Dinosaurs living at broadly similar times in southern Africa did not share one uniform landscape or one regional fauna. Late Triassic rocks near Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba preserve a river-associated setting with signs of more persistent freshwater, while broadly comparable rocks in South Africa and Lesotho are described as representing drier environments. The fossils also record local coexistence, later changes in sauropodomorph diversity, and major gaps in sampling. Habitat differences probably mattered, but the evidence does not show that climate alone created the regional contrasts.
What “the same period” means in this fossil record
Geological periods are long intervals. Saying that two dinosaurs lived in the Late Triassic or near the Triassic–Jurassic boundary does not mean they lived in the same year, on the same floodplain or under identical conditions. Southern Africa covered a large area of the Gondwanan interior, and local river systems, floodplains and uplands could support different communities even when their rocks have similar broad ages.

The comparison is therefore between fossil-bearing regions and intervals, not a single census of all dinosaurs alive across southern Africa. The most useful evidence comes from four questions: how the rocks are dated and positioned, what environments the associated fossils indicate, which animals occur together, and how complete the fossil sample is.

Lake Kariba rocks preserve a wetter local setting
Natural History Museum reporting on discoveries near Lake Kariba places the Zimbabwean fossils at about 210 million years old, in the Late Triassic. Associated fossils include lungfish and crocodile-like phytosaurs. Those animals are evidence for more permanent bodies of water than the similarly aged areas described elsewhere in southern Africa. The evidence supports a river-associated ecosystem with persistent freshwater; it does not establish a particular rainfall total or prove that water availability directly determined which dinosaur species evolved there.

A river system also creates a mosaic rather than a single habitat. Channels, levees, flood basins and seasonally dry ground can sit close together while offering different plants, nesting sites and feeding opportunities. Animals from nearby areas may be preserved together after floods, or they may represent communities that used the same river corridor at different times. That is why environmental interpretation must be tied to the sediment and associated fossils rather than inferred from a dinosaur name alone.
Two close relatives occur in the same rocks
The Zimbabwean rocks yielded two named sauropodomorphs: Musango matusadonaensis and Musankwa sanyatiensis. A family-tree analysis places them as each other’s closest relatives, within Unaysauridae, a group known from Africa, India and South America when those landmasses were part of Gondwana. Their occurrence in the same local rock sequence demonstrates that a single ecosystem could contain more than one closely related long-necked dinosaur.
Musango is estimated at about 4.5 metres long and 222 kilograms. The known skeleton is partial and lacks a skull, so its diet cannot be observed directly. Professor Paul Barrett said it was likely an herbivore or omnivore based on relatives, but that certainty is impossible without the head. The animal’s missing skull is a reminder that a species description can be strong enough for taxonomy while leaving major questions about behavior and feeding unresolved.
One plausible explanation for two related sauropodomorphs sharing a landscape is resource partitioning. Adults might have browsed at different heights, selected different plants or used different parts of the floodplain. That is an ecological hypothesis, not direct evidence: fossils do not show the animals feeding side by side. Body-size differences, seasonal movements and habitat preferences are other possibilities that require additional specimens and environmental data.

Why the South Africa–Lesotho record does not match Zimbabwe’s
Drier settings could filter which animals were common
The South Africa–Lesotho fossil record is described as coming from drier areas than the river-associated Zimbabwean setting. Drier landscapes can still contain rivers and temporary pools, but water and vegetation may be less evenly distributed. Such conditions can favor animals able to travel between patches, tolerate seasonal shortages or exploit different plant resources from those available beside a more permanent river.
This comparison should not be turned into a simple “wet places had one dinosaur and dry places had another” rule. The rocks capture particular moments and locations, and the environmental descriptions are regional generalizations. Local dry-season refuges, changing river courses and shifts in vegetation could all alter which animals were preserved.
The Elliot Formation spans a transition in time
Much of the South Africa–Lesotho evidence comes from the Elliot Formation, which crosses the Triassic–Jurassic transition. A 2017 study summarized by the University of Cape Town found greater taxonomic and morphological diversity among sauropodomorphs in the Early Jurassic upper beds than previously recognized. The lower, Late Triassic part of the formation remains poorly understood, so the apparent increase is partly a discovery about the fossil record itself: new finds and revised identifications changed the picture.

Earlier assessments divided the formation into a simple lower “Euskelosaurus” range zone and an upper “Massospondylus” range zone. The study revised that zonation using new fossil discoveries, taxonomic revision, lithostratigraphy and improved knowledge of where specimens came from in the rock column. Better classification and better placement in the sequence can reveal diversity that older schemes combined or overlooked.

Consequently, the upper Elliot Formation should not be treated as a complete list of all Early Jurassic sauropodomorphs, nor should its greater recognized diversity be assigned automatically to a single climatic cause. Evolutionary turnover across the boundary, changes in environments and improved sampling all remain relevant.
A comparison of the main evidence
| Evidence axis | Zimbabwe, near Lake Kariba | South Africa and Lesotho, Elliot Formation | What it can and cannot show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad age | Late Triassic rocks, about 210 million years old | Lower beds span the Late Triassic; upper beds record Early Jurassic sauropodomorphs | These intervals overlap broadly but are not one precisely simultaneous community. |
| Environmental indicators | Lungfish and phytosaurs support more permanent freshwater and a river-associated setting | The areas are described as relatively drier; local watercourses still existed | Associated fossils indicate habitat conditions, not a measured rainfall regime or a sole cause of species composition. |
| Animal evidence | Musango matusadonaensis and Musankwa sanyatiensis occur in the same rocks and are close relatives | Upper Elliot beds show more sauropodomorph taxonomic and morphological diversity than previously recognized | Both records demonstrate local diversity, but they do not provide a complete regional count. |
| Confidence limits | Zimbabwe is understudied; the key Musango skeleton is partial and lacks a skull | Lower Elliot diagnostic features can be fragmentary and relatively homogeneous; stratigraphic provenance has improved over time | Future finds or revised identifications could change the comparison. |
Four processes that can produce different dinosaur faunas
1. Habitat patchiness
Southern Africa’s ancient landscapes were not uniform. A permanent river corridor can support aquatic animals, lush banks and concentrated food, while nearby ground experiences stronger seasonal drying. Dinosaurs moving through those settings would encounter different risks and resources. Even closely related species could persist if each used a different part of the habitat.
2. Resource partitioning within one community
The two Zimbabwean sauropodomorphs show why regional differences do not require complete geographic separation. Related animals can coexist by feeding at different heights, selecting different plants or using different microhabitats. The proposed browsing difference between Musango and Musankwa is plausible because of their relationships and anatomy, but it remains an interpretation rather than a behavior observed in the fossil record.

The boundary was a time of evolutionary change. A fauna in Late Triassic lower beds need not look like one in Early Jurassic upper beds, even in the same broad region. Extinctions, dispersal and the appearance of new forms can alter communities independently of local habitat differences. The Elliot Formation study’s revised zonation is important because a reliable sequence is necessary before changes can be assigned to a particular interval.

4. Uneven preservation and research
Fossils are not a random sample of living animals. Rivers can concentrate bones, but they can also destroy or bury them selectively. Large, durable bones are easier to recognize than delicate or incomplete remains. Zimbabwe has received less sustained study than some South African and Lesotho localities, and the lower Elliot Formation contains fragmentary material with limited diagnostic features. A region can therefore appear less diverse because fewer fossils have been found, identified or placed securely in time.
Why climate alone is not an adequate explanation
Environmental differences are part of the explanation, but the available studies do not establish climate as the sole driver. The Zimbabwe evidence combines geological setting and associated aquatic fossils; the Elliot work combines fossil discoveries, taxonomy, lithostratigraphy and stratigraphic provenance. Those approaches address different sources of variation.
A stronger climate-only claim would require closely dated sites, independent environmental measurements and enough specimens to separate genuine absence from missing evidence. The current record does not provide an attributable percentage showing that one region was a fixed amount more diverse than another. It supports a patchwork model in which habitat, evolutionary history, dispersal and sampling all interact.

Musango and Musankwa: a same-rock comparison
These two Zimbabwean sauropodomorphs are the clearest example of dinosaurs sharing a local ecosystem. Both come from the Late Triassic Lake Kariba region, and their close relationship makes questions about coexistence especially useful. Their exact diets and behavior remain uncertain because key anatomical material, including the Musango skull, is missing.

Lesothosaurus diagnosticus: an Early Jurassic example
Lesothosaurus diagnosticus comes from present-day South Africa and Lesotho and is Early Jurassic, so it is not a direct same-time counterpart to the Late Triassic Zimbabwean pair. A Natural History Museum account reports growth lines indicating that it may have reached adult size in roughly two to four years. The same report describes a bonebed suggesting social aggregation; Professor Barrett noted that this is direct evidence of the species living together in groups, something not previously established for Lesothosaurus.
This example is valuable for understanding behavior and later regional faunas, but placing it beside the Zimbabwean species without stating the age difference would create a misleading comparison.
What new discoveries could change the picture
- More complete Zimbabwean skeletons, especially skulls, could test diet and distinguish ecological roles.
- Additional lower Elliot Formation specimens could clarify the poorly understood Late Triassic fauna.
- Precisely recorded stratigraphic provenance would show whether apparently different animals were truly contemporaneous.
- More sedimentological and associated-fossil data could refine the contrast between permanent-water and drier settings.
- Revised taxonomy may merge some named forms or reveal that previously combined material represents multiple species.
The Natural History Museum reports that expedition teams worked in 2017 and 2018 and that prepared material was returned to the Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe after study at South Africa’s Evolutionary Studies Institute. Continued fieldwork matters because the current Zimbabwean sample is both scientifically significant and small.

Dinosaurs from the same broad period differed across southern Africa because “the same period” contained multiple habitats and changing communities, not one continent-wide ecosystem. Zimbabwe’s Late Triassic Lake Kariba region preserves a more strongly river-linked setting and two close sauropodomorph relatives in the same rocks. South Africa and Lesotho preserve a different environmental context and a sauropodomorph record whose recognized diversity increases in the Early Jurassic upper Elliot beds. Those patterns are consistent with local ecological specialization and faunal turnover, while incomplete fossils and uneven study prevent a single-cause conclusion.
