S&P Global Ratings has introduced a Vault Risk Assessment (VRA), a forward-looking opinion on the relative risk that an investor’s position in a digital asset lending vault could be impaired. The framework examines six risk dimensions, but it is not a credit rating, does not assess yield and does not guarantee an outcome. S&P said its first individual vault assessments would be announced later.
What S&P Global announced
Announced on October 4, 2026, the VRA is intended to add analysis of structural and operational risks to the transaction information visible on a blockchain. S&P describes it as applicable across different lending-vault structures and strategies, with a consistent approach intended to help readers compare assessed vaults. S&P’s launch announcement said individual assessments would follow in future announcements; it did not name any assessed vaults at launch.

What a digital asset lending vault is
A lending vault is a blockchain-based investment vehicle that pools deposits and deploys them according to a defined strategy, roughly comparable to a managed fund. The strategy may be executed through smart contracts, directed by professional managers, or combine both. Depositors typically receive share tokens representing a proportional claim on the vault’s assets and returns. S&P’s product description explains the structure and its intended assessment coverage.
Blockchain records can make transactions and current positions visible, but that visibility does not necessarily explain how the strategy is managed or how its risks could change. Disclosures may be limited or inconsistent between vaults, and transaction history alone offers limited insight into future risk. VRA is meant to assess beyond the observable activity on-chain.

The six risk dimensions in VRA
S&P identifies six risk factors in the framework. They are dimensions of the assessment, not necessarily six separately published ratings:
- Portfolio credit quality risk: risk associated with the credit quality of assets in the vault’s portfolio.
- Liquidity mismatch risk: risk arising when the liquidity of the vault’s assets does not align with the liquidity investors may expect from their positions.
- Curator risk: risk associated with the party responsible for designing or overseeing the vault strategy.
- Blockchain risk: risk connected to the blockchain on which the vault operates.
- Protocol risk: risk associated with the lending protocol or other protocol infrastructure used by the vault.
- Vault security and governance risk: risk relating to the vault’s security arrangements and how decisions about it are governed.
S&P’s public materials do not provide detailed definitions, weightings, evidence thresholds or full calibration for each factor. The methodology announcement says the underlying analytical approach report is available to RatingsDirect subscribers or by purchase request, so the public summary is not enough to infer how a particular factor affects an assessment.

What a VRA does—and does not—tell investors
A VRA expresses S&P’s forward-looking, relative view of the risk that an investor’s position in a lending vault could be impaired. It is not a credit rating and does not assess whether the vault can meet payment obligations in full. It is also not a guarantee of credit quality, an exact measure of a vault’s risk profile, or an opinion on the yield a vault offers. Investors should not treat a VRA as a prediction of returns or as a substitute for examining a vault’s strategy and disclosures.
S&P’s product page uses the suffix “v” and gives “AAA(v)” as an example at the lowest-risk end of its scale. That example should not be read as equivalent to an ordinary issuer credit rating. The public materials do not establish the complete scale or its detailed calibration. S&P’s VRA page and FAQ provide the public description; the more detailed approach is in the report available by subscription or purchase request.

Why S&P is entering the vault market now
S&P Global Ratings said total deposits in digital asset lending vaults reached US$10 billion as of September 2026, compared with US$1.5 billion in September 2024. Those figures are S&P’s estimates, stated in its October 2026 launch materials; they have not been independently verified here. The increase provides context for the launch, but it does not show how many vaults will seek assessments or whether investors will rely on them.
Yann Le Pallec, president of S&P Global Ratings, described demand for independent assessments as part of the institutionalization of digital assets. That is the company’s characterization of the market opportunity, rather than independent evidence of VRA adoption.

How to use a VRA when assessments are published
Once individual assessments become available, the relative opinion and the six risk dimensions can provide a structured starting point for comparison. A useful review should also establish what is being compared:

- How investors can access liquidity and how that compares with the vault’s assets
- The blockchain and protocols involved
- The vault’s security arrangements and governance
Because VRA does not assess yield or guarantee outcomes, a relative risk opinion cannot by itself determine whether a vault suits an investor. The assessment should be read alongside the vault’s own disclosures and the investor’s understanding of the risks involved.
