Dan Houser says he is avoiding GTA 6 to protect his creative focus—not because he dislikes the game or expects it to threaten his own work. The Rockstar co-founder also says he limits open-world games generally because he finds himself analyzing how they were made instead of simply playing them.
Why is Dan Houser avoiding GTA 6?
Houser told Variety that he had not seen GTA 6’s extended reveal and would try to avoid it. In comments reported by GamesRadar+ and Video Games Chronicle, he described steering clear of material that could “distract or disrupt” him creatively.

His explanation was about protecting the way he works: he wants to think about new approaches rather than watch another team’s choices and compare them with what he might have done differently. That is a stated creative-focus habit, not evidence of hostility toward Rockstar or a verdict on GTA 6’s quality.

Houser said the same tendency affects his play outside GTA 6. When he plays open-world games, he starts evaluating the work behind them—the strengths and weaknesses of the teams, the design, and the decisions that may have shaped particular features. As he put it in remarks quoted by VGC, “I find when I play them, I can almost deconstruct the strengths and weaknesses of the team in real time and it’s distracting.”

That habit can turn play into analysis. Rather than experience a game on its own terms, he finds himself thinking about production choices and how a team arrived at them. Avoiding some games helps him keep his attention on his own creative work.
Is this a new reaction to GTA 6?
No. VGC reported that Houser described similar boundaries during his Rockstar years. While working on Red Dead Redemption, he said, he stopped watching Westerns; he also said he did not watch The Sopranos until after he left Rockstar. Those examples suggest the practice predates the current GTA 6 conversation and is not presented as a special response to that game.

What does this have to do with Houser’s new games?
Houser is now associated with Absurd Ventures. The interview-era project descriptions reported by GamesRadar+ include an open-world comedy focused on comedy and character memory, and a dystopian science-fiction game about a video game development going wrong and a sentient rogue AI. VGC likewise describes two open-world games, including a comedy action-adventure.
These are descriptions of projects at the time of the interview, not final specifications; details may change as development continues. The overlap helps explain why Houser is attentive to how other open-world games are built, but it does not establish that he is avoiding GTA 6 because he fears competition or wants to shield a particular game from influence.
