How Much RAM Do You Need for Gaming and Everyday PC Use?

For basic PC use, 8 GB is a sensible target; 16 GB is a practical gaming baseline for some titles, while 32 GB can help with heavier multitasking. Check your PC’s memory support before upgrading.

For everyday browsing, documents and streaming, 8 GB is a reasonable target; Microsoft describes 4 GB as enough for basic use and recommends 8 GB for longer-term use. For gaming, 16 GB is a practical baseline for the two example games whose requirements are cited here, while 32 GB can offer more room for gaming alongside demanding apps, streaming or recording. Your actual needs depend on the games, settings, background workload and the memory your computer supports.

RAM recommendations by workload

What you do Practical guidance What the figure means
Browsing, documents and video streaming 8 GB is a reasonable target for longer-term use; Microsoft says at least 4 GB for basic use. These are general-use recommendations, not a guarantee that every modern app combination will feel comfortable. Microsoft Support
Gaming with few other apps open 16 GB is a practical starting point for the example titles below. It meets the listed RAM requirement for Cyberpunk 2077 and Starfield, but requirements are title-specific and do not guarantee a particular frame rate or settings level. CD PROJEKT RED; Steam
Gaming with a browser, chat, capture or streaming software open Consider 32 GB if those apps are part of your regular workload. More capacity can provide multitasking headroom, but no universal 16 GB-versus-32 GB threshold is established. A 2026 report covering selected games found similar results in several tests, with exceptions. PC Gamer
Photo/video editing or other high-performance work Microsoft suggests 16 GB or more for some such workloads. The software and project size affect what is sufficient. Microsoft Support

Why the Windows 11 minimum is not a gaming recommendation

Microsoft lists 4 GB RAM as the minimum requirement for Windows 11. That number is an operating-system threshold, not a target for gaming or a promise of comfortable performance with multiple apps. Microsoft also notes that particular features, applications or hardware may need more. Windows 11 specifications

For basic browsing, documents or online video, Microsoft’s general memory guide says to aim for at least 4 GB and recommends 8 GB for longer-term use. It suggests 16 GB or more for photo/video editing and other higher-performance work. Those are broad recommendations: the programs you run together and the size of your work matter.

What 16 GB and 32 GB mean for gaming

16 GB: a practical baseline, not a guarantee

The official Cyberpunk 2077 PC requirements list 16 GB RAM, and Steam’s Starfield requirements listing also specifies 16 GB. These are requirements for those individual titles, not a rule that every game needs 16 GB. Meeting the RAM figure alone does not establish that a PC will run a game smoothly: the rest of the system and the game’s settings matter too.

32 GB: more room for simultaneous work

RAM holds data that apps are actively using. Microsoft explains that more memory lets a device do more at once without slowdowns. That makes extra capacity potentially useful when a demanding game runs alongside a browser, chat, capture or streaming software.

A PC Gamer report published April 10, 2026, compared 16 GB and 32 GB in selected demanding games. It described similar results in several titles, exceptions in others, and less spare memory when background apps were open. Those comparisons are limited to the games and hardware in that report; they do not establish a universal performance result.

Check compatibility before upgrading

Capacity is only one part of an upgrade decision. Your computer may have a memory limit, use a particular memory generation, or have memory that cannot be replaced. Check the PC or motherboard maker’s specifications for the exact model before buying; do not assume a kit will fit based on capacity alone.

  1. Identify your computer’s exact model, or your motherboard model if it is a desktop you assembled.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s supported memory capacity and upgrade instructions for that model.
  3. Confirm whether memory is replaceable and which type and configuration the system supports.
  4. If the specifications are unclear, ask the PC manufacturer or a knowledgeable retailer to verify compatibility before purchasing.

Microsoft notes that some PCs with less than 4 GB may have upgrade options and directs owners to their computer manufacturer or a retailer for advice. Windows 11 specifications
