Because a mirror and a photograph show different versions of a view: the mirror reverses your face, while a camera freezes it from one viewpoint. A close camera can also change apparent facial proportions through perspective. Neither view is a definitive verdict on what you look like.
Why the mirror and a photo can look so different
Three things are often at work: orientation, camera position, and the way you encounter each image. They can combine, so a photo that feels unfamiliar is not necessarily a more accurate—or less accurate—record of your appearance.

A mirror reverses the view you know
Your reflection is laterally reversed relative to an ordinary, unflipped photograph. Because you see your reflection repeatedly, that orientation is familiar. Facial asymmetry means the reversed and unflipped versions are not identical, so a photo can look subtly unlike the face you expect to see.
A 2023 study asked 198 dental students to compare original and mirror-reversed versions of their own standard frontal photos and selfies. Most preferred their original standard frontal photograph, while most preferred the mirror version of their own selfie. For selfies at rest, 56.6% preferred the mirror image. This is consistent with familiarity playing a role in preference, but it does not show that everyone favors a reflection or that either orientation is objectively better. A close camera changes perspective
When a camera is close to your face, nearer features occupy a larger angle of view than features farther away. That changes their relative proportions in the image. This is a perspective effect tied to viewpoint and distance, not simply proof that a phone camera is “bad.”
In a 2024 study, Adeeb Derakhshan and colleagues photographed 12 subjects with a smartphone and a full-frame DSLR. Using measurements at 60 inches as the comparison standard, the authors reported increased vertical stretching of midface features at short distances. At 8 inches, the full-frame camera showed a 12%–19% increase at 24 mm, 35 mm, and 50 mm focal lengths; a smartphone showed an 18% increase at 8 inches and a 12% increase at 12 inches. These are results from that study’s setup, not expected values for every person, camera, or selfie. The authors concluded that “Distortion of midfacial features using both smartphones and full-frame cameras occurs with short, ‘selfie’ distances between the camera and subject.” See the study abstract and methods.

Does focal length make a face look different?
Focal length affects field of view and framing, but it is incomplete to blame a particular focal length alone for a face looking different. In practice, changing focal length often changes how far the camera must be from the subject to fit the same framing. That change in distance alters perspective. Lens aberrations are a separate issue from perspective.

Research on photographic practice also finds that focal length and viewing distance affect how a picture’s perspective is perceived. A picture may be viewed from a distance that does not match the geometry in which it was made, influencing the impression it gives. Distance-related facial perspective can matter to perception: a separate controlled study found that geometric warping alone accounted for effects of interpersonal distance on social judgments of faces. That does not mean a particular portrait distance guarantees attractiveness or represents a person’s face more truthfully in every context. Read the study on facial perspective and social judgments.
Why a single photo may feel less like you
A mirror gives you a familiar, changing view as you move. A photograph captures one instant and presents it as a static image. Its orientation, distance, framing, angle, expression, and lighting may differ from what you are used to seeing in a mirror. Those conditions can influence the result, but the cited studies do not measure how much lighting, angle, phone processing, or saved-image mirroring contributes across devices.

Phone front-camera mirroring and image-saving defaults can vary. The evidence cited here does not establish the current behavior of every phone, camera app, or processing feature, so check the image itself rather than assuming it is mirrored or unmirrored.
How to take a less close-looking photo
- Move the camera farther away. Try a more distant camera position instead of holding the phone very close to your face.
- Reframe from that distance. Adjust the crop or framing so your face remains the size you want without moving the camera back in close.
- Compare several images. Look across more than one photo rather than treating a single frozen expression or angle as definitive.
- Use hands-free placement if helpful. A phone tripod and remote shutter can make it easier to position the camera farther away. This is a practical convenience inferred from the distance finding, not an accessory tested in the study.
These steps change the capture conditions; they cannot produce one objectively correct version of your face. The aim is simply to see how distance and framing affect the image.
