A blank desktop snapshot after a terminal disconnect has no single confirmed cause. The first step is to identify what disconnected, which desktop session remained active, and where the snapshot was taken. An RDP disconnect, closing an SSH terminal, ending a remote-support session, logging off, and shutting down the host are different events—and can leave different displays and processes behind.
Start by identifying the session and the snapshot source
Before changing settings, establish three facts: the host operating system, the kind of session that ended, and the display path used for the snapshot.

- What ended? Distinguish disconnecting an RDP client, closing a terminal emulator, ending an SSH shell, disconnecting a Linux remote-support viewer, logging off, and shutting down.
- What was captured? Was the snapshot taken inside the remote session, from the host console, from a physical monitor, or from a separate virtual display?
- What does “blank” mean here? A blank image can mean the session is still alive but its display is unavailable, the capture targets a different session, a headless host has no usable display mode, or an application has exited while a background process keeps a session open.
These distinctions matter because a blank image is an observation, not a diagnosis. The symptom alone does not establish which cause applies.
Windows: disconnecting is not logging off
On Windows Terminal Server, disconnecting a user session can leave its processes and virtual memory in place so the same user can reconnect to the existing session. Logging off ends the session and terminates its processes. Microsoft describes this difference in its Terminal Server documentation.

That persistence does not guarantee that a snapshot taken elsewhere will show the remote desktop. Windows can have remote and console terminals attached to different sessions. Remote graphics use a remote display driver, while local display capabilities are associated with the console terminal. If the capture switches to the console, or targets a display path that is no longer active, it may not show the session you expected. Check which session and display the capture source is actually reading before treating the session as terminated.
A narrower RemoteApp blank-background case
Microsoft documents a specific case in which a RemoteApp session that starts a program at logon may not terminate promptly after that program exits because a spawned process remains running. The documented printing-related example involves splwow64.exe, which has a three-minute timeout in that scenario. Only investigate this branch if the symptom is a blank RemoteApp background after the launched program closes. Confirm that the lingering child-process scenario matches before considering any registry workaround; do not apply registry changes just because a snapshot is blank.

Linux remote-support behavior depends on the application, display server, display manager, and whether the host has a usable monitor or display mode. A viewer disconnect can therefore coincide with a capture that has no usable desktop to read, even if that is not the same as the desktop session having been deliberately logged out.

- Check the active display server. Determine whether the desktop session uses Wayland or X11, then confirm that the remote-support application supports that combination. Do not disable Wayland as a blanket fix: instructions vary by product and display manager.
- Check monitor enumeration and resolution. Confirm that the host reports an active, usable display and mode at the time of capture. This is particularly important on headless systems.
- Review product-specific setup instructions. Zoho Assist’s Linux blank-screen troubleshooting guide gives application-specific diagnostics and notes that configuration steps differ by display manager.
If the host lacks a usable display mode, a physical or virtual display configuration may be relevant. A display emulator is one possible approach, but the cited troubleshooting guide does not test or guarantee compatibility for any particular hardware. Verify the missing-display condition first rather than buying hardware based on a blank snapshot alone.
Choose a session model that matches the persistence you need
If you need a Linux desktop to keep running and be available after a viewer disconnects, use a session model designed for reattachment. Xpra desktop mode documents a separate desktop session that continues running and can be reattached. It is distinct from shadow mode, which is for sharing an already-running desktop: a separate Xpra desktop is not a mirror of the physical display.

If your setup and sequence match that case, its page says to disable “Blank the physical screen when somebody connects” as a workaround.
