A source supplies typed data such as hand joints or controller pose; a robot- or task-specific retargeter converts it into an end-effector pose, gripper command, or dexterous-hand joint targets. The graph separates how motion is captured from how a particular robot should use it.
How does hand tracking become robot motion?
The documented architecture is a sequence of interfaces, not a one-to-one connection between a human joint and a robot joint:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Capture: A headset, controller, glove, tracker, pedal, or joint-space device provides motion or control data.
- Expose the input: A source node makes that device data available in a typed form, such as hand joints or controller pose.
- Retarget: A retargeter applies a mapping and configuration suited to the robot or task.
- Deliver an action: The graph produces robot-facing outputs for use by a simulator or a robot-control interface.
This separation matters because a tracked hand pose is not automatically a robot command. The retargeter determines what the input means for the chosen embodiment. NVIDIA’s Retargeting Interface documents the available source and retargeter types.

Hands and controllers
HandsSource exposes left- and right-hand tracking, with 26 joints per hand. ControllersSource exposes controller data such as grip pose, trigger, and thumbstick. These are distinct input modalities: hand tracking supplies articulated hand information, while a controller can provide a tracked pose and control signals.

Other tracked devices
The reference also lists sources for head pose, three-axis pedals, generic joint-state devices such as leader arms or exoskeletons, and full-body pose. NVIDIA’s Isaac Teleop overview describes a broader framework for XR headsets, gloves, foot pedals, and body trackers, alongside visualization and markerless reconstruction features.
If you are setting up headset-based teleoperation, check tracking support and software compatibility for the exact Isaac release, runtime, and robot stack you plan to use. The listed device categories do not establish compatibility for every headset and configuration.

What robot commands can retargeters produce?
| Retargeter | Input and purpose | Documented output |
|---|---|---|
Se3AbsRetargeter |
Hand or controller tracking mapped to an absolute end-effector pose. | Position plus quaternion, represented as a 7D pose. |
Se3RelRetargeter |
Hand or controller tracking mapped to a relative end-effector change. | Position delta plus a rotation vector, represented as a 6D change. |
GripperRetargeter |
A controller trigger or thumb–index pinch distance mapped to gripper control. | A scalar: -1.0 means closed and 1.0 means open in the documented convention. |
DexHandRetargeter and DexBiManualRetargeter |
26-joint hand tracking mapped to robot-specific dexterous-hand targets. | Robot hand joint angles, using the dex-retargeting library. |
Absolute pose versus relative motion
An absolute-pose mapping expresses a target pose directly. A relative mapping expresses a change in position and rotation. The interface allows configuration such as hand or controller selection and target offsets; the relative retargeter also exposes position and rotation scaling and smoothing parameters. These are configurable mapping options, not accuracy guarantees.

Grippers and dexterous hands
A scalar gripper command is a simpler output than a set of articulated hand-joint targets. A pinch-distance input or controller trigger can drive the documented gripper mapping; dexterous retargeters instead map tracked hand articulation to the target robot hand’s joint angles. The right choice depends on the robot embodiment and what the task needs the hand to do.

How does a session run?
The session guide describes a manager that creates and configures trackers, sets up an OpenXR session, initializes plugins, runs the retargeting pipeline, and handles cleanup. By default, stepping is synchronous. An optional pipelined mode can return results corresponding to the latest completed frame, which developers should account for when reasoning about which input frame produced an output.
NVIDIA’s Quick Start describes a headset workflow involving CloudXR, an Isaac Teleop retargeting pipeline, and Isaac Lab simulation. The documented example processes live hand or controller data and prints gripper commands. These interface and workflow descriptions do not establish latency, accuracy, safety, or task success on a particular setup.

Does Isaac Teleop work with real robots?
NVIDIA’s documentation says the framework is not limited to simulation and describes use with real robots and ROS 2 pipelines. That indicates a documented deployment scope, not proof that every robot, headset, runtime, or ROS 2 configuration has been tested together. A practical evaluation should therefore be specific to the intended hardware, software versions, retargeting configuration, and control interface.

What do NVIDIA’s robot examples establish?
NVIDIA’s Isaac Lab 2.3 release blog names Meta Quest VR support and describes dexterous retargeting examples for the Unitree G1’s three-finger and Inspire five-finger hands. It also discusses improved upper-body control for Fourier GR1T2 and Unitree G1 using a Pink IK controller. These release examples illustrate that input device and robot embodiment are separate choices; they are not a compatibility matrix for every Isaac Teleop or Isaac Capture release. See the Isaac Lab 2.3 release article.

Which version name and Python package should you use?
NVIDIA’s current Isaac Lab documentation page is titled “Isaac Capture” and records a name transition from Isaac Teleop. The page says Isaac Lab documentation pins release 1.4 and therefore retains the isaacteleop distribution and import names; upstream renamed them to isaaccapture in version 1.6. Treat the names as version-specific rather than interchangeable. Confirm the release documentation for your installation before using package names or setup instructions. See Isaac Lab’s Isaac Capture documentation.
How should you compare teleoperation setups?
Rather than comparing devices in isolation, assess the complete mapping path:
- Input modality: tracked hand, controller, or a joint-space device.
- Output representation: absolute pose, relative motion, gripper scalar, or hand-joint targets.
- Target embodiment: the robot and the retargeter configured for it.
- Deployment environment: simulation, a real robot, or a ROS 2 pipeline.
The reviewed NVIDIA documentation describes these interfaces and examples but does not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark or numerical performance comparison.
