Tall grass can make a good hiding place, but it is only one stealth mechanic. It gets frustrating when it is the only meaningful answer to enemy detection: crouch in the patch, wait for a patrol, then move to the next patch. Better stealth gives players clear rules and several ways to act—using sightlines, height, sound, shadows, distractions, alternate routes, or concealment that interacts with movement.
Why does hiding in grass feel repetitive?
The problem is not foliage itself. It is a narrow loop in which the player’s main decision is whether to enter or leave a hiding patch. If concealment works like a binary switch and enemies offer little to read or influence, stealth can become waiting rather than planning.

That is a design critique, not a claim that most players dislike grass or that games use it more often than they used to. The useful question is whether a hiding place participates in a larger system: can the player understand what enemies notice, choose a different route or tool, and respond when a plan goes wrong?

Detection rules players can read
Players need to form a workable idea of what guards can see, hear, or investigate. Dishonored co-creator Harvey Smith described the game’s system as view-cone stealth: “We decided to go with ‘view cone’ based stealth. Enemies have a view cone. Their peripheral vision is weaker and they don’t see as well up high – it’s squashed so you can hide in the rafters.” He also clarified the limit of darkness: “The deal is that if you’re in front of their view cone they see you, no matter what the lighting levels.” In that model, a shadow is not automatically invisibility; facing and height matter too. More than one route or response
A stealth space becomes more interesting when it offers choices beyond hiding and waiting: another entrance, a higher route, a distraction, or a way to complete an objective without killing. Patrick Redding, then game director at Ubisoft Toronto, put the level-design goal this way: “Stealth — from a level design perspective — is not about avoidance,” he said. “Instead, it’s about building an ecosystem, and [that ecosystem] needs to feel like it has an existence outside of what the player is doing.” His point is that stealth can involve reading and influencing a living space, not just staying out of sight. (Game Developer’s April 15, 2013 summary of his GameSpot interview.)
Systems that work together
Concealment is distinct from cover: something can help keep a character unseen without necessarily stopping an attack. A 2013 University of Skövde thesis on stealth mechanics discusses different concealment forms, including camouflage, shadows, and crowds, alongside cover and sensory cues. For game design, that distinction matters. Grass can hide a player, while a wall may block a sightline, and a noisy surface may still give away movement. When those rules interact, players have more to consider than whether they are inside foliage.

How other stealth games show the value of choice
Dishonored: sightlines, height, and alternative solutions
Dishonored’s view-cone description makes geometry part of stealth. A player can consider whether to cross in front of an enemy, move outside the guard’s weaker peripheral vision, or use rafters where the enemy sees less well. Smith also described distraction and non-lethal approaches as alternatives that can require more patience or effort than killing a target. These options give the player different problems to solve rather than treating one hiding surface as the universal answer. The cited interview describes the design model; it does not establish that every encounter offers every option.
Splinter Cell: light and multiple paths
Ubisoft Toronto’s 2022 discussion of the Splinter Cell series describes dynamic lighting, darkness, and night-vision gadgets as parts of its stealth vocabulary. It also contrasts a more linear early level with Chaos Theory’s bank mission, where, in associate level design director Zavian Porter’s words, “There are multiple ways to enter the level and there are multiple ways to proceed through the bank itself.” Different routes create room for planning: the player can assess the space and choose an approach instead of relying on a single prescribed hiding spot.

- EXPANSIVE CAMPAIGN: Many real-world locations have been captured using photogrammetry to recreate a living, immersive environment, and multiple infiltration and extraction points and kill list targets provide a whole new perspective on each mission. Take on the Nazi plot solo or work with a partner, with improved co-op mechanics allowing you to share ammo and items, give orders and heal each other.
- ADVANCED GUNPLAY PHYSICS AND TRAVERSAL: Use ziplines, slide down slopes and shimmy along ledges to reach the perfect vantage point, or to sneak past a sharp-eyed lookout. Factor in rifle stock and barrel options along with gravity, wind and heart rate while you line up your sights on the target.
- HIGH CALIBRE CUSTOMISATION: Use workbenches to customise and upgrade virtually every aspect of your weapon – change scopes, stocks, barrels, magazines and more. Rifles, secondaries and pistols all have a huge variety of options. On top of that you can select the ammo to suit your target, from armour-piercing right down to non-lethal.
- INVASION MODE – CAMPAIGN DROP IN PvP AND CO-OP: Invade another player’s Campaign as an Axis sniper and engage in a deadly game of cat and mouse, providing a new dimension to the challenge as you stalk your prey. Alternatively, as Karl you can call for assistance and have a second sniper drop in to help you out of a tricky situation.
- TENSE ADVERSIAL MULTIPLAYER: Customise your character and loadout and earn XP, medals and ribbons as you take on intensely competitive 16 player battles that will really test your sharpshooting skills. If co-op’s more your style, you can team up with up to 3 other players against waves of enemies in Survival mode.
That same 2022 discussion described a remake as being built from the ground up and said the team wanted a full-game non-lethal option. Those were statements about development plans at the time, not confirmation of current release status or features.
Dishonored 2 and Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate: level layout as a choice
In a 2019 Game Developer feature, level designers discussed blockouts and iteration as ways to examine spatial design and player options. The feature describes multiple ways to enter rooms or approach objectives in Dishonored 2, and vertical routes and hiding places—including foliage and carts—in Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate. It also describes stealth and force as different ways to resolve conflict in the latter. The lesson is not that one title is categorically better: level geometry can make concealment one option among several.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: foliage with a broader stealth vocabulary
Foliage can be detailed and useful without carrying the whole stealth system. In a 2025 PlayStation Blog interview about the PS5 remake Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, creative producer Yuji Korekado said, “Metal Gear is a stealth game, so it’s crucial for players to be able to make precise movements.” He also said, “We devoted a lot of time modeling every fine detail like leaves, grass, and moss covering the ground.” The developers discussed those environments alongside camouflage choices and sound absorption that varies with walls and floors. In that design, grass is part of a wider set of movement, visual, and audio considerations—not evidence that foliage itself is the problem.
How to tell whether a stealth section gives you real choices
When a stealth encounter feels like a grass-hopping exercise, assess the space by asking:
Best Value
- Can I understand detection? Look for cues about enemy facing, sightlines, sound, and investigation. If a rule seems inconsistent, consider whether the game has signaled a different sensory cue rather than assuming all concealment works alike.
- Are there alternatives? Check for another route, elevation, a distraction, a tool, a disguise, or a different objective outcome. A choice only matters if the space makes it usable.
- Does concealment interact with other systems? Notice whether movement, surfaces, camouflage, lighting, or patrol behavior change the risk. A simple hide-or-be-seen rule can be legible, but it offers fewer decisions if nothing else affects it.
- Can I make a plan after being noticed? Treat this as an evaluation question, not a claim about the games above: does an alert create a situation with new options, or does progress depend on reloading? Reactive consequences can preserve agency, while a forced reset can make experimentation feel costly.
- Is the layout readable? Routes should be distinct enough to compare. More entrances do not help if the level gives no way to understand where they lead or what risks they involve.
What developers should change instead of simply removing grass
Removing foliage would discard a useful form of concealment without fixing the underlying design problem. The better goal is to make it one credible option in a system players can learn:
- Give enemies understandable senses and reactions, so detection feels connected to what the player did.
- Build alternate paths and vertical routes into spaces, rather than making one hiding corridor the only safe progression.
- Let tools, distractions, movement, and objective choices change the situation in distinct ways.
- Use grass, shadow, crowds, and cover for different purposes instead of treating every hiding place as an interchangeable safe zone.
- Allow a mistake to create a new problem where possible, rather than making a reload the only practical response.
Dishonored level designer Steve Lee summarized the value behind those options: “Empowering the player to play in their own way is really fundamental to the idea of games presenting interesting choices and there being depth to the gameplay.” That is a more useful standard than asking whether a game contains tall grass. Grass belongs in stealth; it should not have to do all the work.
