Cloud connected means a user, device, application, or system can reach cloud-hosted services—or exchange data with other resources—over a network. The connection is the route; cloud computing is the remote computing, storage, database, or application service reached through it. Internet access is common, but private links, VPNs, and provider networks can carry some cloud traffic instead.
What does “cloud connected” mean?
Think of a cloud service as a resource running on a provider’s infrastructure and connectivity as the path to that resource. That path lets a person open an online application, a company’s systems send data to a cloud database, or separate cloud resources communicate. AWS describes cloud computing as on-demand delivery of services such as computing, storage, databases, and networking through the internet; Microsoft likewise describes cloud computing as access to computing services over the internet. Cloud networking is the network side of that arrangement: connecting users, applications, and resources, often using virtual network components managed through a cloud platform. It is related to cloud computing, but the terms are not interchangeable. Computing provides the service; networking enables communication with and among services. AWS: What is cloud networking?

Why does the connection matter?
Cloud resources are hosted remotely, so users and systems need a working network route to reach them. That route also affects communication between cloud workloads, an organization’s existing data center, remote employees, or services hosted by another provider. AWS groups common connectivity needs around internet access, connections within a cloud environment, hybrid and multi-cloud links, and remote workforce access. - AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Network design has practical consequences: it influences latency, available bandwidth, reliability, security boundaries, data-transfer and connection costs, and who is responsible for operating the network. A path that works well for occasional access may not suit a workload that exchanges large amounts of data or needs a tightly controlled connection. AWS’s guidance treats these as design considerations rather than one-size-fits-all outcomes. AWS Networking Best Practices: Connectivity
Cloud networking also uses software-defined components in place of some manually managed physical network functions. AWS describes potential benefits such as easier management, faster provisioning, scalability, monitoring, and support for hybrid or multi-cloud environments. Those are possible benefits of a suitable design, not guaranteed results for every deployment. AWS: What is cloud networking?

How can cloud resources connect?
Public internet access
Many users reach cloud services through an ordinary internet connection. For a household, a device may connect over Wi-Fi to a router and then to an internet service. That local router is part of the access path; it is not itself a cloud service, and cloud access does not establish a need to buy a special router. Cloud resources are hosted by the provider. A virtual private network (VPN) can create an encrypted connection over an internet path, including between distinct network environments. A VPN changes how traffic is protected and routed; it does not mean the underlying internet connection disappears. AWS: Connectivity within the cloud environment

Private links and provider networks
Some cloud-to-cloud, cloud-to-site, or partner traffic can use provider backbones or dedicated physical connections rather than traversing the public internet. Google Cloud says its Interconnect traffic between connected networks does not traverse the public internet and takes fewer network hops. Supported connection types, capacity, and availability depend on location and provider; a private connection is not automatically faster, safer, or cheaper for every workload. Google Cloud: Cloud Interconnect overview AWS also notes that private connectivity may help reduce unnecessary data-transfer costs and may improve security, reliability, or latency in a given setup—not as universal guarantees. What do public, private, hybrid, and multi-cloud mean?
| Approach | What it connects or describes | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Public cloud | Cloud resources delivered through a shared public cloud platform. | Resources can be provisioned through the platform, but network design and security configuration still matter. AWS |
| Private cloud | Resources or traffic dedicated to one organization. | Offers greater isolation and control, alongside additional management responsibilities. AWS |
| Hybrid cloud | Connections between cloud resources and on-premises systems, or across public and private environments. | Useful when migration is staged or some systems remain on site; integration and the connection between environments need to be managed. AWS Google Cloud Blog |
| Multi-cloud | Connections among environments from more than one cloud provider. | Can provide flexibility, but coordinating policies and network operations across providers adds complexity. AWS AWS Networking Best Practices |
These labels describe different deployment arrangements; none alone tells you which network path a particular flow uses. For example, a hybrid setup might use a VPN or a dedicated connection for a cloud-to-site route. The right choice depends on the specific systems and traffic involved. How to choose a connection approach
For an organization planning cloud connectivity, compare the actual requirements for each route rather than assuming every workload needs the same design:
- Security and isolation: Identify which users and systems should be able to communicate, and what boundaries the connection must preserve.
- Latency and bandwidth: Consider how quickly data must travel and how much capacity the workload needs.
- Resilience: Decide how the service should behave if a connection or route becomes unavailable.
- Costs: Account for connection charges and data transfer, not only the cost of the cloud resource itself.
- Location and availability: Check which connection types and capacities are available where the systems operate.
- Operations: Establish who configures, monitors, troubleshoots, and maintains each part of the path.
A dedicated interconnect may avoid the public internet for selected traffic, but its value depends on location, capacity, cost, workload, and operational requirements. A VPN can provide an encrypted overlay on an internet path, but it is not identical to a dedicated physical link. Evaluate each route against the workload rather than treating “private” or “cloud connected” as a performance guarantee.
