Why Do Not Disturb Still Shows Notifications in Windows 11—and How to Fix It

Windows 11 Do not disturb hides most banners, but notifications may still appear in Notification Center or come through as allowed exceptions. Use these checks to find the cause.

In Windows 11, Do not disturb usually hides notification banners; it does not delete notifications. Most notifications are sent to Notification Center instead, while alarms, reminders, and apps you have allowed as priorities may still interrupt you. First check whether you are seeing a new pop-up banner or simply finding notifications in Notification Center, then follow the relevant checks below.

First, distinguish a banner from Notification Center

A banner is a pop-up that appears on screen. Notifications collected in Notification Center are not the same as banners: Windows can route notifications there while Do not disturb is on. Open Notification Center from the taskbar or press Windows key + N to review them. If the notifications are only there, that is expected behavior, not proof that Do not disturb failed. Microsoft explains how Windows 11 notifications and Do not disturb work.

If you are seeing banners, note which sender produced them. Alarms, reminders, and apps on the priority list can be exceptions. The sender helps distinguish an allowed interruption from an app-specific banner setting.

Remove priority exceptions that should not interrupt you

Windows can allow calls, reminders, and selected apps to show notifications even while Do not disturb is active. Review the exceptions and remove only the ones you do not want.

  1. Open Settings > System > Notifications.
  2. Select Set priority notifications.
  3. Review the calls and reminders options and the allowed apps list.
  4. Turn off or remove any exception that should not be permitted to interrupt you.

These settings are intentional exceptions to Do not disturb, so changing them is the right fix when a banner comes from an allowed sender. Microsoft’s Windows 11 notification guidance describes priority notifications and automatic rules.

Check whether an automatic rule is changing Do not disturb

Windows can turn Do not disturb on automatically in response to a schedule or activity. These rules more often explain why the setting is on when you did not switch it on yourself, but reviewing them also helps identify whether the notification timing matches an automatic condition.

  1. Go to Settings > System > Notifications.
  2. Expand Turn on do not disturb automatically.
  3. Review scheduled hours and rules for display duplication, gaming, full-screen app use, and the first hour after a Windows feature update.
  4. Adjust or turn off the rule that does not match how you want notifications handled.

The available rules and labels can vary with Windows feature updates; use the wording shown in your installed version. Microsoft lists the automatic Do not disturb conditions.

Review Focus sessions and the Do not disturb switch

Starting a Focus session turns on Do not disturb by default. Notifications received during a session can still be reviewed in Notification Center. If Do not disturb was already on before the session began, it can remain on after the session ends.

  1. Open Settings > System > Focus.
  2. Check whether a session is running; end it if you do not want it active.
  3. Review the option to turn on Do not disturb for future Focus sessions.
  4. After ending a session, check Do not disturb again if it had been on beforehand.

Microsoft’s Focus guidance for Windows describes the relationship between Focus sessions and Do not disturb.

Check the affected app’s own notification settings

Windows provides separate controls for each app. An app may be allowed to show banners, appear in Notification Center, play sounds, or use a priority level. Change the setting that corresponds to the behavior you want to stop rather than disabling every notification control.

  1. Open Settings > System > Notifications.
  2. Select the app that is sending the unwanted notification.
  3. Review Show notification banners, Show notifications in notification center, sound, and priority options.
  4. Disable or adjust only the controls responsible for the unwanted banner, sound, or Notification Center entry.

Microsoft’s app notification instructions cover these per-app controls.

If only Outlook is affected, check Teams presence

For an Outlook-only problem, Microsoft identifies Teams presence as one possible factor in notification delivery, alongside Windows notification and Focus settings. Check whether Teams is set to Do not disturb, and review Outlook’s notification configuration. This is a targeted check for Outlook; it should not be assumed to explain unrelated apps’ notifications.

Microsoft’s Outlook for Windows notification troubleshooting covers these possible factors.

Use the symptom to choose the next check

What you observe Check first
Notifications appear only after you open Notification Center This is consistent with Do not disturb routing notifications there rather than showing banners.
A banner comes from an alarm, reminder, or selected app Review Set priority notifications.
Do not disturb switches on around a particular time or activity Review its schedule, display duplication, gaming, full-screen, and post-feature-update automatic rules.
The symptom occurs during or after a Focus session Check the session and the Do not disturb option under Settings > System > Focus.
One app shows unwanted banners or sounds Review that app’s controls under Settings > System > Notifications.
Only Outlook has the problem Check Teams presence and Outlook’s notification configuration.

The settings above identify common documented causes, but they do not establish the cause on every individual PC. If none matches, note the sender, where the notification appears, and when it happens; those details narrow down which Windows or app setting to revisit.
