Cybersecurity providers that work directly with customers can help test AI-security claims against operational reality. Their value is not that the channel is automatically an authoritative referee; it is that managed security services providers (MSSPs) and other solution providers may see how tools behave in real environments, where a fast answer is not necessarily a correct or safe one.
Why customer-facing security providers can add perspective
AI-security claims are difficult to evaluate from demonstrations alone. Providers working inside customer environments may encounter how systems handle real signals, exceptions, and business constraints, and may notice patterns across more than one organization. That vantage point can make them useful interlocutors when a vendor says a task is automated or a decision can be made faster.

This is an argument about potential value, not evidence that channel providers as a group have changed AI product design or improved security outcomes. A provider’s perspective is still one input: buyers should ask what was observed, in which environment, and how the conclusion was checked.

In a CRN interview published September 10, 2026, Cyderes CEO Chris Schueler described AI as useful for gathering evidence, correlating signals, and automating repeatable security operations center (SOC) work. These uses can reduce manual effort and help teams move through routine tasks more quickly.

Schueler rejected the idea that this means security professionals can simply be replaced, calling that notion “ridiculous marketing jargon.” He said AI “will change the work and remove significant manual efforts,” while emphasizing that security still requires people who understand intent, business trade-offs, and exceptions.
How to evaluate an AI-security claim
Rather than asking only whether a tool uses AI, examine the task, the evidence behind the output, and what happens when it is wrong. A faster verdict can still create risk if it triggers an inappropriate response or misses context.
- Define the task: Is the claim about collecting evidence, correlating signals, recommending an action, or taking that action automatically?
- Identify human review: Who checks the output when intent, business impact, or an unusual exception matters?
- Ask for operational evidence: What has the provider observed in customer environments, and what conditions or limitations shaped that observation?
- Consider the cost of error: What happens if the tool’s conclusion is wrong, and is the response reversible?
- Check ownership and funding: Who is accountable for securing the organization’s AI adoption, and are resources assigned to that work?
What the budget anecdote does—and does not—show
Schueler told CRN that no CISO he had asked had told him they received incremental budget to secure AI. He called the situation “the biggest, scariest thing that I’ve ever seen.” CRN’s account provides no sample size, survey method, or independently verified budget figure, so this is an interview anecdote—not evidence that no organizations are funding AI security.

CRN’s September 10, 2026 analysis by Kyle Alspach, centered on its interview with Schueler for the Security or Else! series, makes a case for the channel’s operational vantage point. It also draws on perspectives from executives at CrowdStrike, Huntress, ThreatLocker, and Noma Security. Those named industry views are not a representative survey of providers.
Rank #3
The account offers commentary and analysis, not independent outcome data demonstrating that channel interventions have redirected AI product design or measurably improved security. The practical conclusion is narrower: customer-facing providers may help buyers scrutinize claims, but their observations should be assessed on their evidence and limits rather than treated as proof by virtue of the provider’s role.
