoder is active; press Control-C when you want the command to end. The -i option prevents idle system sleep. Do not add -d if you want the display to turn off, because that option prevents display sleep. See Apple’s caffeinate command reference.

This command only addresses idle sleep. It does not protect the stream from power or network loss, encoder crashes, macOS updates, or interruptions at YouTube.

Plan for monitoring, recovery, and archives
- Check stream health during the run. A Mac configured to stay awake is not an uptime guarantee. Arrange periodic checks of the encoder, network connection, audio/video, and YouTube stream-health status.
- Do not assume a 24-hour stream becomes one complete archive. YouTube says all streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived; that statement does not promise what happens to every stream lasting longer than 12 hours. If a full recording matters, investigate current YouTube archival behavior and plan segmented broadcasts or independent local recording and storage. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
- Account for power use. Keeping the Mac awake while inactive may use more electricity than allowing it to sleep. Apple identifies this as a trade-off, not a defect.
Troubleshoot a stream that stops or disappears
