Windows can use extra storage while downloading and applying an update, installing applicable optional content, and keeping files that let you remove the update or return to the previous Windows version. To find what is taking space, check Settings > System > Storage before deleting anything. The category breakdown helps identify possible cleanup targets, but by itself it cannot prove which update component caused a change.
Why an update can use more storage
Windows may need temporary room for update files and may preserve data needed to remove an update. Microsoft describes this as temporary space; its guidance says, “Additional space is temporarily required to support removal of the update (typically for 10 days).” The amount used varies by device and update path, so there is no reliable universal figure for how much an update will add.

Windows Storage also groups disk use into categories such as Temporary files and System & reserved. Those categories can help explain what occupies the drive now, but they are not proof that a particular update caused the increase. Microsoft’s Storage settings in Windows explains the category view.

Find where the space is being used
- Check the Windows drive: Open File Explorer, select This PC, and note the available space on the drive that contains Windows, usually C:.
- Open the category breakdown: Go to Settings > System > Storage. Review the categories shown, including Temporary files and System & reserved.
- Compare with an earlier record, if available: A previous screenshot or recorded free-space figure can confirm that space changed. Without one, the current view shows where storage is used now, not exactly when or why it grew.
For help understanding the overview, see Microsoft’s Storage settings in Windows.

Choose cleanup items with care
Windows’ built-in tools show cleanup categories and, in some cases, estimated savings. Review what each selection removes and choose only items you are comfortable deleting. Estimated savings are specific to the device; actual recovered space can vary.
Cleanup recommendations and Temporary files
Open Settings > System > Storage, then select Cleanup recommendations or Temporary files, depending on what Windows displays. Recommendations can surface temporary files, large or unused files, unused apps, and cloud-synced content. Check the listed items before selecting them: files in Downloads or other personal locations may be ones you still need. Microsoft’s Free up drive space in Windows describes these options.

Disk Cleanup and system files
Disk Cleanup can offer system-file cleanup choices, including Previous Windows Installation(s) after an upgrade. Read the item descriptions before confirming removal. Do not manually delete Windows system folders; use Windows’ cleanup controls instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDecide whether to keep the previous Windows installation
The previous installation is recovery data: removing it ends the option to return to the prior Windows version using those files. If the updated system is working and you do not expect to roll back, you can remove Previous Windows Installation(s) through the cleanup choices Windows provides. If you may need to go back, leave it in place while the rollback option remains available.

Microsoft says Windows automatically deletes the previous installation 10 days after an upgrade. The space it occupies depends on the individual installation; Microsoft’s guidance does not establish a fixed amount. See Delete your previous version of Windows for the rollback consequence and removal guidance.
Configure Storage Sense for ongoing cleanup
Storage Sense can automatically remove selected temporary files and Recycle Bin contents, but its behavior depends on the settings you choose. It operates on the system drive. Downloads and cloud content are not managed unless you configure those options, so check the settings rather than assuming Storage Sense will—or will not—remove a particular file.

For OneDrive cloud files, Microsoft says that in Windows 11 version 22H2 the default Storage Sense setting can make files online-only if they have not been opened for more than 30 days. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from online-only management. This is a setting detail, not a promise that Storage Sense will reclaim a particular amount of space. Review Manage drive space with Storage Sense before enabling automatic cleanup.
Look for other storage users if cleanup is still needed
If update-related temporary or recovery files do not explain the space use, use Cleanup recommendations to review large or unused files and apps. You can also move personal files to another drive. If you already use OneDrive, eligible inactive cloud files can be made online-only so their contents are not kept locally; files set to Always keep on this device remain exempt. These are optional ways to manage storage, not evidence that cloud files caused the post-update change.

If an update cannot finish because the drive is full
This is different from reclaiming space after an update has completed. Microsoft documents a feature-update workflow using an external storage device with at least 10 GB free, along with an internet connection, when internal storage is insufficient. Back up important files before using the device. The space needed varies with the update path and applicable optional content; an external drive is a contingency for this update problem, not a prerequisite for routine cleanup. See Microsoft’s Free up space for Windows updates.
What to avoid
- Do not remove the previous Windows installation unless you accept losing that rollback route.
- Do not select Downloads cleanup without checking for files you want to keep.
- Do not manually delete Windows system folders to chase an unexplained storage change.
- Do not assume a cleanup estimate, category label, or third-party utility identifies the precise cause; use Windows’ built-in breakdown and review the items it proposes to remove.
