If the local file plays smoothly but a network share or internet stream does not, investigate the network path first; that comparison narrows the problem but does not prove Wi-Fi is at fault. Then test Ethernet if your Pi supports it, check the player and media format, and confirm that the Pi has a suitable power supply for its model.
1. Identify which playback source is failing
Try a short video file stored on the Pi or on USB storage, then compare it with the problem video. Note whether the failing source is a local file, a network share, or an internet stream. Raspberry Pi’s Official Magazine home-theatre guide describes testing a local file from USB storage, while Kodi’s Raspberry Pi guidance covers local and network media.

- Local file is smooth, network playback buffers: Focus on the connection and route between the Pi and the source. For a network share, the share’s configuration and how it is mounted may also matter.
- Both local and network playback have problems: Check the player, media format, and Pi-specific hardware constraints as well as the network.
A single comparison is a diagnostic clue, not a definitive cause. A network source can be affected by conditions beyond the Pi, and a local file can still place different demands on the device depending on its format.
2. Test the connection to network media
Try Ethernet as a diagnostic
If the Pi has an Ethernet port, connect it to the network with an Ethernet cable and retry the same video. If playback improves, the result points toward the wireless connection or its route to the source; it does not establish which part of that path was responsible. If it does not improve, continue checking the player, source, and other parts of the network.

Networking differs by model. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation explains that models without a built-in Ethernet port can use a USB-to-Ethernet adapter. Check your exact model and adapter compatibility before buying one; an adapter or cable cannot resolve a bottleneck elsewhere, such as at the media source or internet service.
For a network share, consider how it is mounted
If the problem is a network share, Kodi’s community-maintained Raspberry Pi wiki suggests mounting shares through the operating system as a troubleshooting option. It is not a required setup for every share or player. Check that the share is reachable and that the Pi’s configured path points to the intended media before changing other settings.

3. Check the player and the media format
Use a player supported by your setup
Raspberry Pi OS includes VLC. Raspberry Pi’s audio and video documentation states: “VLC uses hardware acceleration in Raspberry Pi OS, and supports many popular audio and video file formats.” This describes VLC in Raspberry Pi OS; it does not mean every codec, file, or stream will play without issues.

If VLC is playing a raw H.264 stream, try a container
Raspberry Pi’s VLC documentation gives a specific workaround for raw H.264 streams: put the video in a container such as MP4. For a file named video.h264, the documented example is:
ffmpeg -r 30 -i video.h264 -c:v copy video.mp4This remuxes the input as an MP4 at 30 frames per second without re-encoding the video. It applies to this raw H.264 case, not every playback problem, codec, app, or streaming service. The command also assumes ffmpeg is installed and that the input file is accessible from the command’s working directory.

4. Confirm the Pi’s model-specific power requirements
Check the supply against the exact Raspberry Pi model in Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation. The current guide specifies 5 V at 5 A for Raspberry Pi 5 and 5 V at 3 A for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. These are model power specifications, not a diagnosis of video buffering. Use a supply suited to the model, but do not assume a different supply will fix playback unless there are symptoms that point to a power problem.
5. Treat storage speed as a separate check
Raspberry Pi’s setup documentation says storage devices with higher read and write speeds improve overall system performance. That general guidance does not establish that a faster SD card fixes network streaming or video decoding. Consider storage performance if the Pi has broader slowdowns or local-file access problems, rather than treating it as a universal buffering remedy.

Work through the checks in order
- Compare sources: Play a local file from the Pi or USB storage, then retry the same or a comparable file from the network source.
- Test the network path: Where model and setup allow, retry over Ethernet. For a Pi without a port, verify model and adapter compatibility before using USB-to-Ethernet.
- Check the share path: For network-share playback, confirm the share is reachable and consider the operating-system mount option described by Kodi.
- Check the player and format: Try a supported player such as VLC on Raspberry Pi OS, and use the MP4 remux approach only for the documented raw H.264 case.
- Verify hardware requirements: Confirm the Pi’s supply matches its model; investigate storage speed only when the symptoms also suggest general system or local-storage slowness.
