Why Colors Look Muted on a Color E-Reader—and What You Can Do

Muted color is often a normal trait of color E Ink. Learn how display design and frontlight settings affect what you see, and how to compare devices.

Muted colors are often a normal limitation of color E Ink, not proof that your e-reader is faulty. On E Ink’s Kaleido 3, a color filter sits over a black-and-white E Ink layer; the manufacturer lists 150 ppi for color, 300 ppi for black and white, and 4,096 colors. Frontlight settings can change how colors appear, but they cannot change the panel’s underlying capabilities.

Why color E Ink can look washed out

Color E Ink works differently from the emissive screens on phones and tablets. E Ink describes its Kaleido 3 technology as a color filter array used with a Carta black-and-white E Ink layer. The filter-based design and published color specifications help explain why colors may look less saturated or detailed than they do on a phone, tablet, or printed image. E Ink’s Kaleido 3 technology page describes the display approach.

For Kaleido 3, E Ink lists up to 4,096 colors, 300 ppi in black and white, and 150 ppi in color. Those figures describe different modes: the black-and-white resolution is not the color resolution. The company’s April 7, 2022 launch announcement also said Kaleido 3 delivers 30% higher color saturation than the previous generation, Kaleido Plus; that is E Ink’s own comparison, not an independent measurement. E Ink’s launch announcement and its 7-inch Kaleido 3 module specification list these figures.

Not every color e-reader uses Kaleido 3, so its specifications should not be applied to every model. In a TechRadar review comparing the BOOX Note Air5 C with a device using Gallery 3, the reviewer described Gallery 3 as having better saturation in that comparison. That is an observation about those devices, not a controlled or universal ranking of display technologies. Read the TechRadar Note Air5 C review.

What to try on your current e-reader

Adjust the frontlight

If your reader has a frontlight, compare its current brightness with a brighter setting. The TechRadar reviewer reported that lowering brightness made the Note Air5 C’s display look dramatically darker; that observation applies to the reviewed model, not necessarily to other readers. Menu names and available controls vary by device.

Compare warm and cool light

On the reviewed BOOX Note Air5 C, the reviewer said warmer, yellow light affected displayed colors. Try a cooler setting when viewing color images, then use whichever setting looks more natural to you. This is a practical experiment, not a universal color-calibration rule.

Assess the screen in your usual reading conditions

Check color content in the lighting where you normally read and note which frontlight setting makes the image easiest to see. The goal is legibility and a pleasing appearance; changing brightness or color temperature does not expand the panel’s color gamut.

Consider whether the behavior points to a fault

If colors have always looked muted, that alone does not establish a defect. Compare the device’s display technology and published specifications before concluding that something is wrong. The cited manufacturer specifications do not provide a test for an individual device, so contact the maker or seller if the screen appears damaged or its behavior has changed unexpectedly.

What to compare if you are choosing a color e-reader

If color-rich material is a priority, compare specific devices and their display technologies before buying. Do not assume a different color E Ink panel will look like a phone screen.

What to compare Why it matters
Display technology Kaleido 3 and Gallery 3 are different technologies. The cited TechRadar review offers a comparison of particular devices, not a universal winner.
Color and black-and-white resolution For Kaleido 3, E Ink lists 150 ppi in color and 300 ppi in black and white. Check the manufacturer’s figures for the exact model.
Lighting controls Confirm that the particular model offers the brightness and color-temperature adjustments you want; controls vary by device.
Your content Text reading has different demands from color comics, charts, annotations, and illustrations. The specifications alone do not set a universal threshold for which device will suit you.

For comics, illustrated reference books, or color annotations, look at examples displayed on the exact device you are considering and weigh color performance against your other priorities. A different device may render color differently, but no cited evidence guarantees that it will eliminate the muted appearance associated with color E Ink.
