Why Did Firefox Screenshots Disappear from My Browser?

Firefox retired hosted screenshot storage, not Screenshots itself. Check the toolbar, version-specific controls, preferences, and administrator policies if the button is missing.

Firefox Screenshots was not discontinued when Mozilla retired its online screenshot-storage option in 2019. You can still capture, download, and copy screenshots; if the control has vanished, it may have moved, been removed from the toolbar, been disabled in settings, or been blocked by a browser policy.

What changed—and what did not

Mozilla announced on January 24, 2019, that it would retire the option to save screenshots to a server hosted by Firefox. The change did not remove the built-in capture feature: Mozilla said users could still capture visible areas or full web pages, then download the image or copy it to the clipboard. The hosted uploads were due to stop with Firefox 67, scheduled for May 2019, with a period to export permanently saved shots extending into late summer. Mozilla’s announcement explains the distinction.

Mozilla said downloading and copying had become more popular than saving to its server, and that it wanted to simplify the service around those options. The announcement reported that more than 20 million people used Screenshots to take nearly 180 million screenshots in 2018; those are historical figures, not current usage statistics.

Find the screenshot control in your Firefox version

The button’s location has changed over time. In Firefox 88 and later, Mozilla Support directs users to add the Take a Screenshot button to the toolbar instead of relying on the older page-actions location. Interface details can vary by release, so use the controls visible in your current Firefox.

  3. Try the keyboard shortcut. Mozilla Support documents Ctrl+Shift+S for Windows and Linux. If it does not work, consult support for your current release and operating system.

If the button is missing everywhere

Check whether screenshots are disabled

A Firefox Support discussion suggests checking the screenshot-related preferences when the control is absent. In the Firefox 120-era answer, the suggested states were extensions.screenshots.disabled = false and screenshots.browser.component.enabled = false. These are version-specific troubleshooting details, not universal instructions for every release. Before changing an unfamiliar preference, follow Mozilla’s current support guidance: Mozilla Support discussion about a missing screenshot icon.

Check for a work or school policy

Mozilla Support notes that an administrator policy can disable screenshots. If you use a managed work or school browser, contact its administrator rather than trying to override an organization’s policy. The same support discussion covers policy and preference checks: Mozilla Support.

If you need screenshots from a website in an application or workflow rather than from Firefox’s own interface, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
