There is no universal winner: Netflix is a strong fit for on-demand shows, movies and games across several plan tiers; Hulu is a better match if you want current-season episodes or may want live TV and sports. Choose by checking the titles you care about, your tolerance for ads, your household’s screens and whether live channels matter. This comparison covers US plans and offers listed on official pages accessed October 4, 2026; prices, catalogs and availability can change.
Start with what you want to watch
Choose by title, not catalog reputation
Netflix describes its offering as movies, TV shows and games. Hulu promotes full seasons, Hulu Originals, movies, kids’ shows and current-season episodes, often available the day after broadcast subject to its stated conditions. Those descriptions do not establish which service has the better overall catalog, and licensing changes over time. Search each service for the particular shows, films or games you want before subscribing.

When release timing matters
If you follow broadcast-season shows, Hulu’s next-day availability for some current-season episodes may be useful. It is not a guarantee for every show: check the title’s listing and applicable availability conditions.
Compare the US prices—and what each price buys
The figures below are monthly prices listed on official US pages accessed October 4, 2026. They are not all like-for-like plans: Hulu’s listed bundle includes three services, while Netflix’s figures are for Netflix plans.

Decide whether a bundle replaces subscriptions you already pay for
The Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ bundle may make sense if your household would use all three services. Compare its price with your actual alternatives and existing subscriptions; the listed bundle savings are measured against separately purchasing those services at regular prices, not against Netflix alone.

Know what “ad-free” covers
Netflix
Netflix’s US listing offers one ad-supported plan and two ad-free plans. Some titles may be unavailable on the ad-supported tier, so check for a specific title if it is a deciding factor.

Hulu distinguishes its ad-supported plan from a no-ads option for the Hulu streaming library. Hulu says a few shows may still have short ad breaks before or after episodes because of streaming rights. With Hulu + Live TV, live channels have ad breaks; the premium option that removes ads applies to the Hulu streaming library, not live and on-demand content available through Live TV. “No Ads” therefore does not mean every Hulu stream is ad-free.

Check screens and household rules
Netflix device limits and household sharing
Netflix lists simultaneous streaming on two supported devices for Standard with ads and Standard, and four for Premium. Its download limits are different; see the offline-viewing section below. Netflix says an account cannot be shared outside the household, defined around devices connected to the internet at the main residence. Eligible plans may add paid extra members; check the account’s current options and conditions.
Hulu + Live TV screens and extra members
Hulu’s Live TV page says the streaming library can play on two screens at once. An Unlimited Screens add-on provides unlimited screens at home plus three on the go, subject to premium-network restrictions. Hulu’s extra-member help article says a Hulu or bundle subscription may add one eligible person outside the household, subject to age, region and existing-subscription conditions. That option is not available with Hulu + Live TV.

Plan for downloads and travel
Netflix lists downloads on two supported devices at a time for Standard with ads and Standard, and six for Premium. Hulu says subscribers can download select titles to supported devices for offline viewing, but its cited page does not give a directly comparable tier-by-tier device count. Check both that your chosen title is downloadable and that your device is supported before relying on offline access.

Choose Hulu + Live TV if live channels and DVR are priorities
Hulu + Live TV is the more direct match of these options if you want live channels, local news, sports and recording in one service. Hulu lists 100+ channels, including major broadcast and sports networks where available, and unlimited DVR for live TV. Recordings can be stored for up to nine months and fast-forwarded; the unlimited-DVR statement does not apply to on-demand shows. Channel lineups depend on location, and regional restrictions and sports blackouts apply. Netflix’s cited US plan comparison lists on-demand entertainment and games, not a comparable live-channel package.
Before subscribing, check Hulu’s lineup for your location and confirm that the networks and sports rights you need are available. Live-channel ads still apply. Source: Hulu + Live TV; Netflix plan details: Netflix plans and pricing.

A practical way to make the choice
- List the must-watch titles. Search both services for the exact shows, films or games rather than relying on general catalog claims.
- Set your monthly budget. Compare Netflix’s individual tiers with Hulu’s options, and count a bundle’s value only if you would use the included services.
- Pick your ad boundary. Decide whether ads on a lower-cost plan are acceptable, and remember that Hulu’s no-ads library option does not remove every rights-related or live-TV ad break.
- Count simultaneous viewers and addresses. Match the plan’s screen limit and household rules to how your household actually watches.
- Check travel needs. Confirm that the titles you want are downloadable and that the device limits suit you.
- Add live TV only if you need it. Verify local channels, sports availability, blackouts and DVR needs before paying for Hulu + Live TV.
