The same emoji can look different on an iPhone and an Android phone because Unicode standardizes the character or sequence being sent, not one required picture. The receiving device or app draws it using its own emoji artwork and rendering software, so details such as expression, shape, color, or orientation can vary.
Unicode makes emoji text interoperable—not visually identical
Unicode defines emoji characters and sequences so that text can be exchanged between systems. A simple emoji may use one code point; a combined emoji can be a sequence of several. The standard also describes emoji presentation and modifiers, but it does not require Apple, Google, or other vendors to use the same artwork. The Unicode Consortium says it does not design or control the emoji images vendors use (Unicode emoji FAQ; Unicode Technical Standard #51).

This shared character system addresses an old compatibility problem. Japanese mobile carriers introduced emoji on phones in 1999, but their partly overlapping sets and incompatible encodings made reliable exchange difficult. Unicode added characters intended specifically as emoji in 2009 and a further set in 2010, according to its current technical standard. A common encoding helps devices identify what text was sent; it does not make their illustrations match.
How the receiving phone turns an emoji into an image
An ordinary text message carries the character or sequence, not a copy of the sender’s emoji picture. The recipient’s device or app renders it—often with an emoji font, or by another graphics-based method. Google describes emoji as working like font characters and notes that some emoji on iPhones look different from those on Pixel phones (Google’s emoji explainer).

Because platform makers supply their own designs, the same encoded emoji may have different facial expressions, outlines, colors, or other visual details on different systems. Google identifies Noto Emoji as its implementation, but not every Android app necessarily uses it: apps can have their own emoji implementation. The exact appearance can therefore depend on both the operating system and the app.
Why an emoji sometimes appears as a box
A visual difference usually means the character is supported but drawn differently. A box, blank space, or other fallback usually means the receiving device or app does not support the particular character or sequence. This can happen when software has not yet added a newer emoji, or when an app’s implementation lacks support. Vendors add glyphs and input support through their software-release cycles, so compatibility can vary by version (Unicode emoji FAQ).

For apps running on Android 12 and later, Google Play’s Android Emoji Policy requires support for the latest Unicode Emoji. Apps with custom emoji implementations have a four-month implementation window after a new Unicode Emoji release. That policy applies to Android 12 and later; it should not be taken as a rule for other operating systems (Google Play Android Emoji Policy).
Text-style and emoji-style presentation
Some characters can be presented either as text or as emoji. The variation selector U+FE0F requests emoji presentation, typically colored; U+FE0E requests text presentation, typically monochrome. These selectors express a presentation preference, but the final behavior can still vary with the platform and app. Unicode documents these presentation rules in UTS #51.

What determines the emoji you see?
- Character support: The operating-system and app versions need to recognize the character or full sequence.
- Renderer: An app may use the system emoji font or its own implementation.
- Presentation request: Where applicable, a variation selector can request text or emoji style.
- Design: Each vendor’s artwork determines the shape, expression, color, and orientation.
Google’s July 17, 2026 post about its Noto 3D emoji describes a Google-specific design update, not a change to Unicode’s role or a requirement that vendors share artwork (Google on Noto 3D emoji). A reliable side-by-side comparison needs the specific emoji, operating-system and app versions, and date; there is no single appearance shared by every iPhone or every Android device.
