Android phones get updates at different times because each release must be adapted and checked for specific phone models and software variants, may involve carrier testing, and can be distributed in stages. A phone may also be outside its manufacturer’s support period. The exact timing depends on the model, carrier, region, update type and rollout—not just the Android version.
Why the same Android update reaches phones at different times
Manufacturers adapt and verify updates for each device
An Android release is not one identical package that can be sent to every phone. Manufacturers customize software for their devices and check that it works with a model’s hardware and components. Because models differ, the work and timing can differ too. The Federal Trade Commission’s 2018 report on mobile security updates describes manufacturers’ roles in applying updates, customizing software and testing compatibility. A separate study of Android security-update records, including updates through 2023, examines how device-specific update support varies: 50 Shades of Support: A Device-Centric Analysis of Android Security Updates.

Carrier and regional variants can add checks
Some update paths include carrier testing for network compatibility and device functions. The FTC report describes checks that may cover calling, voicemail, roaming, emergency calls, data use and memory. Testing can be specific to a device and carrier; carriers may test at the same time but finish at different times. This explains one possible source of delay, but it does not mean every carrier approves every Android update.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Samsung says factory-unlocked devices may require more testing because they must work across carriers, and can therefore receive updates later than carrier-branded devices. That is a Samsung support statement, not a universal rule that unlocked phones always update first or last. See Samsung’s software-update guidance.

Rollouts can be gradual even after release
An announcement that an update is available does not necessarily mean every eligible phone can install it that day. Google says Pixel updates roll out gradually, depend on the carrier and device, and may take a few weeks to reach an individual Pixel. Google’s Android guidance also describes Android 17 distribution in staged batches; Samsung says a newly released update may be distributed in waves. These are examples of staged releases, not a platform-wide estimate of how long any Android owner will wait.
What kind of update is your phone waiting for?
“Android update” can refer to different changes, and they do not all follow the same release path.

- Firmware or security update: supplies patches for Android and device-specific software. Its schedule can differ from major-version upgrades.
- Google Play system update: updates supported modular Android components separately from a full operating-system upgrade.
- Android feature drop: some features arrive through Google Play Services or app updates, so they may not require the newest Android version. Others require particular hardware or a newer OS.
- Pixel Drop: a separate set of features for Pixel phones, with availability tied to the device.
Google’s Android feature guidance distinguishes broadly available Android Drops from device-specific Pixel features. As a result, a phone can receive an app or system-component change without receiving a full OS upgrade.

A phone can be delayed because a rollout has not reached it yet, or it may not qualify for that update at all. Manufacturers set support policies by model, so a promise made for one phone should not be assumed to apply to another from the same brand.

| Example policy | What it covers | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 8 and later: seven years of OS and security updates | Published update-support duration | Google counts from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the US. Earlier Pixel models have different periods. See Google’s Pixel update-support page. |
| Selected Samsung Galaxy devices: up to seven years of security updates | Security-update support for eligible devices | Samsung’s policy page also lists monthly, quarterly and biannual schedules for selected devices. The seven-year extension was stated as of January 2024; it is not a promise that every Galaxy gets monthly patches or a particular major Android upgrade. See Samsung Mobile Security’s scope page. |
Support duration and release cadence answer different questions. A device’s support window indicates how long updates are promised under the stated policy; a monthly, quarterly or biannual schedule describes the listed security-update cadence for selected models. Neither by itself gives the date a particular major Android version will arrive.

- Identify the exact model and software variant. Check whether the phone is carrier-branded or factory-unlocked, and note its region. Update information for another variant or a related model may not apply.
- Check the phone’s update screen. On a Pixel, open Settings > System > Software update to view status and check for an update. Google directs owners of other Android devices to their manufacturer or carrier for device-specific information.
- Check the manufacturer or carrier’s update information. For a carrier-sold Samsung device, Samsung recommends checking carrier update information; its carrier pages may include update histories. Compare the exact model and variant, rather than relying on an announcement for the brand generally.
- Confirm what update is being discussed. Check whether the notice is for an Android version upgrade, a security patch, a Google Play system update or a feature delivered through an app or service. These can have different eligibility and timing.
If a phone appears eligible but has not received an update, confirm its exact variant and consult the relevant manufacturer or carrier status information. A release announcement or another owner’s experience does not establish the rollout date for your device.
