An AI detector’s score is an inference about patterns in a passage, not proof of who wrote it. Results can change with the detector, the amount of text, the model that generated it, and how the passage was edited. That is why a detector result is best treated as a lead for review—not a verdict about authorship.
What an AI text detector can—and cannot—tell you
Most AI text detectors examine a passage after it has been written. They use statistical or learned patterns to estimate whether the text resembles machine-generated writing. A score reports the tool’s assessment under its method and threshold; it does not establish provenance, identify an author, or show how a passage was produced.

A 2025 survey distinguishes watermarking, statistical, neural, and human-assisted detection approaches, and notes continuing challenges in evaluation and real-world use. The survey is a useful reminder that “AI detection” is not one uniform technique.
Two different approaches: pattern detection and watermarks
Post-hoc pattern detectors
These tools infer likely origin from features of the finished text. Perplexity and variation in sentence length—sometimes called “burstiness”—are examples of signals that may be examined. Such cues are not universal signatures: people can write predictable prose, and generated text can be edited into many styles. A signal can support an estimate, but it cannot by itself prove authorship.

Watermarks embedded during generation
A watermark is different: the generation process deliberately introduces a detectable signal, which a checker later looks for. This requires a compatible watermarking method and a way to check for it. It is not a universal mark automatically present in every AI-generated passage, and the result depends on the watermark scheme, the text available, and changes made to the text.
Why detector results change from one case to another
Length and available signal
A short passage gives a detector fewer observations to work with. It may not contain enough evidence for a useful estimate, even when the tool can return a numeric score. In a 2026 comparison spanning multiple model sizes, watermark methods, detectors, obfuscation techniques, and text lengths, automatic detectors performed better than watermark detectors on short synthetic text within that study’s tests. That finding is specific to the evaluated methods and conditions, not a rule for every detector.
Model, subject, and distribution
A detector evaluated on particular models, topics, or writing styles may not perform the same way on unfamiliar ones. Changes in the source model or the text distribution can affect whether the patterns it learned remain informative. The 2026 comparison found no method that was consistently best in every tested scenario.

Editing, paraphrasing, translation, and mixed authorship
Rewriting can weaken or alter statistical patterns, while a human-edited passage may combine generated and human-written material. Translation and other transformations can change the text too. A detector’s result should therefore be interpreted in light of what transformations were tested; evidence from one editing attack does not establish how every tool will respond to every kind of revision.
Thresholds and false positives
A detector score only makes sense alongside the threshold used to label text and the false-positive rate measured at that threshold. A false positive is human-written text labeled as AI-generated. If a result is being used to question someone’s work, the relevant question is not simply “What score did it give?” but “What error rate and evaluation conditions support this decision?”
What published paraphrasing studies show
Paraphrasing has substantially reduced detection in some published experiments, but those results apply to the specific methods tested. Sadasivan and colleagues’ 2023 paper, Can AI-Generated Text be Reliably Detected?, reports that recursive paraphrasing can reduce detection rates while often only slightly degrading text quality. The authors write: “Our findings indicate that while our recursive paraphrasing method can significantly reduce detection rates, it only slightly degrades text quality in many cases.” Read the paper.

In a separate 2023 study, Krishna and colleagues reported DetectGPT accuracy falling from 70.3% to 4.6% under their evaluated DIPPER paraphrasing attack, at a fixed 1% false-positive rate. This is a result for one detector and one experimental setup—not a current accuracy estimate for AI detectors as a category. Read the study.
Watermarks can be vulnerable, but they are not all equally fragile
Watermark robustness depends on the method and the attack. In a 2023 study of a particular watermarking method, Kirchenbauer and colleagues found that detecting watermarked text after strong human paraphrasing required observing an average of 800 tokens at a false-positive rate of 1e-5. That is a study-specific result, not a minimum-length requirement for all watermark checkers. Read the paper.
A 2025 study by Harel-Canada and colleagues complicates the idea that paraphrasing always erases a watermark. In their tests, 100% of perturbed texts retained traces after hundreds of edits; automated attacks removed watermarks 26% of the time, and a human-quality-reviewed variant removed them 10% of the time. Those figures concern the watermark and attack methods the study examined; they do not prove that every watermark is robust. Read the study.

Together, these results argue against a universal claim that watermarks either always survive editing or are easily defeated. The method, amount and type of text, and transformation all matter.
What I built anyway: a detector designed to report evidence
In a September 24, 2026 DEV Community post, Chen Jiayan describes building a detector at detectaiwatermarks.com. According to the post, it returns a confidence score and explains which signals fired, with examples including perplexity, sentence-length variance (“burstiness”), and a watermark scan. The author also says its verdict is calibrated by input length and that short text should receive “not enough signal” rather than a guess.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →These are the builder’s descriptions of the product and its design, not an independent evaluation of its implementation, availability, or detection performance. The broader design principle is still useful: a responsible detector should explain what evidence it used, state uncertainty, and abstain when there is too little text to support an informative estimate.
How to assess a detector result
Before treating a score as evidence about authorship, ask what supports it:
Quick Recap
- What kind of method is it? Is the tool inferring patterns after the fact, or checking for a watermark inserted during generation?
- How much text was evaluated? A short excerpt may not offer enough signal for a confident estimate.
- What was tested? Look for the models, topics, editing or paraphrasing conditions, and text lengths included in the evaluation.
- What threshold and error rate apply? Ask how often human-written text was falsely flagged at the threshold used.
- Does the result explain its limits? A score without method details or a way to express insufficient evidence should not be treated as a complete account.
- Is the decision consequential? Use detector output as one lead for a fair review, not as the sole basis for an accusation or authorship finding.
