US investors may be able to buy Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. shares directly through a broker that supports the Korean Exchange (KRX), but the route is not the same as buying a US-listed stock. Samsung lists its original common shares as 005930 and preferred shares as 005935 on the KRX. Its London-listed global depositary receipts (GDRs), SMSN and SMSEL, are not a workaround for US residents: Samsung says individuals are prohibited from trading them under Rule 144A. A US-registered fund can offer indirect exposure instead, but it does not give you direct ownership of Samsung shares.
First, identify which Samsung security you mean
This guide is about Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., not every company or security that uses the Samsung name. Samsung Electronics lists two original share classes on the KRX: common shares under 005930 and preferred shares under 005935. It also lists common and preferred GDRs on the London Stock Exchange as SMSN and SMSEL, respectively. Samsung’s listing information identifies these symbols and venues.

Common and preferred shares are different classes, so do not assume their rights, liquidity, or terms are interchangeable. Review the issuer’s current information and your broker’s instrument details before choosing a class.

Can a US resident buy Samsung shares directly?
Potentially, through a broker that offers access to Korean-listed equities and permits the specific US account to trade them. Interactive Brokers announced KRX equity access on May 7, 2026, and named Samsung Electronics among the companies available on the market. That announcement establishes a route to investigate, not a guarantee that every US customer can trade either Samsung share class or use every order type. Check the broker’s KRX announcement alongside its current account disclosures.

Before transferring money, confirm that the broker accepts your account for KRX trading and supports the exact instrument. Ask about market permissions, order types, settlement, trading hours, currency conversion, commissions, custody or other fees, dividend handling, and tax reporting. These details can differ by account and change over time.
Why the London GDRs are not a simple alternative
A GDR is a depositary receipt representing shares of a foreign company; it is not the same instrument as buying the original shares on their home exchange. Samsung’s investor guide states: “Individuals are prohibited from trading GDRs in accordance with Rule 144A of the US Securities Exchange Act.” Samsung’s page also includes securities-law caveats for US persons, so treat this as Samsung’s stated guidance and verify the rules that apply to your specific circumstances with your broker or a qualified professional. Do not treat a GDR symbol appearing in a broker’s search results as proof that a US resident is eligible to trade it. The symbols SMSN and SMSEL identify Samsung’s London-listed GDRs; they do not remove the restriction Samsung describes.

A US-registered mutual fund or ETF may provide international or country-market exposure, potentially including Korean companies. This is pooled, indirect exposure: the fund owns a portfolio according to its objectives, and you own fund shares—not Samsung Electronics shares directly. Check a fund’s current holdings and Samsung weight, investment objective, expenses, and risks. Holdings and weights can change, and a fund focused on a country or region may not track Samsung’s share price closely.
Compare the practical routes
| Route | What you hold | What is established | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| KRX common, 005930 | Samsung Electronics common shares | Samsung lists the original common shares on the KRX. | US-account eligibility, KRX permissions, instrument and order support, currency conversion, trading and custody costs. |
| KRX preferred, 005935 | Samsung Electronics preferred shares | Samsung lists the original preferred shares on the KRX. | Share-class rights and terms, broker access, liquidity, and costs. |
| LSE GDR, SMSN or SMSEL | A depositary receipt for Samsung shares | Samsung lists both GDR classes in London and says individuals are prohibited from trading them under Rule 144A. | Do not infer US-person eligibility from a broker listing; check applicable restrictions. |
| US-registered mutual fund or ETF | Shares in a pooled investment | Investor.gov describes funds as one way to obtain international or country-market exposure. | Current holdings and Samsung weight, expenses, objective, and whether indirect exposure fits your goal. |
International investing can also mean currency movements, higher costs, different information availability, varying liquidity, different market operations and trading hours, and limits on legal remedies. Investor.gov notes that exchange-rate changes can increase or reduce an international investment’s return. These are general risks, not proof that a particular broker or instrument is unavailable.

A sensible way to investigate direct access
- Confirm the issuer. Make sure you are looking for Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., rather than another Samsung-affiliated company.
- Decide whether direct ownership matters. If you require Samsung Electronics shares, investigate the KRX common or preferred listing. If indirect exposure is acceptable, compare fund objectives and holdings instead.
- Check the direct-share route. Search for KRX 005930 or 005935 at a broker that explicitly supports Korean equities. Samsung’s listing page confirms the symbols; Interactive Brokers’ May 2026 announcement is one current indication of KRX access. Confirm live availability for your own account.
- Resolve eligibility before funding. Ask the broker whether your account may trade the chosen security, which orders it accepts, and how settlement and currency conversion work. Confirm all commissions, minimums, custody charges, dividend processing, and tax documents.
- Do not substitute the London GDR automatically. Samsung’s guide says individuals are prohibited from trading its GDRs under Rule 144A. Ask the broker or a qualified professional about the rules for your situation rather than relying on symbol availability.
- Check the intermediary. Investor.gov advises investors to check registration and warns that working directly with a foreign broker not registered in the US may not provide the same protections as using a US-registered broker. Use its international-investing guidance and official registration resources.
Understand the risks before placing an order
- Currency: KRX shares are traded in Korean won. A move in the dollar-won exchange rate can raise or reduce your dollar-denominated result, independently of the share price.
- Costs and operations: Foreign-market commissions, currency conversion, settlement procedures, trading hours, and liquidity may differ from what you encounter with US-listed shares.
- Information: Company information may not be available in English or may not match US-company disclosure practices.
- Market and legal conditions: Political, economic, and social developments can affect foreign investments, and US legal remedies may be limited.
These considerations apply broadly to international investing. They do not establish a particular investment’s likely performance. Review the disclosures for the security and intermediary you actually plan to use.
