To find a photo file on a Windows computer, search in File Explorer; to browse pictures as a collection, use Microsoft Photos. Start with a likely folder such as Pictures, Downloads, or Desktop, then search This PC if you need a broader scan. If Photos does not show an image, its folder may not be included in the app.
Choose the right way to look
| What you need | Use | What it can search |

| Find Apple-device photos stored in iCloud | iCloud for Windows and File Explorer | Your iCloud Photos library, with items downloaded when opened |

Search for the photo file in Windows
- Open File Explorer. Select a likely location such as Pictures, Downloads, or Desktop in the navigation pane.
- Search by name if you know it. Enter the filename or a distinctive word in the search box. If you do not know the name, try a file extension such as
.jpgor.png. - Broaden the search if needed. Select This PC and search again. This searches more of the computer and can take longer than searching a particular folder.
- Try taskbar Search. Search from the Windows taskbar to find files on the PC and in OneDrive.
Search results help locate files on disk. If a result is missing, try another likely folder or a broader search scope before assuming the photo is gone.

Open Photos by searching for it from the taskbar. The app is useful when you want to scan a gallery or search using photo details rather than navigate folders one by one.

Search by name or details
Use the Photos search field for a filename, capture date, file type such as PNG or JPEG, or location. Microsoft describes these search options in its Photos search guide.
Add folders that are missing from the gallery
Photos displays the Pictures folder by default. To show images stored elsewhere, open Gallery and choose Add folder, then select the folder containing them. A photo can be on the computer yet absent from the Photos gallery simply because that folder has not been added. See Microsoft’s guide to managing photos and videos.

Know the limits of visual search
Searching with a natural-language description of what is pictured is not a general feature for every Windows PC. Microsoft documents semantic search over indexed local photos for Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs; availability depends on the device and indexing. For other systems, use filename, date, type, or location search instead. Details are in Microsoft’s Photos search documentation.
Check OneDrive and iCloud libraries
OneDrive
Connect OneDrive within Photos to browse OneDrive media, or use the OneDrive photos experience. A local folder that appears in OneDrive Photos is not necessarily uploaded: its appearance in the gallery alone does not mean it has been backed up to OneDrive. Microsoft explains the Windows photo experience at Browse and manage your photos on Windows.

iCloud Photos
If you use Apple devices, open iCloud Photos in File Explorer. If it is not in the navigation pane, Apple says to look under Pictures. Opening a thumbnail downloads and displays the item. Follow Apple’s instructions for viewing iCloud Photos on a Windows computer.

If you still cannot find the picture
- Search a likely folder first, then search This PC for a wider and slower scan.
- Try both a known filename or distinctive term and a file extension such as
.jpgor.png. - If the file appears in File Explorer but not Photos, add its containing folder to the Photos gallery.
- If you expect it to be online, check the relevant OneDrive or iCloud library; local gallery visibility does not establish that a file was uploaded.
