Some N64 games still feel playable because their designers treated movement, camera, and level readability as connected problems—not details to fix after building a world. Developer recollections about Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time show how teams adapted familiar game ideas to three-dimensional space. They explain why these landmark games can remain approachable, but they do not establish that every N64 game has aged equally well.
Why did 3D games need different design rules?
In a 2D game, players generally read movement across a flat screen. In 3D, they must also judge depth, steer through space, and interpret what the camera reveals. That made it harder to know how far away something was or whether a jump would land.

Nintendo’s retrospective interview about Ocarina of Time describes the team developing new approaches rather than simply carrying over 2D conventions. Shigeru Iwata, Nintendo’s president and the interviewer, put it this way: “Since the old 2D rules weren’t applicable, everything was made from scratch.” That shift helps explain why the strongest examples of N64 playability came from design work specific to 3D.
Why does Super Mario 64 still feel good to play?
Movement came before the larger world
In a 1996 interview excerpt republished by Nintendo Everything, Shigeru Miyamoto recalled that the team first worked on analogue movement in a simple space. “We were trying to get the controls right with an analogue 3D stick, and once that felt smooth, we knew we were halfway there.” Only after the movement began to feel right did the team expand the environment.

- Nintendo 64 Console (Black): Retro gaming console in a sleek black finish.
- Two Controllers (Red & Blue): Includes two vibrant controllers for multiplayer gaming.
- 256KB Memory Card: Save your game progress easily with ample storage.
- HDMI Adapter: Modern connectivity for easy setup with today’s TVs
- Power Adapter: Essential power supply included for immediate play.
That order matters: a large 3D world is difficult to enjoy if steering through it feels awkward. By developing movement and space together, the team could build challenges around what the controls made possible.
Challenges were adjusted for 3D judgment
Miyamoto also recalled that playtesting exposed problems that were harder to see on paper. The team changed a river after players found it too difficult, and made jumps forgiving enough to account for the difficulty of judging exact distances in 3D. Those decisions helped make obstacles readable without requiring players to estimate every gap perfectly.
Super Mario 64 was released in Japan in June 1996 alongside the Nintendo 64 system, according to Nintendo’s retrospective. Its lasting appeal is not proof that every player finds its controls effortless; it is an example of designers tuning movement and challenge around the limits of a new perspective.

How did Ocarina of Time make 3D spaces easier to read?
In Ocarina of Time, camera position and environment design had to work together. Developers interviewed by Nintendo described shaping spaces around what Link would see from a particular position and repeatedly trying layouts until they looked right.

Koichi Ishii of Grezzo singled out the way the developers considered “how it would look to Link standing there,” rather than simply drawing maps. A space designed around the player’s viewpoint can make routes, landmarks, and the next destination easier to understand. The point is not that the game’s camera works like a modern one, but that the team treated the view as part of how players navigated the world.
Ocarina of Time first released in Japan for Nintendo 64 in November 1998, as noted in the same Nintendo interview.

Do N64 games all hold up equally well?
No single conclusion about the whole library follows from these two examples. Miyamoto later described Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time as laying much of the foundation for modern 3D games, a creator’s retrospective assessment reported by Nintendo Everything. That speaks to their influence, not to a measured ranking of how enjoyable every N64 title is today.
