Check the affected app’s alert locations first, then review Focus and delivery timing if the notifications still arrive quietly. Notifications in Notification Center have not necessarily been blocked or lost.
Why notifications show in Notification Center
Three separate controls can affect what you see and when: the alert location chosen for an app, whether a Focus mode allows interruptions, and whether delivery is immediate or scheduled. Do Not Disturb is one of the Focus modes; it can silence or delay notifications so they do not interrupt you. Separately, an app can be configured to show alerts in Notification Center without showing banners. Apple explains that these destinations are selected in the app’s notification settings: Change notification settings on iPhone.
Restore banners for the affected app
- Open Settings > Notifications > [app]. Confirm Allow Notifications is on.
- Under Alerts, select Banners if you want a pop-up while using your iPhone. Lock Screen, Notification Center, and banners are separate alert locations; choose the ones you want.
If Banners is already selected, check whether a Focus is silencing interruptions or notifications are being delivered later.
Check Do Not Disturb and other Focus modes
- Go to Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb.
- Review the people and apps allowed to notify you, as well as any people or apps set to be silenced. If the app or person is silenced, adjust the exception if you want its notifications to interrupt you.
- Check whether another Focus is active, and review that mode’s settings too. Focus modes other than Do Not Disturb can also prevent calls, alerts, and notifications.
- Under Set a Schedule, check for automatic activation times. On supported iOS and iPadOS releases, selecting a Lock Screen associated with Do Not Disturb can also activate the mode.
Apple’s Use Do Not Disturb on your iPhone or iPad describes its Focus settings and activation options. Menu details and feature eligibility can vary by software release and device. Apple’s article, published June 29, 2026, also describes Intelligent Breakthrough & Silencing for selected compatible devices and software versions; it is not required to diagnose the basic difference between banners and Notification Center.

Check Scheduled Summary and delivery timing
Scheduled Summary is separate from the app’s alert-location choices. An app included in a summary may have notifications delivered at the scheduled time rather than immediately.
- Open Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary.
- Check whether the affected app is included and when the summary is scheduled.
- Review the app’s Notification Delivery option, where available, to distinguish Immediate Delivery from Scheduled Summary.
If you want the app’s notifications delivered outside the summary, change its delivery option. Selecting Banners still controls where alerts can appear; it does not by itself change scheduled delivery.
Consider quiet, provisional notification permission
Apple’s developer documentation says provisional notifications are delivered quietly, without sound or a banner, and appear in Notification Center history: Asking permission to use notifications. This may explain quiet delivery even when you are looking for a banner. The available guidance does not establish one universal way to change provisional permission across all iOS versions, so check the current settings and software version on your device rather than following a version-independent conversion path.
Diagnose the three controls separately
| What to check | What it affects | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Alert location | Whether an app uses banners, the Lock Screen, or Notification Center | Settings > Notifications > [app] > Alerts |
| Interruption policy | Whether Focus allows or silences people, apps, and other notifications | Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb, or the active Focus |
| Delivery timing | Whether selected apps arrive immediately or in a scheduled batch | Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary and the app’s Notification Delivery options |
The precise cause on an individual phone depends on its app settings, active Focus, schedules, summary membership, and notification permission. Check each control on the device; a notification appearing in Notification Center alone does not identify which one is responsible.
