YouTube’s published guidance does not establish a universal rule that automatically ends every livestream after 24 hours. Its 12-hour guidance concerns whether a stream is archived and whether viewers can rewind—not a stated cutoff for the live feed. If a church broadcast actually stopped, check the event’s Live Control Room errors, encoder records, network or power interruptions, and copyright or policy notices to identify the cause.
First, identify what “ended” means
A live service can appear to end for three different reasons: the live feed stopped, the replay is missing or incomplete, or viewers can no longer rewind to earlier parts. These are separate issues. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on long streams. Neither warning says that YouTube automatically stops the live feed after 24 hours.

- Live feed stopped: viewers could no longer watch the event live. Look for an error, an encoder stop, a network or power interruption, or an enforcement notice.
- Replay missing or incomplete: the stream may have exceeded YouTube’s stated archive threshold. Do not assume a complete replay will be available for a stream longer than 12 hours.
- Rewind stopped reaching earlier content: this may reflect the documented DVR limitation on long streams rather than a stopped broadcast.
YouTube also describes a limit on how many live streams a channel can create in a 24-hour period. That is a creation limit, not a stated maximum duration for one continuous broadcast.

How to diagnose a broadcast that actually stopped
- Open the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Note the stream health indicator, every displayed error, and its timestamp. YouTube says errors appear next to the health indicator; the timing helps you compare them with encoder, network, and power records.
- Check whether the encoder stopped sending. Review the encoder’s output and logs, including whether it was configured with the intended YouTube server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder guidance also identifies an incorrect stream format—such as using something other than H.264 video and AAC audio—as an error to check.
- Compare the error time with network and power events. Look for an upload connection disruption, router or ISP outage, power loss, or a failover event. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
- Check YouTube Studio for copyright or Community Guidelines notices. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the picture with a placeholder and warn the broadcaster; if the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate a stream.
- Compare the live event with the local recording. If the local file continues while YouTube’s live event stops, that is useful evidence when tracing the interruption. If both stop at the same time, investigate the encoder, computer, power, and local network as well.
Copyright and music in a church service
A song being used during worship does not, by itself, prove that copyright enforcement caused a particular interruption. But churches need the necessary rights for music and other third-party material used in a livestream. YouTube says a live stream can be interrupted when it detects copyrighted content that remains in the broadcast. Its guidance also notes that even licensed third-party material can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID.

If the notice points to music or other protected material, confirm the licence covers livestreaming on YouTube and ask the rights holder whether the channel needs Content ID allowlisting. Do not infer the cause from the service content alone; use the notice and event records.
Keep future services recoverable
- Record locally as well as streaming. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. Verify that the recording file exists, is intact, and continues growing during the service.
- Monitor the live dashboard. Check stream health and error timestamps during the broadcast so an interruption is noticed promptly.
- Test backup-encoder failover before relying on it. YouTube recommends testing the backup path; a failover that has never been exercised is not a dependable recovery plan.
- Plan the replay separately from the live service. Because YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, retain a local recording if a complete replay matters.
A professional hardware encoder may suit a higher-production event, and YouTube recommends such encoders for higher-production-value streams. Buying one is not, by itself, a diagnosis or a guarantee against a long-stream interruption.
