Why Airwrap curls drop
The most useful fixes are in the prep and setting steps: hair that is too wet may not dry fully while wrapped, and releasing or handling a warm curl can disturb its shape before it cools. Dyson also cautions that too much styling product can weigh hair down. The guidance below reflects Dyson’s technique recommendations; it does not guarantee a particular curl-retention time.

How to make Airwrap curls last longer

Start with partly dried hair
Pre-dry towel- or air-dried hair until it is about 80% dry and damp to the touch. Dyson uses both descriptions in its guidance. The practical point is to avoid curling soaking-wet hair or hair that has already dried completely.

Choose a barrel for the curl you want
Dyson describes its 30 mm barrel as producing more defined, classic curls and its 40 mm barrel as creating softer, more voluminous waves. Its owners’ guidance recommends the smallest-diameter barrel for longer-lasting curls. The stated difference is about shape—not a tested comparison of how long each barrel’s curls hold. Check that the attachment is compatible with your Airwrap generation and market.

Work in small, defined sections
Separate the hair into manageable sections before curling. Smaller sections make it easier to dry each one through and set it consistently. Avoid wrapping an overly large section around the barrel.

Dry each wrapped section completely
Hold the wrapped section for about 15 seconds or until it is fully dry. Dyson’s exact timing can vary with hair type and model, so use dryness as well as the approximate time to judge when to move on. A section that is still damp has not completed this step.

Use the cold shot before releasing
After drying, direct cool air at the wrapped curl for 5–10 seconds, following Dyson’s general styling guidance. Then turn off the machine and release the curl gently.

Let curls cool before separating
Dyson’s newer curl tips recommend letting finished curls cool completely for 15 minutes. For extra support while they cool, pin each warm curl in place with a sectioning clip rather than letting it hang immediately. Once cool, remove the clips and separate gently.

Finish lightly and handle curls less
Dyson suggests a lightweight hairspray or its Chitosan finishing products, while warning that excess product can weigh hair down and make curls drop. Treat product as optional: use a light hand, and avoid repeatedly touching or repositioning styled hair, which can stretch curls and reduce definition.
What changes by Airwrap model
Airwrap attachments and recommendations vary by model. Check the instructions for your specific machine before choosing a barrel or applying settings from advice written for another model. Dyson’s general guidance gives the timings above, but it does not establish a universal heat or airflow setting for every Airwrap and hair type.

How much hold should you expect?
Dyson’s published advice gives technique timings, not a measured curl-retention duration, percentage improvement, or guarantee. Results can depend on the person’s hair and conditions; the cited guidance does not quantify those effects. Treat the steps as ways to improve the chance of a well-set curl, not a promise that curls will last all day.
