A farm school is worth its tuition when its teaching model, support, credential and documented outcomes fit the learner’s goals at a sustainable total cost. “Farm school” can mean a child-focused homeschool cooperative or an adult farmer-training program; those are not interchangeable. Start by identifying the exact program, then compare its net cost and likely value with alternatives aimed at the same outcome.
Identify what kind of farm school you are evaluating
The label “farm school” does not identify a standard type of school or qualification. Before comparing price or outcomes, ask the provider to specify its legal and educational status, intended students, jurisdiction, duration, admissions requirements and exact credential.

For example, The Farm School’s Chicken Coop in Massachusetts describes itself as a homeschool cooperative. Its FAQ says students register as homeschool students through their local school district; the model gives the school room to emphasize farm experiences and individual interests. Its admissions page invites families to arrange a conversation or visit, including a student visit for a day or part of a day.

Richmond Farm School, run by Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Institute for Sustainable Food Systems in British Columbia, is an adult farmer-training extension program. KPU describes it as an eight-month, hands-on program and says it is non-credit. KPU’s separate Sustainable Agriculture degree is a four-year, credit-bearing program. The audiences, credentials and purposes differ, so comparing their tuition without accounting for those differences would be misleading. See KPU’s Farm School FAQ.

Set a clear goal before judging value
Write down what the learner needs next. A child’s goal might be a supportive middle-school setting or a particular balance of academics and experiential learning. An adult’s might be practical farming skills, a career change or preparation to start a farm. Compare programs only when they are intended to deliver a similar result.
A distinctive setting can be meaningful, but it does not by itself establish stronger academic results, better college admission prospects, higher earnings or greater business success. The sources available for these examples do not establish those comparative or causal outcomes. Look for evidence tied to the specific goal instead.
Evaluate the experience and support the student will receive
Inspect the weekly schedule
Ask for a typical week, not just a brochure description. Find out how much time is spent in supervised instruction, practical work and independent work; who supervises it; how attendance is tracked; and whether there are required hours outside scheduled sessions. KPU’s FAQ, for instance, describes a weekly Saturday program with changing workshops, hands-on activities, field work and seasonal harvest sessions, as well as attendance and additional farm-work expectations. That detail helps a prospective student assess the real time commitment.

Check whether the program can meet the learner’s needs
For a child-focused program, ask directly about academic, behavioral, disability, health and counseling support. The Chicken Coop FAQ says its services are more limited than those of larger schools and that staff discuss individual needs during the application process. Its student visit also gives families a chance to observe fit rather than relying solely on a written description.
Ask adult programs about safety instruction, access to instructors, feedback on practical work and support for the learner’s intended next step. In either case, request concrete examples of what help looks like and who provides it.
Verify what completion actually provides
Ask whether completion results in accreditation, academic credit, a transcript, certification or a license, and whether the next school, employer or institution will recognize it. Get confirmation from the receiving institution or employer when transfer or recognition matters; a provider’s description alone may not answer that question.

KPU says its Farm School awards a certificate of completion but provides no academic credit, and that the certificate does not transfer toward formal degree programs. Its separate Sustainable Agriculture degree is credit-bearing. If the learner needs formal credits or a transcripted qualification, that distinction may matter more than the farm-school label.

Request the curriculum, sample student work, the practical competencies students should demonstrate, completion rates and graduate destinations. For any outcome figures, ask for the dates, cohort size and denominator, and whether the information comes from an independent evaluation.
KPU lists former participants who have gone into farming, farm management, teaching, policy, nonprofits, the food industry and related roles. Its FAQ does not provide cohort counts or an independently evaluated employment rate. Treat those destinations as examples of possible paths, not a prediction of what an individual graduate will achieve.

Calculate the total net cost
Tuition is only one part of the decision. Make a written estimate for the exact year or intake and include compulsory fees, supplies, safety equipment, transportation, meals, housing, field trips and any outside services needed to support the learner. For adult training, include time away from paid work and required hours outside formal sessions. Subtract grants or tuition reductions only after confirming eligibility, award amount, deadlines, timing and renewal terms in writing. Keep loans and work-study distinct from grants: loans must be repaid, and work-study requires time.
For the 2026–27 school year, The Farm School’s Chicken Coop admissions page lists full tuition of $16,250 and a minimum tuition contribution of $1,000. It says each family’s contribution is determined through a variable-tuition process that considers a FACTS aid assessment and the family’s stated ability to pay; the tuition rate is not used to decide whether a student is offered a place. These are figures for that named program and school year, not a general farm-school price.

The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) says aid policies and award amounts vary by school. Its parent guide recommends asking about average grants, minimum family contributions, expenses beyond tuition, deadlines, types of aid and the percentage of students who receive aid. It also advises families not to assume that an income level automatically rules out applying. NAIS reports that its member schools awarded nearly $3.6 billion in need-based financial aid in 2024–25; that total is not specific to farm schools and does not show whether a particular family will qualify. See the NAIS financial-aid guide.
Compare alternatives that pursue the same goal
For a child, possible alternatives include a local public school, another independent or nature-based school, a homeschool cooperative or a lower-cost farm program. Compare academic continuity, support, schedule, transportation and total family cost.
For an adult, alternatives may include a credit-bearing agriculture degree, community-college program, apprenticeship, farm employment, shorter workshops or supervised volunteering. Compare credit and credential value, practical hours, access to instructors, business and production skills, and support after completion. These are comparison categories, not endorsements; local availability, eligibility and cost need to be checked.
KPU offers a direct example of why credentials matter: its FAQ contrasts the non-credit, eight-month Farm School with its separate four-year Sustainable Agriculture degree, which carries 123 credits. If formal credit is essential, compare programs on that basis rather than treating hands-on training and a degree as equivalent.
Questions to ask before enrolling
- What is the complete cost for this exact year or intake, including compulsory fees, equipment, transport, housing, meals and trips?
- What aid is available, how is it calculated, what are the deadlines, and must it be renewed?
- How many students receive aid, what is a typical award, and what minimum family contribution is expected?
- What credential, credits, accreditation or license does completion provide, and will the next institution or employer recognize it?
- How many hours are instruction, supervised farm work and independent work? What attendance is required?
- What skills should a learner demonstrate at completion? Can the school share a curriculum, sample work and recent outcomes with cohort sizes and dates?
- What support is available for academic, behavioral, health and accessibility needs?
- What costs and time commitments fall to the student or family beyond tuition?
- Can the learner visit, observe a class or speak with current students and recent graduates?
Match any equipment requirement to the specific program
Equipment should be part of the cost estimate only when the program requires it. KPU says it provides hand tools and machinery, while participants are responsible for season gear such as clothing, steel-toe footwear and a personal knife. If considering a comparable hands-on program, ask for its current safety and equipment list before buying anything. This guidance does not apply automatically to child-focused academic programs.
