Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA DVD or Blu-ray can stop, skip, freeze, or show “no disc” because of a dirty or damaged disc, a format or region mismatch, or a problem with the player or computer. Start by checking whether the fault follows one disc or affects several: try another compatible disc in the same device, then test the problem disc in another compatible player if possible.
First, find out whether the disc or the player is at fault
Try a few known-compatible discs in the affected player. If those work but one title does not, focus on that disc and its format. If several discs fail in the same device, check compatibility, setup, software or firmware, and the device itself.

When possible, put the problem disc in a second compatible player. If it fails there too, the disc or the way it was recorded is more likely to be responsible; if it plays, the original player may have a compatibility or condition problem. This comparison helps narrow the cause, but it is not definitive.

Why one DVD or Blu-ray may skip, freeze, or fail to load
Dirt, fingerprints, or physical damage
Dust, fingerprints, scratches, or cracks can interfere with a player reading the disc. HP says a dirty or scratched surface is the most common reason for a movie to skip when played on a computer (HP Support’s Windows DVD and Blu-ray troubleshooting guide). That statement is specific to computer playback, not a measurement of all standalone players.

- Laser lens cleaner for Blu-Ray players and Blu-Ray video game systems having issues with discs that load slowly, skip, or freeze during playback
- Patent-pending Zero-Clearance Technology and 10-Brush Cyclone Clean process removes dirt and dust build-up that causes audio and video dropout and distortion
- Cleaning the laser lens can extend the life of the Blu-Ray player while improving sound and image quality
- Includes Image & Sound Calibration Tools and instructions in English, French or Spanish
- Works with Blu-Ray Players, DVD Players, XBOX/XBOX 360/XBOX ONE, PS/2/3/4. Not compatible with CD only players
Check both sides in good light. A smudge or dust may be removable; a crack or significant damage may leave the disc unusable. Cleaning cannot repair structural damage.
Unsupported format or region
A player may not support the disc type or region. Compatibility is especially variable with recordable media: support can depend on the player model and how a DVD-R, DVD-RW, BD-R, or BD-RE was created and finalized. Check the manual for the exact model and disc format rather than assuming every recordable disc will play. Region compatibility can also prevent playback; Sony’s region and disc compatibility guidance explains this check.

Clean a dirty disc without making it worse
- Hold the disc by its edge to avoid adding fingerprints to the playback surface.
- Use a clean, soft, dry cloth and wipe gently in straight strokes from the center toward the outer edge. Sony recommends this center-outward method in its disc-cleaning instructions; avoid wiping in circles.
- Try the disc again after cleaning. If it still fails, check compatibility and test it in another player rather than repeating increasingly aggressive cleaning.
Follow the instructions for the specific disc and player. Sony warns against solvents such as benzine or thinner, commercial disc or lens cleaners, and vinyl anti-static spray. HP’s computer guidance allows filtered water with a lint-free cloth, but recommendations differ, so a soft, dry cloth is the conservative first step.

If several discs fail in the same player
- Try several discs that the model is known to support, and confirm each is inserted with the playback side facing the correct direction.
- Check the player’s connections and make sure the TV is set to the input connected to it.
- Restart or power-reset the player using the procedure in its manual.
- Check the manufacturer’s support page for a firmware update for the exact model, and follow its update instructions.
- If many known-good discs still fail, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
Panasonic’s DVD and Blu-ray troubleshooting guidance and LG’s Blu-ray/DVD playback support both advise using other discs to distinguish a disc-specific problem from a player-wide one, then checking the model’s setup and support options.
If you are playing the disc on a computer
A computer adds two possible failure points: the optical drive must recognize the disc, and software must be able to play the movie. HP notes that Windows 10 does not include a preinstalled DVD or Blu-ray movie player, so a recognized disc may still need compatible playback software.

For a computer where a movie skips, HP also recommends checking the disc, keeping playback software and drive updates current, disconnecting other devices, and checking whether background virus scans are affecting playback. Its troubleshooting steps include testing playback offline. These are computer-specific checks; they do not apply as universal fixes for a standalone player.

If the disc is visibly cracked or badly damaged, replacement may be the practical option. If a disc fails in more than one compatible player despite careful cleaning, its condition or recording format may be the cause. If many known-good discs fail in one device after the setup, restart, and model-specific firmware checks, seek service or manufacturer support. A scratch-removal kit is not a guaranteed repair, and the cited computer troubleshooting advice does not establish that such kits work for Blu-ray discs.
