Set the browser viewport to the report’s target width and height in CSS pixels before loading the page, then capture the viewport—not the full page. In Playwright, use page.setViewportSize() followed by page.screenshot(). Record the URL, browser and version, viewport, image scale, capture time, and whether the image shows the viewport or the full document so the evidence can be interpreted and reproduced.
Capture a specific desktop viewport with Playwright
For a scripted report capture, set the viewport dimensions explicitly before navigating to the page. This example uses a 1440 × 900 CSS-pixel viewport and saves the currently visible page area as a PNG.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
await browser.close();
- Replace
https://example.comwith the page you need to document. - Set
widthandheightto the requested desktop viewport dimensions, in CSS pixels. - Run the script and attach
screenshot.pngto the report, along with the capture details listed below.
Playwright’s screenshot API also supports image-format and clip-area options. Use a clip when you need a particular rectangular region rather than the whole viewport. Its full-page mode is a separate setting: it captures the scrollable document rather than just the visible viewport. See the Playwright screenshot documentation.

| Capture type | What it shows | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport | The page area visible at the chosen viewport dimensions. | The report is documenting how the layout appears at a particular desktop screen size. |
| Full page | The complete scrollable document, which may be much taller than the viewport. | The report needs content below the fold. In Playwright, enable the full-page option explicitly. |
| Element | A selected page component without the surrounding page context. | The report is specifically about that component. Playwright supports targeting an element for a screenshot. |
Do not describe a full-page image as a viewport screenshot: the two images document different things. Playwright documents these modes and options in its screenshot guide.

Choose an image scale that matches the report
Playwright offers css and device screenshot scales. With css, one image pixel corresponds to one CSS pixel. With device, image pixels follow the device scale factor, so output dimensions can be larger on high-DPI settings.
- Use
csswhen the image should correspond directly to the CSS-pixel viewport dimensions. - Use
devicewhen higher pixel density matters more than matching those dimensions one-to-one.
State the scale in the report metadata. A viewport of 1440 × 900 CSS pixels does not necessarily produce an image file with those exact pixel dimensions if device scale is used. Details are in the Playwright screenshot API.

Record enough detail to reproduce the capture
For useful report evidence, record settings that affect the output:
- Page URL
- Browser and version
- Viewport width and height in CSS pixels
- Screenshot scale
- Capture date and time
- Whether the image is viewport-only or full-page
This is a practical record-keeping recommendation based on the capture settings, not a prescribed reporting standard.

Capture manually in Firefox
For a one-off capture, Firefox’s developer tools can take a full-page screenshot from the screenshot toolbar. To capture a single component, use the Inspector’s Screenshot Node command. The web console also provides a :screenshot helper with options for full-page capture, a CSS selector, a delay, an output filename, and device-pixel ratio. Consult Firefox’s web console command-line documentation for its helper options.
For a report that requires a precise desktop viewport, make sure the browser window or responsive-design viewport is set to the intended dimensions before capturing. Record those dimensions in CSS pixels and distinguish a viewport capture from a full-page result.

Troubleshoot mismatched or incomplete screenshots
- The layout does not match the requested desktop size: Set the viewport dimensions before navigating to the page, and verify that the values are CSS pixels rather than image-file pixels.
- The image is taller than expected: Check whether full-page capture was enabled. A full-page screenshot includes content beyond the visible viewport.
- The saved pixel dimensions differ from the viewport: Check the screenshot scale. Device scale can produce more image pixels per CSS pixel.
- The image shows only a component: Check whether an element or clip-area capture was requested instead of a viewport capture.
- The Firefox result omits surrounding context: The Inspector’s Screenshot Node command captures the selected element, not the entire page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot itself prove what every visitor saw?
No. It records a particular page state under the browser, viewport, and capture settings used; it does not establish that all users or sessions saw the same result.
Should I use a physical monitor to capture a particular desktop size?
No. Browser developer tools and automation frameworks can set or capture a viewport without a dedicated physical screenshot device.
