These are separate problems: waiting for fonts can address timing, but it cannot install a missing font or add missing glyphs. Diagnose availability, glyph coverage, readiness, and CSS selection in that order.
First identify which font problem you have
A CSS font-family declaration is a preferred choice, not proof that Chromium rendered that face. If the preferred face is unavailable or does not cover a character, the browser may use another face in the stack. If the intended face is still loading when the screenshot is taken, capture timing may be the issue.

| What to compare | What to check | What a problem suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Can the Chromium process fetch the web-font file, or is the required system font installed in its runtime? | A failed or inaccessible font resource, or a font absent from the operating system or container. |
| Coverage | Does the actual face contain the characters and symbols shown in the image? | Fallback for particular glyphs, even when other text uses the intended face. |
| Readiness | Has the page reached the relevant content, and have used fonts finished loading before capture? | The screenshot may have been taken during font loading. |
| Application | Does the rendered element use the intended family, weight, and style? | A CSS rule, weight mismatch, or fallback stack may select another face. |
Start by recording the Chromium version, automation library and version, operating system or container image, target page, screenshot settings, and the specific text or script that looks wrong. Compare local and deployed runs with the same browser version and page inputs where possible.

Wait for the page content, then wait for fonts
Wait for the application content you intend to capture before using the Font Loading API. document.fonts.ready resolves when loading and layout operations for fonts used by the document have settled. It is a loading barrier, not proof that the preferred typeface loaded successfully or that the runtime has the font installed.

Puppeteer example
This example waits for a page-specific element, then waits for font loading before taking a screenshot. Replace the selector, URL, and output path for your page.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.waitForSelector('#content');
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Use a selector that means the content being captured is actually present; the example’s #content is not a universal page condition. If the application renders content asynchronously, wait for its real completion condition before the font wait. A network-idle condition alone does not establish that the intended font loaded successfully.

Inspect the font set in the page
After the content appears, inspect the document’s font loading status and face statuses in the same Chromium session used for capture:
const fontState = await page.evaluate(() => ({
status: document.fonts.status,
faces: Array.from(document.fonts, face => ({
family: face.family,
style: face.style,
weight: face.weight,
status: face.status
}))
}));
console.log(fontState);
A settled document font set does not guarantee that every declared face succeeded or that each character used it. Check the relevant face’s status and inspect how the specific text renders. If exact typeface identity matters, verify it independently rather than treating document.fonts.ready as confirmation.

Check font requests, CSS, and glyph coverage
- Check the stylesheet and font requests. In the browser’s network activity, look for failed requests, access restrictions, an incorrect URL or base path, and an unexpected response. Confirm that the font file is actually returned to the browser process.
- Check the rule applied to the affected text. Verify the computed family, weight, and style, and ensure the requested weight or style is available. A face defined in CSS may not be the face selected for the element.
- Check the actual characters. Compare text that renders correctly with the missing letters or symbols. A font can cover one script but not another, leaving only some glyphs to fallback.
- Compare environments. Repeat the check locally and in the deployed environment using the same page and browser version. A Puppeteer report describes Arabic glyph fallback that differed between local and Google Cloud Function environments; it is an example of environment-dependent behavior, not evidence of a universal Chromium defect.
Fix missing fonts in Linux containers
When Chromium runs in a container, inspect fonts in the exact image and under the same user and runtime that launch Chromium. A font installed on a developer’s host is not automatically present in the container. Add the specific font files or packages needed for the site’s typeface and scripts, and confirm they are available to the running browser.
Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guidance lists Linux dependencies and notes that Chinese, Japanese, or Korean characters may require additional font files. Package names depend on the Linux distribution and image; choose the required fonts for your base image rather than copying an unrelated package list. Check both installed fonts and coverage for the affected script.

Installing system fonts is not a substitute for checking web-font requests. Conversely, a successful web-font request does not prove that the face includes every character in the screenshot. Recheck the captured text after changing the runtime and ensure the same Chromium process is using the updated environment.
Understand font-display and invisible text
font-display affects how text appears while a custom font is loading; it does not install a font or provide missing glyphs. Chrome Developers explains that some browsers hide text until the font loads, causing a flash of invisible text (FOIT). Values such as swap, optional, and fallback allow a system font to be used when the custom face is not ready, but that fallback can look different.
Best Value
Choose a value based on the page’s desired loading behavior and assess the resulting fallback visually. If a screenshot must show the custom face, still confirm that its resource is available, it covers the needed characters, and it has loaded before capture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Puppeteer PDF-specific font behavior
Puppeteer’s PDF API documents a waitForFonts option that uses document.fonts.ready and defaults to true. That PDF setting should not be assumed to define the behavior of every screenshot API or automation library. The same API documentation notes that bringing a page to the foreground may be required if it is backgrounded and font readiness stalls during PDF rendering; treat that as a PDF-specific troubleshooting note, not a general explanation for missing screenshot fonts.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| All text uses a visibly different face | Font availability, failed font request, or CSS family/weight selection. | Inspect font network requests and the rule applied to the captured text; check whether the required system font is available in the runtime. |
| Only certain letters, symbols, or a script differ | Glyph coverage or language-specific font availability. | Check whether the selected face contains those characters and add an appropriate font to the exact container if required. |
| The screenshot sometimes shows a fallback face | Capture timing or inconsistent page readiness. | Wait for the actual content condition, then await document.fonts.ready; inspect face states and repeat in the same environment. |
| Local output is correct but container output is not | Different installed fonts, runtime user, browser version, or environment configuration. | Compare the exact image, user, browser version, page inputs, and font availability between runs. |
| Text is temporarily invisible or appears late | Font loading behavior, including font-display. |
Consider a suitable display value and evaluate its fallback; separately fix any unavailable font or missing glyph. |
| A Playwright or Chromium issue report seems similar | A potentially related but not necessarily general browser or automation issue. | Reduce the page to a small reproduction and capture browser and automation versions, environment, font states, and request diagnostics before attributing the cause. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot without setting up Chromium yourself, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one request. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients.

Make a reliable reproduction before blaming Chromium
Reduce the case to a small page that uses the affected family and characters, then reproduce it in the same container and browser version as the failing capture. Preserve the page inputs, screenshot settings, font state, and request diagnostics. Issue reports can show that a behavior was observed, but one report does not establish a universal Chromium cause or fix.
