A higher purchase price helps generate revenue, but it does not correspond to a fixed slice of one game’s budget or guarantee a particular feature. Publishers may also earn from subscriptions, microtransactions and optional content.
What makes an AAA game expensive to develop?
The largest cost is not just the visible game world or its graphics. Production involves personnel across studios, external development, contracted services, software and infrastructure. Electronic Arts (EA), for example, says its research and development (R&D) expenses include production-studio personnel and overhead, external development, contracted services, depreciation, platform software and related costs. That list illustrates the range of work behind a large release; it is not a breakdown of any one game’s budget.

Scale and time compound those costs. A project that involves many people working over a long period has a larger personnel bill, while a broader production can require more external work and technical support. Boston Consulting Group (BCG) reported that PC and console AAA budgets grew at a 6% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2017 through 2022. BCG forecast an 8% CAGR from 2022 through 2028; that is a forecast for aggregate budgets, not a rule for every game or its retail price. BCG’s 2024 analysis describes both the past growth and outlook.
Public company expense reports can show the scale and categories of spending, but not what a particular title cost. In its FY2026 filing, EA reported company-wide R&D expense of $2.828 billion, 10% above FY2025. EA attributed the increase mainly to personnel costs, studio contracted services and digital infrastructure. Those figures cover the company, not a single game. EA’s FY2026 Form 10-K provides the expense definition and reported totals.

Why does the price include marketing?
Making a game and selling it are separate cost centers. Advertising, promotion, marketing staff and related overhead can add substantially to a publisher’s spending, particularly around a major launch. EA reported $1.128 billion in company-wide marketing and sales expense for FY2026, 17% above FY2025, mainly due to advertising and marketing for Battlefield 6. This is not Battlefield 6’s marketing budget: it is EA’s total for that expense category across the company. EA’s filing defines marketing and sales expenses and explains the year-over-year increase.
What does the money pay for after launch?
For a game sold as a finished, mainly offline product, much of the core production and launch spending happens before release. Online and live-service games can require ongoing investment after launch: servers and data centers, matchmaking, operations, community engagement, player support and new content. BCG notes that live-service games can involve longer development and continued operating costs as content is added. Its 2024 analysis discusses these demands.

That distinction matters when comparing two games with similar launch prices. One may rely mostly on an upfront purchase, while another may be designed for continued updates and services. A higher initial price alone does not reveal how much post-launch support a game will receive or how its publisher plans to fund that support.
How do distribution and revenue models affect the economics?
Digital sales versus physical retail
Digital distribution generally costs less to sell through than traditional retail and distribution channels, according to EA. In an FY2024 filing, EA estimated that 73% of its Xbox and PlayStation units sold were digital. That percentage applies to EA’s own sales on those platforms in FY2024, not to the whole industry. EA’s FY2024 Form 10-Q discusses its estimate and the differing distribution costs.

Premium purchases, subscriptions and extra content
A game’s sticker price is only one possible source of revenue. The European Parliament’s study of the video game sector identifies digital sales, subscriptions and microtransactions among current business models. EA also describes games offered with no upfront cost that earn revenue through services and extra content, and says live-service revenue is material to its business. The European Parliament study surveys business models; EA’s FY2026 filing discusses the company’s revenue streams.
These models mean a publisher’s return may come from several places rather than from the initial purchase alone. They also make it misleading to assume that every extra dollar on a premium game pays for a specific amount of development, marketing or online service.

Does a higher price mean a bigger budget or a better game?
Not necessarily. Individual AAA budgets are often confidential, and aggregate budget growth does not establish a title’s cost, the reason for its retail price or its value to a player. Price is shaped by the publisher’s commercial decisions and revenue model; the evidence above does not tie a particular $70 or $80 price point to a specific game budget. A price can help fund a costly production, but it is not a transparent invoice or a guarantee of quality, scope or longevity.
