1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYour headphones can sound different on two devices because each source may select a different Bluetooth audio profile, output, codec, or sound-processing setting. If audio turns thin or phone-call-like when you join a call or start voice chat, check whether the device is using the headset microphone and switching to a hands-free profile. Other symptoms—constant muffling, dropouts, or one missing channel—call for different checks.
Why the same headphones can sound different
Bluetooth headphones do not determine sound quality on their own. The phone, computer, operating system, and app all affect how audio is routed and processed. One device might send stereo music to the headphones, while another selects a hands-free endpoint, applies an equalizer, or sends audio to a different output entirely.

On Windows Bluetooth Classic, Microsoft documents two relevant profiles: A2DP for stereo playback, and HFP for mono playback plus microphone capture. When an app uses a headset microphone, Windows may use the hands-free path; Microsoft also notes that resampling can occur when apps use different audio endpoints. This is a strong possibility when sound changes as a meeting, call, game chat, or voice app starts, but it is not the explanation for every poor-sound problem. Microsoft’s Bluetooth Classic Audio documentation describes the profile distinction.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Codec names such as AAC, aptX, or LDAC do not guarantee better sound by themselves: both the source and headphones must support the codec, and the connection must actually use it.

Start by identifying when and how the sound is bad
- It becomes thin or muffled only when a microphone is active: check the selected input and output, especially on Windows.
- It sounds poor all the time on one device: verify the output, connection, app settings, and whether another headset behaves the same way on that source.
- It crackles, skips, or cuts out: investigate the app and connection conditions, not just sound-quality settings.
- Only one side plays: check left/right balance, mono audio, pairing, and updates.
- It is simply too quiet: check the selected output and the volume controls in both the app and operating system before assuming the headphones are faulty.
If sound worsens when you use the microphone
Check the app’s microphone and the system’s playback output
On a Windows PC, check the input device selected inside the call, meeting, or game app, then check the playback output selected in Windows. If the headset microphone is active and the sound becomes phone-like, try a separate microphone while keeping the headphones selected for stereo playback. This is a diagnostic test: it may help isolate hands-free-profile behavior, but it can also remove the headset’s microphone functionality for that session.
Some systems show separate stereo and hands-free entries; others present different endpoint names or manage them automatically. Do not assume that every device has a setting to switch profiles manually. Sony’s guidance for devices that do expose profile choices is to switch music playback from HFP or HSP to A2DP. The available controls depend on the connected device. Sony’s Bluetooth sound-quality guidance explains this recommendation.

Check LE Audio support before looking for a Windows setting
Windows 11 can provide improved playback quality during microphone use with compatible Bluetooth LE Audio hardware. This requires both a Bluetooth LE Audio-capable Windows PC and compatible headphones; it is not a universal switch for Bluetooth devices. On a supported setup, check Settings > System > Sound and the connected LE Audio device’s settings. Availability and exact controls vary by PC and headphones. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 LE Audio quality settings guidance.
If sound is poor all the time on one device
- Confirm the playback destination. Select the headphones as the output in the operating system and in the app, rather than the device speaker or an unintended hands-free endpoint.
- Reconnect the headphones. Disconnect and reconnect. If that does not help, forget or remove the pairing and pair again using the device maker’s instructions.
- Compare the same audio on both sources. Use the same content and, if possible, the same app. Then try another Bluetooth headset on the suspect device. If multiple headsets sound poor on one source, that points toward the source or its settings; if the headphones sound poor across sources, investigate the headphones. Samsung recommends these cross-checks in its Galaxy Bluetooth headphone troubleshooting guide.
- Review sound processing. Check app-specific equalizer or audio-quality settings, operating-system sound enhancements, and accessibility settings such as mono audio or left/right balance. On Windows, follow Microsoft’s Bluetooth-connected-but-no-sound troubleshooting. If the issue began after an update, check for relevant system, device-driver, and headphone-firmware updates.
- Compare streaming with local audio. If only streaming skips or distorts, try locally stored audio. If moving closer to the source changes the problem, connection conditions may be involved. Apple’s guidance covers source and connection checks for wireless headphones that cut out or sound distorted.
- Inspect the headphones if the issue follows them. Check the earpieces for debris or visible damage and consult the manufacturer’s support guidance. Samsung also notes that downloaded apps can contribute to some sound problems.
If only one channel works
On Windows, check left/right balance and mono audio, confirm the intended output is selected, and review the output format and pairing. Consider whether the problem began after a software or firmware update. Microsoft lists these checks for Bluetooth audio playing in one channel. If stereo works on another source, that comparison helps narrow the fault to the affected device or its settings.

What the comparisons can tell you
| What changes | Useful first check | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Sound degrades as a call or voice app starts | Check whether the app uses the headset microphone; test a separate microphone with the headphones as output. | On Windows Bluetooth Classic, a switch from A2DP stereo playback to HFP hands-free audio is a plausible cause. |
| Only one source device sounds bad | Play the same content on both sources, then test another headset on the affected source. | The comparisons help distinguish a source-specific setting or connection issue from a headphone fault. |
| Sound skips or distorts intermittently | Compare local and streaming audio; check whether app activity or connection conditions change the symptom. | The issue may involve the app or connection, rather than a persistent fidelity setting. |
| Only one side plays | Check balance, mono audio, output selection, pairing, and recent updates. | The problem may be a channel or system setting rather than general Bluetooth sound quality. |
| Microphone use and stereo playback are both important on Windows 11 | Confirm LE Audio support on both the PC and headphones. | LE Audio quality settings may help on compatible setups; they do not apply to all Bluetooth hardware. |
When to suspect a headphone fault
If the same headphones sound bad across multiple sources after you have checked output selection and relevant sound settings, inspect them for debris or damage and consult the manufacturer. If they sound good on one source but not another, first investigate the affected source, its app, and its connection. Replacing the headphones or buying a Bluetooth adapter is not a useful first step without those comparisons.
