Why Do Website Screenshots Differ Between Monitoring Runs?

Screenshot differences can come from live page data, capture timing, fonts, browser versions, or viewport changes. Diagnose the source before changing a baseline or widening comparison tolerances.

Website screenshots differ between monitoring runs because a screenshot records a page at one moment in one rendering environment. The page’s data or state may have changed, capture may have happened at a different point in loading or animation, or the browser and operating system may have rendered it differently. A changed image is a signal to investigate—not proof that a code change caused a regression.

What can change a screenshot between runs?

Different rendering environments

The same page can render differently across operating systems, browser versions, settings, hardware, power conditions, or headless and headed browser modes. Fonts are another frequent source of variation: a missing font or a fallback font can change text width, line breaks, element height, and the layout below it. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with these environment factors in its visual comparisons documentation.

Viewport dimensions and browser choice are part of the test conditions, too. A comparison intended to measure repeatability should use a fixed viewport and consistent browser environment. If the goal is to test different browsers, operating systems, or responsive widths, treat each as a separate target with its own appropriate baseline rather than comparing unlike conditions as if they were the same test.

Capture at a different point in page loading

A page may still be fetching data, loading fonts or images, hydrating client-side content, or re-rendering when the screenshot is taken. An early capture can therefore show a loading placeholder, incomplete text, or an intermediate layout. Animations and transitions can also put an element in a different position or appearance from one run to the next.

Wait for a condition that confirms the specific content under test is present, rather than relying only on a fixed delay. Cypress’s guidance is: “Take a snapshot only after you confirm the page is done changing.” It also recommends generating and comparing screenshots in the same environment with a fixed viewport. See Cypress visual testing documentation.

Live or personalized page content

A screenshot can change even when the application code does not. API responses, advertisements, timestamps, recommendations, rotating promotions, chat widgets, and user-specific content can vary between visits. Confirm the route and user state are the intended ones, and use repeatable fixtures for API responses when that is appropriate to the test.

Some differences are real product changes, while others are incidental. Decide whether a volatile region matters to the requirement being tested before excluding it.

How to diagnose a flaky screenshot comparison

  1. Verify the page and state. Check that the run reached the intended route, authentication state, and important content. If data is changing, make the response deterministic with fixtures where practical.
  2. Verify capture timing. Wait for an assertion that proves the target content is present. Check for late font or image loads, asynchronous re-rendering, transitions, and animations that may still be running.
  3. Align rendering conditions. Record the browser and version, operating system or CI image, headless mode, relevant settings, and viewport. Keep those conditions aligned between baseline creation and comparison. For deliberately different targets, keep target-specific baselines.
  4. Inspect the changed region. Determine whether the change is an ad, widget, timestamp, or other live value, and whether that content is part of what the test is meant to protect. Stabilize it if possible.
  5. Review the difference before updating the baseline. Decide whether the change is intended, a defect, or rendering noise. Approving a new baseline without identifying the cause can make a genuine regression harder to spot.

Make comparisons stable without hiding real defects

Prefer deterministic test conditions

  • Use the same browser, version, viewport, operating system or CI image, and relevant browser settings for baseline and subsequent runs.
  • Use controlled API fixtures for data that otherwise changes between runs.
  • Wait for the application state the test actually cares about; avoid treating an arbitrary sleep as proof that the page is ready.
  • Where animation is irrelevant to the test, disable it or wait for it to finish before capture.

Keep masks narrow

If a small region cannot reasonably be controlled, mask only that region. Cypress recommends masking a small area rather than raising the failure threshold for an entire page. Broad tolerances can conceal meaningful changes to layout, fonts, or color, while a narrow mask preserves more of the comparison’s signal. Playwright’s PageAssertions documentation covers screenshot comparison assertions and related options; check the documentation for the version and configuration you use.

Separate repeatability from cross-platform coverage

A test that asks “did this page change in our standard Chrome environment?” has a different target from one asking “does this page behave correctly across browsers and responsive widths?” Keep a stable target for run-to-run regression checks, and add distinct browser or viewport targets when cross-browser coverage is required. A hosted visual review workflow can be useful when a team needs browser- and viewport-specific rendering with shared review; Cypress describes Percy as one example, but whether that workflow fits depends on the team’s requirements.
