Why Do Crocodiles Hunt Bats? What the Evidence Shows

Crocodiles can catch bats when they come within reach, but documented cases do not show that bats are a staple or preferred prey.

Crocodiles catch bats when the animals come within reach. Observations from Mexico, Australia and Gabon document bats being eaten, but they do not show that crocodiles generally specialize in bats or prefer them over other prey.

Why do crocodiles hunt bats?

Because a bat can become accessible prey near water or in a cave. In one documented case, researchers proposed that a bat flew low to drink and was caught by a young crocodile. Other observations show crocodiles eating flying foxes in Australia and cave-dwelling dwarf crocodiles catching bats in Gabon. These are distinct examples, not evidence of a shared, deliberate bat-hunting strategy.

What are the documented examples?

Place and crocodile What was observed What the evidence supports
Río Hondo, near the Mexico–Belize border; Morelet’s crocodile A 2014 natural-history note describes a yearling crocodile holding an adult Mexican greater funnel-eared bat. The authors proposed that the bat likely came low to drink. They described it as the first documented bat-prey record for this crocodile species to their knowledge. Read the 2014 note.
Kakadu National Park, Australia; estuarine crocodile A 2018 dietary study reports direct observations of crocodiles feeding on flying foxes (Pteropus sp.), alongside many other kinds of prey. Flying foxes can be part of a broad, variable diet in this setting; the study does not establish how common bats are in crocodile diets elsewhere. Read the PLOS ONE study.
Gabon; cave-dwelling dwarf crocodiles Footage reported in October 2026 shows the crocodiles snatching bats. Live Science says researchers already knew the crocodiles ate bats and insects; the footage showed how they catch prey. This account concerns a cave population, not dwarf crocodiles everywhere. Read the Live Science report.

Are bats a normal or preferred food for crocodiles?

Bats are documented prey in particular places, but the cited sources do not quantify how often crocodiles catch them across species or populations. Nor do they show that crocodiles prefer bats. The Kakadu study places flying foxes among a much wider range of prey, including mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and other animals.

For context, the Kakadu study’s authors estimated that introduced pigs and water buffalo together could contribute 53–84% of nutrition for the sampled crocodiles. That estimate concerns those two prey types in the study’s setting; it is not a measure of bat predation.

Do crocodiles leap out of the water to catch bats?

The available sources document bats being caught, but do not establish leaping as the usual or universal method. The Mexico–Belize authors suggested that the bat in their observation may have come low to drink; that is a proposed explanation for one encounter, not proof of a general tactic.

What did the recent cave footage reveal?

In a 1 October 2026 report, Live Science described footage made for Africa: Earth’s Wild Home showing cave-dwelling dwarf crocodiles in Gabon snatching bats. The report says researchers already knew the crocodiles ate bats and insects; the footage captured how they hunted them. Conservation ecologist Matt Shirley told Live Science, “I’ve been working with this population for almost 15 or 16 years now, and that’s something we’ve never been able to see.” The novelty described is seeing the behavior, not discovering that bats were part of the crocodiles’ food.
