A church’s YouTube Live page usually says “Waiting for Encoder” because YouTube has not yet received a usable video and audio feed from the encoder. Creating or scheduling the broadcast sets up the event; a computer or hardware encoder must still send the stream to YouTube. Start by checking that the encoder is running and has a valid camera or media input.
What “Waiting for Encoder” means
YouTube’s live workflow has two parts: the broadcast event and the incoming feed. The event can be prepared or scheduled while no video is being sent. A title, thumbnail, scheduled time, or open watch page does not generate the live picture or sound; an encoder or sending service has to transmit them. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes configuring the encoder, starting the stream from it, and checking that YouTube receives the feed.

The wording can also appear as a device-specific status. For example, the Cobalt 9992-ENC manual defines “Waiting for Encoder” as the encoder not attempting to connect to the RTMP server. Its manual also distinguishes that from a running encoder that cannot connect. Those definitions apply to that Cobalt product, not automatically to every YouTube screen or encoder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck these things first, in order
- Start the encoder output. In the church’s streaming software or hardware encoder, verify that streaming or encoding has actually begun. Preparing the YouTube event alone will leave it waiting.
- Confirm there is a usable source. Check that the camera, capture card, video mixer, or media source is connected and selected. Look at the encoder’s local preview or input status. A stopped encoder or missing or invalid input can prevent it from generating a feed.
- Make sure output is enabled and aimed at the right stream. Confirm that the encoder is set to send to the intended YouTube destination and uses the stream information for that broadcast. Check any output-enable or connect setting; on the Cobalt 9992-ENC, RTMP output configured not to connect is one documented reason for its waiting state.
- Determine whether it is stopped or running but disconnected. If the encoder reports that it is running but cannot connect, inspect the destination and RTMP parameters, then the network path and DNS/name resolution. The Cobalt manual lists an unreachable server, incorrect RTMP parameters, and failure to resolve the server name as possible causes for its “Not Connected” state. Other encoders may use different labels, so follow their status details.
- Check YouTube’s incoming preview and stream health. Once output is running, confirm that YouTube receives video and audio. If YouTube flags the feed, compare its format and bitrate with the current YouTube encoder settings guidance; recommendations can change.
- Change the stream key or hardware only after those checks. A wrong destination or key is possible, but “Waiting for Encoder” by itself does not prove that the key is wrong. First establish whether the encoder is running, has input, and is attempting to send.
Use the status to choose the next fix
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Encoder is stopped or no local preview appears | Start encoding and verify the selected camera or media input, its connection, and the encoder’s input status. |
| Encoder is running but not connected | Check the selected destination and RTMP parameters, then network reachability and DNS/name resolution. |
| YouTube receives the feed but reports a problem | Read YouTube’s stream-health message and compare output format and bitrate with its current encoder settings recommendations. |
| The event is scheduled, but no encoder is sending | Start the encoder. Scheduling the event does not start a sender or create a video/audio feed. |
What the message does—and does not—tell you
- It points to a missing expected encoder feed; it does not show that the encoder is running.
- It does not, by itself, establish that the stream key is wrong, that YouTube is down, or that the church needs new equipment.
- A manufacturer’s status definition may describe that encoder’s internal state rather than YouTube’s page. Use the exact status and error details shown by the equipment or software in use.
- A scheduled start time and broadcast metadata describe the event; they do not send the picture and sound.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the church’s separate goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is an option for that use case—not a fix for a stopped camera encoder, missing live input, or a sender that cannot connect. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and gives the first day free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded-video playback, not live camera feeds. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
