Why Do Full-Page Screenshots Look Different in Chrome and Firefox?

Chrome and Firefox can capture full pages differently. Match capture mode, viewport, scale, and page state before treating a screenshot mismatch as a browser defect.

Full-page screenshots can differ because Chrome and Firefox use separate capture workflows and browser engines, and because the page may be captured at a different viewport, scale, or moment in its loading and animation cycle. A mismatch by itself does not show that either browser is wrong. To compare fairly, match capture mode, viewport, device-pixel ratio, and page state first, then investigate fixed or sticky elements and other layout differences.

What “full-page” means in each browser

Make sure both images cover the same area. Chrome DevTools distinguishes a screenshot of the visible viewport from Capture a full size screenshot, which includes content beyond the current viewport. Chrome DevTools documents both capture modes.

Firefox DevTools can capture an entire page; its :screenshot command includes a --fullpage option. Firefox also offers Save full page in its browser screenshot workflow. The Firefox command documentation describes its screenshot options. Firefox Support explains the browser screenshot workflow. Because these are different tools, do not assume that similarly named or selected controls capture the page in precisely the same way.

Why the images can diverge

Viewport dimensions and responsive layout

Pages adapt to available width and height. If the capture viewports differ, responsive breakpoints can change column count, navigation, font sizes, or element placement. Two browser windows that look similarly sized on screen do not necessarily have identical CSS viewport dimensions.

Scale and device-pixel ratio

A screenshot’s CSS viewport and its output pixel dimensions are related but not identical. Firefox’s screenshot command exposes --dpr; its documentation says values above 1 produce zoomed-in images and values below 1 produce zoomed-out images. Compare the chosen DPR and the exported image dimensions before interpreting a size mismatch as a layout difference.

Browser rendering

Chrome and Firefox have different browser engines, so layout and rasterization can vary. Mozilla’s rendering overview describes Firefox’s scene and frame model, including sticky frames in its discussion of positioning behavior. That architectural context does not establish a universal cause for a particular Chrome-versus-Firefox discrepancy. The available documentation does not provide a controlled head-to-head test that identifies one browser as generally more accurate for full-page captures.

Different page state at capture time

A capture taken before fonts, images, or asynchronous content finish loading may differ from one taken later. Animations, video, rotating banners, and changing content can also put the page in different visual states. For a meaningful comparison, wait for the same content and freeze or disable motion when appropriate.

Fixed and sticky elements

Fixed-position elements are positioned against the layout viewport, which remains in place while the page scrolls. Chrome’s viewport documentation describes this relationship. A full-document capture is not necessarily equivalent to stitching together a sequence of ordinary viewport screenshots, so fixed headers, cookie notices, chat controls, and sticky sidebars deserve a close look. Sticky positioning also depends on scroll behavior and layout; Mozilla’s rendering overview provides relevant context. Neither fact alone proves a browser bug.

Nested scrolling

Some pages scroll inside a panel rather than through the document. If content is missing or appears cut off, check which element owns the scroll and whether the capture covers that element as well as the outer page.

How to make a reproducible comparison

  1. Use the same URL and page state. Wait for the same content to load in both browsers. For visual regression work, disable or freeze animations and other changing content.
  2. Match the capture area. Use Chrome’s full-size capture and Firefox’s full-page capture rather than comparing one full document with one visible viewport.
  3. Match viewport and scale. Set the same viewport width and height, browser zoom, and device-pixel ratio where the tools permit. Record the values you use.
  4. Inspect scrolling and overlays. Look for nested scroll regions, fixed elements, and sticky elements that may behave differently in a full-page capture than in a viewport image.
  5. Record the environment. Note browser versions, operating system, capture method, viewport, scale, and output image dimensions so another person can reproduce the result.
  6. Compare in stages. First check whether content and layout differ; then assess antialiasing and pixel-level rasterization. A pixel difference proves only that the images differ, not that the page is functionally defective.

What to check when a mismatch persists

  • The whole image is scaled differently: compare viewport dimensions, browser zoom, DPR, and exported pixel dimensions.
  • The lower part of the page is absent: confirm that both tools captured the full page, and check for an inner scrolling container.
  • A header, banner, or sidebar is misplaced or repeated: inspect whether it is fixed or sticky and compare full-page capture behavior with a regular viewport capture.
  • Text or images shift between attempts: wait for fonts and images, and stabilize animations and asynchronous content before capturing again.
  • Only edges and fine details differ: separate layout or content changes from rasterization and antialiasing. A visual diff is a useful clue, not a diagnosis on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Chrome–Firefox screenshot mismatch prove there is a browser bug?

No. First establish that capture mode, viewport, scale, and page state match; then isolate whether the difference is in layout, content, or pixel rendering.

Which browser has the more accurate full-page screenshot?

There is no universal answer established by the documented capture controls. Accuracy depends on the page and on what you need to compare.
