For an out-of-the-box surround setup, the UK-listed Samsung HW-Q990H stands out for its 11.1.4-channel system with rear speakers and a subwoofer included. The JBL Bar 1000MK2 is another surround-focused option, while the Sonos Arc Ultra is a better fit to consider if music and an expandable system matter more. The right choice depends on what comes in the box, how the soundbar creates height and surround effects, and whether your TV can pass the audio formats you want.

What Dolby Atmos means for a soundbar
A Dolby Atmos label indicates support for an audio format; it does not tell you how a particular soundbar creates the impression of sound above or around you. Systems use different combinations of built-in drivers, up-firing drivers, separate rear speakers and audio processing.
Up-firing drivers and reflected height effects
Crutchfield explains that up-firing drivers direct sound toward the ceiling so it reflects toward the listening area. The resulting height effect depends on the room and setup. The available product guidance does not establish a universal ceiling-height limit, so consult the manufacturer’s placement advice rather than relying on a generic numeric rule.
#1 Best Overall
- Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
- Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
- 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
- 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
- HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
Rear speakers versus processing
Separate rear speakers put physical speakers behind the listening position; a standalone bar instead relies more heavily on its built-in drivers and processing to create a surround impression. A soundbar with rear speakers can be a better fit if you want dedicated speakers behind you, but it needs suitable placement and space. Detachable speakers, such as those described for the JBL Bar 1000MK2, offer a different setup than permanently separate rears.
Choose by room, package and listening habits
For a complete surround package
The Samsung HW-Q990H is the clearest documented option here for buyers who want rear speakers and a subwoofer in the box. Samsung UK’s comparison lists it as an 11.1.4-channel Dolby Atmos and DTS:X system. That is UK manufacturer information: check the exact regional SKU, included components and local availability before treating the specification as universal.

For a surround system with detachable rears
The JBL Bar 1000MK2 is worth comparing if detachable rear speakers and a wireless subwoofer suit your room. SoundGuys selected it as its best Dolby Atmos soundbar, while RTINGS selected it as a mid-range pick in its April 30, 2026 update. The different labels do not make the picks directly comparable or establish a price tier for every market.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor music or a simpler footprint
Crutchfield’s Sonos Arc Ultra recommendation emphasizes music playback, with 14 built-in speakers, including side-firing and up-firing drivers, and broad music-service support. It is still a standalone soundbar unless you choose to build out a larger system; do not confuse the bar with a separately configured multi-speaker set.

For an all-in-one or bundle
Crutchfield categorizes the Sennheiser AMBEO Soundbar Max as an all-in-one and the Yamaha True X 90A bundle as a full package. Those formats answer different needs: one centers on a single soundbar, the other is presented as a package. Confirm the contents of the exact local listing before comparing them as complete systems.

- 5.1.2ch Surround Sound System: A 5.1.2-channel system featuring up-firing speakers, surround sound, and a powerful subwoofer creates lifelike, multidimensional audio. Feel the Sky Around You—raindrops falling from above, helicopters circling overhead, thunder rumbling in all directions. Sound isn’t just around you, it engulfs you, as if the ceiling disappeared. This is Dolby Atmos: not just heard, but felt.
- Up-Firing Drivers with Neodymium Core: The up-firing channels use neodymium internal magnets and 18-core large voice coils to enhance height precision and vertical throw. This aerospace-grade configuration ensures better high-frequency dynamics, delivering focused and elevated sound images that unlock the true potential of Dolby Atmos.
- 360° SurroundX Audio: SurroundX technology combines two rear surround speakers and dual up-firing Atmos drivers to build a true 360° sound field. Powered by intelligent spatial algorithms, the system precisely positions audio around and above you—enhancing Dolby Atmos with a more natural, three-dimensional soundstage. Note: Not compatible with DTS.
- Lossless Audio Transmission: Unlock full Dolby Atmos performance with HDMI eARC, supporting up to 37Mbps bandwidth for lossless 5.1.2-channel audio. Compared to regular ARC, eARC delivers richer detail and better surround effects with no compression. With CEC, your TV and soundbar work as one—power, volume, and input sync automatically for effortless control.
- Advanced App Control: Customize every detail of your audio experience with the Ultimea App. Fine-tune your surround sound with 13-step level adjustment (-6 to +6), optimize with a 10-band graphic EQ, and choose from 121 preset sound settings. Enjoy seamless OTA updates that unlock new features and keep your system performing at its peak.
Check the TV connection before you buy
For Dolby Atmos or uncompressed formats such as DTS:X from a compatible TV, Crutchfield recommends connecting through HDMI eARC. It also recommends an HDMI cable rated version 2.0 or better. Check the TV’s ports and audio support, the soundbar’s inputs, and the cable supplied with the product; the guidance is not a reason to buy a replacement cable automatically.
- Confirm that both the TV and soundbar support the audio format and connection path you intend to use.
- Check whether the TV port is eARC and whether the soundbar’s relevant HDMI input or output supports your desired setup.
- Verify the supplied cable’s capability before purchasing another one.
- If considering Sony Acoustic Center Sync, confirm that your television is a compatible BRAVIA model.
Why “best” lists disagree—and what to verify
Reviewers use different categories and priorities. Crutchfield’s June 2026 guide assigns use-case labels such as most immersive, best for music and best all-in-one. SoundGuys names the JBL Bar 1000MK2 its Dolby Atmos pick. RTINGS records a mid-range recommendation change in April 2026 and a large-room pick change in August 2026; TechRadar records an overall and premium pick change in August 2026. These changes show why a ranking should be read with its category, date and criteria, not as a permanent verdict.

Quick Recap
- Package contents: distinguish included rear speakers and subwoofers from optional add-ons.
- Room and placement: measure the bar against your TV stand or wall space, and plan where separate speakers can go. Check the manufacturer’s dimensions and placement guidance.
- Listening priorities: prioritize the relevant use—film immersion, music, dialogue, gaming or smart features—rather than assuming one model excels equally at all of them.
- Local model and availability: confirm the exact regional suffix, specification and in-box components. Rankings and product availability can change.
- Price: compare current local listings only after confirming they refer to the same model and package; no live local pricing is established here.
