A Chrome screenshot records the text Chrome actually rendered—not simply the font-weight number in your CSS. The requested weight may be matched to a different available font face, the intended font file may not have loaded, or the screenshot may have been rendered with different device and capture settings. Without the page, image, and capture details, there is no way to identify one specific cause; the checks below narrow it down.
Check the page’s computed font settings
In Chrome, open DevTools, inspect the text element, and check its computed font-family and font-weight. Look for inherited styles and media-query rules that may change either value at the viewport used for the screenshot. The computed weight tells you what CSS requests, but it does not prove which font face rendered the characters. MDN’s font-weight reference describes the property and its behavior.

normalcorresponds to weight400;boldcorresponds to700.- If the requested weight is not available in a static font family, CSS weight matching can select another available weight. The rendered face may therefore differ from the number shown in computed styles.
- Check whether a responsive rule, a more specific selector, or an inherited declaration changes the family or weight in the capture’s viewport.
Confirm which font face actually loaded
Check that the intended font file loaded successfully, then compare its actual weight with the @font-face descriptor. A static font file should be declared with the weight it represents; a variable font can be declared with a supported weight range. If the descriptor is inaccurate, CSS may match the request to a face differently than you expect. See the MDN @font-face reference for how faces and weight ranges are described.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Also check whether the family has separate files for the weights your page uses, and whether the CSS family name matches the family declared for those files. If the requested face is unavailable, Chrome can render a fallback instead. A fallback’s design may make the same nominal weight look heavier or lighter.

Make the screenshot conditions comparable
Before comparing a screenshot with what you see in a browser window, record the conditions that produced each image. Differences in rendering setup can change the pixels and make text appear different even when the page’s CSS is unchanged.
- Chrome version and operating system: record both; the installed fonts and rendering environment may differ.
- Viewport and browser zoom: use the same viewport dimensions and zoom, and check whether responsive CSS changes the text style.
- Device pixel ratio (DPR): match the DPR used to render the page and capture. DevTools device controls expose viewport and DPR settings.
- Capture method and scaling: note whether the image came from a viewport screenshot, full-page capture, DevTools Protocol, an automation tool, or an operating-system screen grab. Capture scale can affect the output dimensions and pixels. Chromium’s screenshot implementation handles emulation and requested screenshot size using scale factors; details can change between revisions. See the Chromium page capture source.
Chrome DevTools describes device mode as a first-order approximation of a mobile device, not a substitute for the real hardware. If the discrepancy matters on a particular phone or tablet, verify it on that physical device. See Chrome’s device mode documentation.

Compare two captures methodically
For a useful comparison, hold the conditions constant and change one variable at a time. Save the original screenshot and record how it was made before adjusting anything.
Recommended Free Tools
- Use the same page state, text element, viewport dimensions, and zoom for both captures.
- Record the computed family and weight for that element in each environment.
- Verify which font face or file supplied the text, and confirm its declared weight or variable range.
- Match the operating system, Chrome version, available fonts, and DPR where possible.
- Use the same capture method and output scaling. If the images still differ, inspect the page’s font-loading state and compare the files and settings available from each environment.
This process separates a CSS request from the face that rendered it, while also controlling the capture variables. The documentation explains these mechanisms, but only the affected page and its capture artifacts can establish which one caused a particular mismatch.

For a repeatable capture, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. Its cleanup steps accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents.
Example using cURL (replace the URL with your page and use your API key):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options and setup. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

Common causes and fixes
| What you observe | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Computed weight looks right, but the text looks too bold or too light. | The computed value is a request, not proof of the selected face. | Verify the loaded font file and the family’s available weights and fallbacks. |
| The intended web font seems absent. | Whether its file loaded and whether its family name and @font-face weight descriptor match. |
Correct the declaration or font-loading problem, then capture again under the same conditions. |
| The mismatch appears only at certain viewport sizes. | Responsive rules, inherited styles, and active media queries. | Compare computed styles at the exact capture viewport. |
| The mismatch appears only between a screenshot tool and a visible browser window. | DPR, zoom, viewport, capture method, and output scaling. | Align those settings and repeat the capture. |
| A simulated mobile capture differs from a physical device. | Device-mode emulation versus actual hardware and its installed fonts. | Check the page on the physical device if that device is the target. |
