How to Capture Mouse Interactions in Selenium WebDriver Screenshots

Perform the Selenium pointer action first, then capture the current page or a specific element while the state you need is still visible.

To capture a mouse interaction in Selenium, first perform the pointer action with the Actions API, then take a screenshot while the resulting page state is still visible. Use a screenshot of the current browsing context when you need the surrounding page; use an element screenshot when you need only a particular element. Selenium documents these as separate APIs—there is no special-purpose mouse-interaction screenshot command.

What a Selenium screenshot captures

Selenium’s Actions API supplies virtualized keyboard, pointer (mouse, pen, or touch), and wheel input. Its convenience methods cover common gestures, and you can combine actions into a sequence and perform it. The Actions API documentation describes it as “A low-level interface for providing virtualized device input actions to the web browser.” (Selenium Actions API.)

After the action, Selenium’s screenshot API captures either the current browsing context or an individual element. The screenshot endpoint returns Base64-encoded image data. A page screenshot is the better choice when the interaction’s surroundings matter; an element screenshot is for a narrower visual record. Do not assume the element image will include a pointer outside the element, or that the cursor itself will appear: Selenium’s screenshot documentation does not establish cursor visibility across browser and driver configurations. (Selenium screenshot examples.)

Capture a hover or other pointer action in Python

This example moves the pointer to a target element and saves a screenshot of the page. Replace the URL and selector with the page and element you want to test. It assumes a Selenium WebDriver driver is already configured and that the target element is available on the page.

from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.common.action_chains import ActionChains

# driver is an initialized Selenium WebDriver instance
driver.get("https://example.com")

target = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, ".menu-item")
ActionChains(driver).move_to_element(target).perform()

# Capture the current browsing context after the pointer action.
driver.save_screenshot("hover.png")

The Python mouse guide uses ActionChains(driver).move_to_element(element).perform() for this pattern. The target must be in the viewport for pointer movement. A screenshot records what is present at capture time, so a transient hover menu or tooltip must still be visible then. Selenium’s documentation does not specify a universal delay or timing recipe for transient states. (Selenium mouse actions.)

Choose the right screenshot scope

Capture Use it when Python example
Current browsing context You need the interaction and surrounding page state. driver.save_screenshot("page.png")
Single element You need the rendered image of a specific element rather than the full context. target.screenshot("element.png")

These methods save screenshot files from the current page or selected element. If you need to work with the Base64 data returned by the screenshot endpoint instead, use the screenshot API for your Selenium binding; method names and return handling can vary by binding. The documented examples distinguish page and element screenshots, but do not promise that either includes a visible cursor. (Selenium screenshot examples.)

Capture clicks, context clicks, double clicks, and drags

The same sequence applies to other mouse gestures: locate the relevant element, perform the action, then take the screenshot at the point where the desired visual state is on screen. Selenium’s mouse guide documents moving to elements, pressing and releasing buttons, click-and-hold, context click, double click, and drag-and-drop. It also supports movement relative to the viewport and the current pointer location. (Selenium mouse actions.)

For a click that changes the page, capture after the resulting state has appeared. For a drag, capture after the drop if you need the result, or during the gesture only if your automation and browser leave the intermediate state visible for capture. Selenium’s docs establish the gestures and screenshot APIs, not a universal method for freezing a specific animation frame.

Important viewport and interactability behavior

  • Pointer movement requires an in-viewport element. The mouse guide notes that an element used for pointer movement must be in the viewport.
  • Scrolling does not reposition the pointer. Selenium’s mouse guide says pointer position does not change when the page is scrolled. If you scroll and then move relative to the current pointer, account for that unchanged position.
  • Element interactions may scroll automatically. Selenium scrolls an out-of-viewport element into view and checks interactability for element interactions.
  • Clicks can be intercepted. If another element obscures the target’s center, a click can fail with an intercepted error. Make the intended target unobstructed before clicking or adjust the page state.

These behaviors are described in Selenium’s mouse actions guide and element interaction guide.

Common problems and fixes

  • The hover target is rejected or missed: Check that the element is in the viewport before using move_to_element. Locate the intended element again after navigation or a page update.
  • The screenshot shows the page but not the expected menu or tooltip: The state may have disappeared before capture. Trigger the pointer action, then capture while the state remains visible. Selenium’s docs do not prescribe a fixed wait for every site or transient effect.
  • The click reports that it was intercepted: The click point may be covered by another element. Inspect what overlaps the target and wait for or remove the obstruction before clicking.
  • The captured element image lacks surrounding context: Use a current-browsing-context screenshot instead of an element screenshot.
  • The cursor is absent from the image: Selenium’s reviewed screenshot documentation does not guarantee cursor rendering for each browser and driver configuration. If a visible pointer is essential, verify the output in the specific setup you use rather than assuming it is included.
  • Combined low-level input actions behave out of order: Selenium says users working directly with low-level action building blocks are responsible for synchronizing multiple input devices. Prefer a convenience method where it covers the interaction, or coordinate the device actions explicitly.
