In Google Messages, one check means an RCS message was sent; two checks mean it was delivered, and filled double checks mean it was read. If the message remains at one check, Google Messages has not received a delivery indication. That can happen when you or the recipient loses mobile or internet service, but the status alone cannot identify the cause or establish whether the recipient has seen the message. These check icons apply to RCS, not SMS or MMS.
First, check whether the message is RCS or SMS/MMS
The checkmark key is for RCS messages. RCS uses Wi-Fi or mobile data, and its availability depends on factors such as carrier, region, device, and settings. SMS and MMS do not show the same RCS sent, delivered, and read icons. Check the conversation or compose bar for the message type before treating a missing checkmark as a delivery problem. Google explains RCS message icons and availability.

Google describes the distinction this way: “A single check: Your message has been sent.” Two checks indicate delivery; filled double checks indicate the message was read. A sent status is not the same as a delivered status: it means the message was sent, not that Google Messages has received confirmation of delivery.

RCS messages travel over Wi-Fi or mobile data. If either you or your contact loses mobile or internet service, delivery may be delayed. As Google puts it, “Your messages can’t always be delivered immediately, like when you or your contact loses mobile or Internet service.” RCS support and availability can also vary by carrier, region, device, and settings. Google’s message-delivery guidance describes delayed delivery and the SMS/MMS alternative.

The icon is only a status indication; it is not a diagnosis. It does not prove that the recipient blocked you, that their phone is offline, or that Google or a carrier is experiencing an outage. The available status does not expose recipient-side delivery logs, so the precise reason for a particular message may not be knowable from your phone.
Choose whether to wait or send that message as SMS/MMS
If the message is time-sensitive, Google Messages provides a per-message option to switch an undelivered RCS message to SMS/MMS. SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted, unlike an encrypted RCS conversation where encryption is available. SMS/MMS also does not use the same RCS delivery and read icons.

- Open the conversation containing the undelivered RCS message.
- Tap the message timestamp.
- Select Switch to text (SMS/MMS).
This is a manual fallback for that message; do not assume the app will automatically resend it as SMS/MMS. Keep mobile data enabled for timely RCS sending and receiving. Google’s instructions for controlling message delivery cover the switch and its encryption tradeoff.

- Confirm you have mobile signal, airplane mode is off, and the SIM is seated properly.
- Check that your mobile plan or account has service or credit for messaging.
- Confirm your carrier supports the relevant messaging service in your region.
- Update Google Messages and make sure it is your default SMS app.

If it happens only with one contact
Check that the contact’s phone number and country code are correct, and that the contact is not blocked. A problem limited to one conversation does not, by itself, establish that the other person blocked you or explain what happened on their device.

Check RCS connection and phone-number verification
An RCS connection marked “Connecting” may still be going through verification. Google says that if “Trouble connecting. Awaiting retry…” lasts more than 30 minutes, Messages is having trouble verifying your phone number. That is a troubleshooting threshold, not a promise about how long messages normally take to deliver.

Reset RCS only if simpler checks do not help
For problems receiving messages or syncing RCS, Google suggests turning RCS chats off and then back on. This is different from switching one message to SMS/MMS: turning RCS off affects RCS features, and if it remains off for more than 30 days after deactivation, you will be removed from RCS group chats.
Use Google’s RCS troubleshooting page for the reset steps and details about the group-chat consequence. If the issue persists after basic checks, contact your carrier about support or account-specific service; the status icon itself cannot confirm a carrier outage or pinpoint a recipient-side problem.
