The failure described by Serguey Shinder was a short, concentrated sign-in surge—not a shortage visible in hourly averages. His account says about 1,400 scanners and 200 shared terminals across 18 depots signed in over roughly six minutes at shift change. The lesson is to size and test the sign-in path for the busiest few minutes, not just for average hourly demand.
What happened at the six o’clock shift change
Shinder’s DEV Community post describes morning shifts beginning at six across multiple depots. Hourly capacity figures looked comfortable, but scanners showed a spinning indicator as workers signed in. Supervisors restarted devices, the first trailers were delayed, and the problem appeared at five depots. The author says the symptoms could initially have been blamed on the network.

According to his account, around 1,400 scanners and 200 shared terminals across 18 depots signed in over about six minutes. Each sign-in opened a warehouse-system session and requested an identity token. Those figures and the incident details are the author’s report; the post does not provide telemetry or an independent investigation.

An hourly average smooths demand across sixty minutes. A shift change can concentrate a large share of that demand into a much shorter interval, when many devices ask several services to complete work at once. As Shinder puts it, “A capacity figure averaged over an hour had hidden the one minute in which every one of them needed us at once.”

- Larger battery enables longer continuous usage and twice the stand-by time. With the unique battery indicator light showing the remaining battery level, no more Low Battery Anxiety.
- The curved handle is extended and widened. With specially designed smooth and flat trigger for a better grip.
- The orange anti shock silicone protective cover can prevent scratches and friction even when dropped from up to 6.56 feet. IP54 technology protects the wireless barcode scanner from dust.
- Plug and play with the USB receiver or the USB cable, no driver installation needed. Easy and quick to set up. Wireless transmission distance reaches up to 328 ft. in barrier free environment.
- Supports almost all 1D Barcodes: Febraban Bank Code, Codabar, Code 11, Code93, MSI, Code 128, EAN-128, Code 39, EAN-8, EAN-13, UPC-A, ISBN, Industrial 25, Interleaved 25, Standard 25, Matrix. Reads damaged, fuzzy, reflective and smudged barcodes.
The distinction matters because sign-in is a transaction across components, not a single device check. In the account, devices and terminals opened warehouse sessions, requested identity tokens, and relied on a session broker. A bottleneck or queue in one step could hold up the whole sign-in path even if the broader system appeared adequate over an hour.
What the author says compounded the delay
First-time worker profiles
Shinder reports that a first sign-in created an agency-worker profile and took about four times as long as a returning worker’s sign-in. That extra work landed in the same rush window as routine authentication.

Queued identity requests and retries
In the author’s diagnosis, the identity service queued requests while the session broker timed out and retried. Restarting scanners did not clear the underlying queue; it added more requests to it. This is the explanation reported in the post, not an independently verified root-cause analysis.
How the depot response changed the capacity plan
Shinder says the response addressed both the shape of demand and the work required during the surge:

- Continuous Usage All Day: The EY-H2 USB barcode scanner is designed to always be ready for the next scan, which significantly reduces downtime and repair costs; it shortens checkout lines, improves customer service, and boosts business productivity
- Plug and Play: Eyoyo wired barcode scanner is connected via a USB cable, with no need to install any driver or software; It offers effortless connection and is compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, and Linux; Seamlessly works with Quickbook, Word, Excel, Novell, and all common software
- Supports Multiple 1D/2D Barcodes: Eyoyo QR code scanner scan with most 1D 2D barcodes with ease; 1D Barcodes: EAN, UPC, Code 39, Code 93, Code 128, UCC/EAN 128, Codabar, Interleaved 2 of 5, ITF-6, ITF-14, ISBN, ISSN, MSI-Plessey, GS1 Databar, Code 11, Industrial 25, Matrix 2 of 5, etc. 2D Barcodes: QR, DataMatrix, PDF417, and so on
- Supports Screen Scanning: The Eyoyo 2D scanner is capable of reading barcodes from smartphone screens, such as mobile coupons, digital wallets, and digital loyalty cards; Before scanning, simply turn your screen brightness to the maximum
- Sturdy Anti-Shock and Durable Design: The Eyoyo 2D barcode scanner features an ergonomic design made of high-quality ABS, enabling it to withstand repeated drops from 5 ft/1.5 m high onto the concrete ground; The durable plastic material ensures a long service life
- Plan for the short peak: Write capacity plans against the first ten minutes of the busiest shift in the busiest week, rather than an hourly average.
- Replay the peak in testing: Load-test the same ten-minute window so the test exercises concentrated sign-ins and their downstream requests.
- Prepare agency profiles in advance: Create profiles the evening before booked shifts to move profile-building work out of the rush.
- Keep sessions alive: Maintain sessions through breaks and while scanners are cradled, reducing repeated sign-ins.
- Stagger starts where practical: Stagger zone start times at the three largest depots to spread simultaneous demand.
These measures target different parts of the problem: staggering spreads requests over time, advance profile creation removes work from sign-in, longer-lived sessions reduce repeat authentication, and peak-window replay checks whether the system can handle the real burst. The post does not provide comparative test results showing how much each measure contributed.
What the eleven-second rehearsal result establishes
Shinder writes, “In our peak rehearsal in August, the slowest depot had its whole shift signed in within eleven seconds.” That is the author’s reported rehearsal result. The post does not state the year or provide test records, so it should not be treated as an independently verified benchmark or a general performance guarantee.

- Widely Compatible: Bluetooth Barcode Scanner for iPhone iPad Android Tablet PC, Support HID / SPP / BLE mode via bluetooth, Work with Windows XP/7/8/10, Mac OS, Windows Mobile, Android OS, iOS, Linux.
- Strong Recognition Ability: With the 2500 pixels high-resolution CCD sensor Engine, Rapidly decodes all 1D and stacked barcodes (including ISBN book), even worn, damaged or tightly spaced codes. Scan 1D codes directly from paper or screen, such as a computer monitor, smartphone, or tablet, or scan through glass surfaces, plastic shrink wrap, a CCD scanner is likely the best way to go.
- Automatic Scanning: NT-1228bc barcode scanner have three scanning modes: manual trigger mode, continuous scanning mode and auto-sensing scanning mode. In addition, there is a storage mode. Storage mode can be used when you are out of range of Bluetooth and wireless connectivity. Supports storage of up to 100,000 barcodes. Note: Before use, you need to scan the corresponding setting barcode on the manual.
- 2600mAh Battery Upgraded: Continuous scanning up to 200,000 times on a full charge. After a full charge the scanner can be used for one month at least, even in warehouses and at pos checkout counters where scanners are frequently used. In libraries and hospitals it can be used even longer.
- Programmable Configuration: Add custom prefixes/ suffixes, delete characters, Add keyboard keys/ combinations (terminator TAB, CR&LF, Home etc.), Enable or disable the barcode type as you want. Buzzer can be set to mute to allow for a quiet operation.(Note: It does not work with square POS / Divalto / DoorDash / Lightspeed POS system)
A practical way to read the incident
The account’s central operational distinction is between total demand and when demand arrives. A system can appear adequately sized against hourly averages and still struggle when a shift’s devices authenticate together. For warehouses planning similar changes, the useful questions are whether the busiest short interval is represented in capacity planning, whether first-time setup adds work to that interval, and whether retries or restarts can increase queued demand.
