A crypto exchange hold can mean several different things: identity checks are pending, a bank transfer has not settled, a blockchain deposit needs more confirmations, or the exchange has applied a security or information check. Each has its own clock. A deposit may be usable for trading before it can be withdrawn, and completing identity verification does not necessarily clear a payment or security hold.
First, identify which clock is running
“Pending” or “on hold” does not identify the cause by itself. Exchanges distinguish among identity review, bank processing, network confirmations, withdrawal controls, and requests for additional information. Check the transaction or verification page for the exact status and instructions before estimating when funds will be available.

- Identity verification: The exchange is reviewing your documents or account details.
- Bank settlement: A cash transfer is still being collected from or delivered to your bank.
- Blockchain confirmation: The transaction is waiting for the required number of confirmations on its network.
- Withdrawal restriction: The funds may be present, but a payment method, new address, or account-security rule temporarily blocks withdrawal.
- Information or compliance check: The exchange needs a reference, ownership confirmation, or other transfer details.
These clocks are separate. A completed verification does not prove that a bank transfer has settled or that a crypto transaction has enough confirmations.

How long exchange identity verification can take
There is no supported industry-wide average. Timing depends on the exchange, application type, country, and whether the review is automated or manual. Kraken’s verification guidance, last updated October 1, 2026, gives these estimates:

| Kraken application or review | Published estimate |
|---|---|
| Standard verification, automated | Instant |
| Standard verification, manual | 45 minutes; Kraken warns a manual review can take a few days |
| Increased funding-limit verification | A few days |
| Business verification | 5 days |
These are Kraken estimates, not guarantees for other exchanges or a promise that a particular account will be approved within that time. Kraken also says funding access depends on country and may be limited regardless of verification level. While documents are under review, it advises: “Please avoid submitting multiple verification requests.” Kraken’s verification-processing guidance explains the categories and timing.
Why a cash deposit can be tradable but not withdrawable
A bank transfer may appear as available for buying, selling, or trading before the exchange has received the money from the bank. Coinbase says its cash deposit request is processed by the bank over three to five days, and the hold ends after Coinbase receives the cash. Its help page says this hold cannot be shortened. This is Coinbase’s stated process, not a universal bank-transfer timeframe. Coinbase explains cash deposit holds.

Payment method and location can also change withdrawal access. Kraken’s funding table, updated August 17, 2026, lists US ACH (Plaid) deposits as near-instant with a seven-day withdrawal hold, PayPal deposits as near-instant with a 72-hour withdrawal hold, and FedWire deposits as taking zero to one business day with no withdrawal hold. These are examples for the stated methods and US context; availability is country-specific, and the live table may change. Check Kraken’s current cash deposit options and processing table.

Why a crypto deposit may remain pending
An exchange can detect an incoming blockchain transaction before it considers the deposit final. The transaction must reach the confirmation count required for that asset and network. Coinbase Exchange gives Bitcoin as an example requiring two confirmations; the required number varies by asset. Node synchronization problems can prolong a pending status, usually by less than an hour according to Coinbase. If the network has not accepted the transaction, it may need to be broadcast again. Coinbase’s pending-transaction guidance describes these cases.

Use the transaction ID to check the transfer on the correct network’s explorer, and compare its status with the exchange’s deposit instructions. Do not send another transfer simply because the first is pending unless the exchange or network guidance indicates the original transaction was not accepted.
Security holds and withdrawal-address delays
Exchanges may restrict withdrawals after account changes or when a destination address is new. Kraken says a password change can trigger a hold of up to 24 hours on withdrawals to newly added addresses. Coinbase Exchange says an address added after its initial eight-hour window cannot be used for crypto withdrawals for 48 hours. That Coinbase restriction applies to use of the address, not a blanket lock on all crypto in the account. Kraken lists common deposit and withdrawal hold reasons; Coinbase Exchange explains address whitelisting delays.

Coinbase also says an available-balance hold can depend on account history, payment activity, and transaction history. A displayed release date may be extended because of a disputed transaction or account-safety concern, and Coinbase says support cannot reduce that hold. See Coinbase’s available-balance explanation.
Missing details, name mismatches, and ownership checks
Some holds require action rather than simply waiting. Kraken lists funding limits, a mismatch between the account and payment names, a missing deposit reference, an unverified account, duplicate payments, and irregular activity among possible reasons. Depending on the case, a hold may release automatically, require Kraken Support, or result in the deposit being returned. Follow the instructions shown for the specific transaction.

For crypto transfers, exchanges may also require information about who controls the originating wallet. Coinbase’s Singapore Exchange guidance gives a jurisdiction-specific Travel Rule example: an external deposit may be held until the originating address and an ownership attestation are recorded. This is a Singapore-specific process, not a general rule for every Coinbase customer or country. Coinbase describes its Singapore Travel Rule requirements.
For certain self-hosted-wallet ownership checks, Coinbase describes signing a message with the wallet or making a small test deposit. The test-deposit approach can take time and incur network fees; the guidance does not require a dedicated hardware wallet. Review Coinbase’s self-hosted wallet instructions.
What to check before contacting support
- Read the precise status and any requested action in the exchange account. Note whether it concerns identity, a cash transfer, a network deposit, a withdrawal, or wallet ownership.
- Check the account and payment names. Make sure the bank-account or payment-method name matches the exchange account details the platform requires.
- Confirm transfer details. Check that you used the correct deposit address, asset, network, and any required payment reference or memo.
- Verify the transaction on its network. Use the transaction ID and the relevant network explorer to see whether it was broadcast and how many confirmations it has.
- Contact the exchange if the status calls for manual intervention or asks for information you cannot provide through the account. Include the transaction ID and the exact on-screen status. A published hold period should not be treated as something support can necessarily override.
How to compare timing estimates
When reading a help page or asking support, make sure the estimate is for the same event you are waiting on. Compare the review type, payment rail, asset and network, residence, and whether you need trading access or withdrawal access. An estimate for identity approval cannot predict bank settlement, and a blockchain confirmation requirement says nothing about a bank withdrawal. Platform-published durations are process-specific examples, not industry averages or guarantees.
