Why Do Some Games Use More CPU Cores Than Others?

Games use different numbers of CPU cores because engines divide work differently. Learn how parallel jobs, central threads and CPU scheduling shape performance.

Games use different numbers of CPU cores because their engines divide work differently. Independent tasks can run at the same time on separate cores, but gameplay dependencies, synchronization and scheduling can leave some cores waiting. More visible core activity does not automatically mean a game runs faster.

What does it mean for a game to use multiple CPU cores?

A game can run several threads—separate streams of work—for jobs such as gameplay, rendering, audio, loading and background tasks. These are documented examples, not a fixed list shared by every game. A thread is a unit of work the operating system can schedule; it is not permanently tied to one physical core.

Engines can also use pools of worker threads to handle jobs without creating a dedicated thread for every task. Unity describes its Job System as running jobs in parallel on worker threads and synchronizing their results with the main thread when the work is complete. Its scheduler aims to use available CPU capacity rather than requiring developers to assign one thread to each job. Unity Job System overview

Why can one game spread work across more cores?

Its workload contains independent tasks

Work scales across cores most readily when many operations can proceed independently. For example, a game may need to update many similar objects or process separate pieces of data. Unity’s ParallelFor job system divides work into batches; workers can process batches concurrently, and a worker that finishes early can take batches from workers that still have work. AMD RYZEN 7 9800X3D 8-Core, 16-Thread Desktop Processor
  • The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
  • 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
  • 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
  • Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure

By contrast, a chain of operations in which each step depends on the previous result has less opportunity for parallel work. Adding available cores cannot make dependent steps run simultaneously.

Its engine assigns work to different threads

Unreal Engine documentation describes a game thread handling UObject and Actor logic, C++ and Blueprint work, and UI logic; separate rendering and RHI threads; task pools; and audio and loading threads. This illustrates how engine architecture can expose work to multiple cores. It does not mean every game uses this exact arrangement, or that each thread is continuously busy. Threads still need to coordinate

Parallel tasks often need to pass results back to central game logic or wait for shared data. That coordination can limit how much work happens at once. Epic documents Unreal’s renderer as running on its own thread, potentially a frame or two behind the game thread. Passing data between threads requires care because unsafe access to shared state can cause race conditions. Epic Games: Threaded Rendering in Unreal Engine

If a frame depends on a central thread finishing its work, faster completion of other tasks may not shorten that frame. Synchronization and dependencies can leave cores idle even when the CPU has unused capacity.

Why does core use vary by CPU?

The game’s threads are scheduled across available cores by the operating system and CPU platform. Where those threads run—and how long their jobs take—can affect frame timing. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit discusses a benchmark engine with simulation and rendering main threads plus job threads. It notes that allowing threads to move across all cores can help in some cases, but does not improve performance consistently across CPU manufacturers; a long-running job can make a worker thread critical to the frame. Microsoft GDK: Game Performance in Hybrid CPU Environments

As a result, two processors with different core designs or scheduling behavior may run the same game differently. The number of cores a game can use effectively depends on its workload, engine, and platform; there is no universal core count or fixed performance gain that applies to all games.

Does higher CPU-core usage mean better performance?

No. A utilization graph shows how busy cores are, not whether the game is completing frames quickly or consistently. A game can show activity across several cores yet still wait on one critical thread. Conversely, a lower total CPU percentage does not prove that the processor is the problem—or that it is not.

To understand a slowdown, determine what is holding up the frame: a saturated game or render thread, worker jobs waiting on a dependency, or the GPU. For Unreal Engine, Epic’s profiling guidance distinguishes a game-thread CPU limit from a render-thread CPU limit; the latter can point to too many draw calls, while the former calls for examining the game code responsible. Those are Unreal-specific clues, not universal diagnoses for every engine. Epic Games: CPU Profiling

How to compare CPU performance in games

When comparing two CPUs or trying to understand why one game behaves differently from another, keep the conditions consistent and look beyond the overall utilization percentage:

  • Use the same game scene and graphics settings for each comparison.
  • Compare frame-time consistency, not just an average frame rate.
  • Where profiling tools expose them, examine game-thread, render-thread, and worker-job timings to find the work that delays the frame.
  • Check whether the frame is CPU-limited or GPU-limited before attributing a slowdown to core count.
  • Consider CPU architecture and scheduling behavior as well as the number of cores.

A utilization reading alone cannot tell you which thread is critical, whether other work is waiting, or whether the GPU is limiting performance. The useful comparison is how the actual game and hardware complete the same work, not which system lights up more cores.
