Why Critics and Players Disagree About the Best Games

Critic and player scores come from different populations, methods and experiences. Here’s how to interpret a gap without treating either number as the whole story.

Critic and player scores can disagree because they come from different groups, use different rating systems and reflect different experiences of a game. A gap is a reason to compare the reviews and methods—not proof that critics or players are right.

What critic and player scores actually measure

They are not two readings from the same panel. Metacritic describes its Metascore as a weighted average of selected critics’ reviews; its community submits user ratings separately. Neither aggregate is automatically a representative poll of all critics, owners or players. Metacritic’s overview of its scoring and support information describe these distinct sources.

The platforms also turn opinions into numbers in different ways. A critic aggregate may weight publications, while a user score may be an average or another platform-specific measure. The number alone does not explain what reviewers liked, disliked or experienced.

Why the same game can prompt different judgments

People value different parts of a game

A player may care most about a particular mechanic, story, challenge level or the hours spent with friends; another person may care about a different part. Critics and players can therefore reach different conclusions without either group making an error.

A 2014 ACM CHI PLAY study surveyed 573 participants about player experience in relation to a current favorite game. The researchers found overlap between measured experience constructs and Metacritic scores, but also differences in how professionals and users appeared to allocate scores. They concluded that “Metacritic scores do not reflect the full complexity of player experience and may be misleading in some cases.” The study is useful context, not a definitive account of every game or modern rating platform. Critic and player samples are different

Critic aggregates draw from publications selected by an aggregator; community ratings come from people who choose to submit a rating on a platform. The groups, incentives and ways of participating differ. A user score is not necessarily the view of everyone who bought or played the game, just as a critic aggregate is not every critic’s opinion.

How Metacritic’s rules affect its critic score

Metacritic says it weights some critics and publications more heavily “based on their quality and overall stature.” That means the Metascore is not simply an unweighted average of every published review. Metacritic does not disclose a complete numerical formula on the cited help page, so readers cannot derive each publication’s precise influence from the public explanation alone. Metacritic also says it keeps a publication’s first review and score for a game. The site says this policy was introduced in 2003 to discourage pressure to raise scores or remove reviews. It is a published policy and rationale, not evidence that outside pressure affects every review. Even score labels need context. Metacritic says scores below 50 generally signal a negative review and scores in the upper 70s or higher usually indicate an unequivocally good game, reflecting conventions among gaming publications. Those are Metacritic’s stated conventions, not universal definitions of quality. Metacritic Support: What do the colors mean?

Why some player scores become polarized

A user score can reflect reactions to events around a game as well as judgments formed through play. Research on the user-rating episode around The Last of Us Part II examines ideological polarization in online ratings. Its authors collected 65,466 public Metacritic reviews for their study; that is the study’s sample, not the platform’s total rating count. The case shows why a highly polarized audience score deserves context, but it does not establish that all low user scores are coordinated or insincere. A 2024 preprint by Javier Coronado-Blázquez reported 0.88 validation accuracy for a natural-language-processing model distinguishing review-bombing cases from ordinary negative ratings in its defined sample of English-language Metacritic PC-game data. That is a result on one validation set, not an estimate of how often user scores are manipulated or a reliable test of any particular game without further validation. The preprint and its methods

How to interpret a critic-player score gap

Before deciding what a difference means, check whether the scores cover the same game and ask what each number represents. A critic score, user average, recommendation ratio and store review summary are not interchangeable.

  • Source and sample: Is the figure from selected professional publications or a platform’s community? How many ratings contributed, and who chose to submit them?
  • Release details: Do the ratings refer to the same platform and release? Were player reviews posted before or after major patches or substantial time with the game?
  • Aggregation method: Is the critic score weighted? Is the player figure an average, recommendation ratio or another calculation?
  • Reasons, not just numbers: Compare review arguments and player complaints. The stated reasons are more informative than a gap by itself.
  • Evidence of coordinated activity: Look for evidence before calling a score a review bomb. A low score alone does not establish coordination.

Comparison sites make their own judgment calls, too. VideoGamesCritic, for example, describes limits on which recent releases qualify, combines several player-rating sources and says it excludes some bombed Metacritic pools when larger player pools contradict them. Its methodology is an example, not a standard for measuring agreement. On October 4, 2026, it reported 465,837 critic reviews and 2,483,773 player reviews in its recent-games comparison; those live corpus counts can change and are not industry-wide totals. VideoGamesCritic’s comparison and methodology

What a disagreement can—and cannot—tell you

A gap can point to differences in taste, rating populations, aggregation rules, timing or polarized activity, often in combination. It cannot, on its own, identify which explanation applies or prove that one side is mistaken. Read the underlying reviews and check how each score was made before using it to decide whether a game suits you.
