A black screen during an MP4 handoff means there is a moment when usable video stops reaching the viewer, but the symptom alone does not identify the cause. The interruption could begin in the file switch or source, in the encoder’s output, or in YouTube’s ingest path. First check whether the encoder preview also goes black; that separates the most useful troubleshooting paths.
Find where the picture first disappears
Watch the encoder preview at the same time as the YouTube stream, and note whether audio continues, how long the picture is missing, and whether it happens at every file change. These observations help isolate the stage at fault; they are not a YouTube diagnostic procedure.

- The encoder preview also goes black: investigate the source handoff. Confirm that both MP4 files exist and play, then observe whether switching files restarts the source or briefly leaves the scene without active video.
- The preview stays normal but YouTube goes black: investigate the encoder’s outgoing video and the ingest path rather than assuming the MP4 itself is faulty.
- Audio continues: record that detail along with the blackout’s duration and repeatability. It helps describe what fails, but does not by itself prove a particular cause.
Keep a short log for several handoffs: time, file pair, preview status, audio status, blackout duration, switching method, and whether the stream uses RTMP or HLS. That makes a recurring transition easier to compare without guessing at a hardware fix.

Confirm the source remains available
Check that both completed MP4s are playable and accessible to the software handling the playlist, scene, script, or other switching method. Observe the transition itself: does the current source stop before the next one becomes active, or does switching restart a process? The title does not specify the method, so the exact control or setting depends on the encoder in use.

Inspect format and keyframes without assuming they are the cause
OBS explains that MP4 and MOV files require finalization, so an interrupted write can leave a file unrecoverable. It contrasts this with HLS, which uses separate TS files and a playlist describing how a player reads them. This is useful context when checking file integrity and handoff design, but it does not establish that switching between completed MP4 files should cause a black screen. OBS’s audio and video formats guide describes these behaviors.
If OBS is the encoder, check that the keyframe interval is consistent. OBS says consistency can help YouTube’s automatic quality selector transition smoothly between quality options. Treat that as a setting worth inspecting, not as a confirmed fix for this particular blackout. OBS’s transcoding guidance explains the recommendation.

If the stream uses HLS, verify HLS requirements
Do not apply these checks unless the stream actually uses HLS ingestion. YouTube’s HLS setup documentation calls for TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST or PUT. Google’s developer guide specifies muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and support for frame rates up to 60 fps. Compare the actual outgoing segments and playlist with those requirements rather than assuming the setup is compliant. YouTube Help: HLS setup · YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.
These are HLS-specific requirements; the question does not establish whether this channel uses HLS or RTMP. They do not diagnose a particular stream without its configuration and observed output.

Use a repeatable troubleshooting sequence
- Reproduce and record the handoff. Note the two files, switching method, time, blackout duration, audio behavior, and whether the problem happens on every change.
- Compare preview with YouTube playback. If both go black, focus first on file availability and source switching. If only YouTube does, focus on encoder output and ingest.
- Check the media inputs. Play each completed MP4 and confirm the switching method can access both. Observe whether the switch creates a gap or restarts the source.
- Check encoder settings relevant to the output. If using OBS, inspect the output format and the consistency of the keyframe interval; do not treat either as a proven cause without evidence from the stream.
- Identify the ingest protocol. For HLS only, inspect segment duration, playlist behavior, transport, container, codecs, and GOP against YouTube’s published specifications. Do not use HLS rules to troubleshoot an RTMP stream.
- Compare multiple handoffs. Look for a repeatable pattern tied to a particular file, transition method, or preview-versus-playback difference before changing the setup.
What the kids’ channel context does—and does not—tell you
The available technical documentation does not establish a kids-specific YouTube behavior that causes a black screen at an MP4 change. A channel’s audience designation therefore is not, by itself, an explanation for this transition symptom. This troubleshooting question also does not establish that any particular copyright or reused-content issue is involved; the technical observations above are needed to locate the interruption.
