A QR generator that renders your code on a remote server must receive the content it encodes. A generator that encodes and draws the code in your browser can avoid sending that payload to a QR-rendering endpoint. That distinction matters when the content is a Wi-Fi password, contact detail, or private link—but it does not, by itself, prove that every other part of a webpage is private.
What happens to your data when a QR code is made?
A QR code is a visual encoding of information such as a URL, Wi-Fi network credentials, or contact details. To render a code remotely, a service needs the payload: your browser sends the content to the service, and the service returns an image or other output. Receiving the content is not the same as storing or misusing it.

For example, goQR.me says its API receives submitted content but does not store QR contents. Its policy also describes logs and a short image cache. Those are the provider’s own disclosures, not independent verification. A surfaced user post described free generators sending entered content to their servers, but that anecdote does not establish how all free tools work.
With browser-local generation, a QR encoder runs in JavaScript on your device and produces the symbol there. OpenQR says its static generator works locally in the browser and does not upload the code contents. That describes its stated design; it is not proof that every browser-based generator—or every script on a page—handles data the same way.

Static and dynamic QR codes solve different problems
Static codes encode the destination or content directly
A static QR code contains the information you entered. When someone scans it, the scanner reads that information directly; the code does not need to contact the generator’s server. goQR.me says its ordinary generated codes work this way. If a static code contains a website address, changing the destination later generally means making and distributing a new code.
Dynamic codes add a service between the code and its destination
A dynamic code typically encodes a redirect managed by a provider. The provider can change the final destination or record scans because scans pass through its service. OpenQR describes dynamic destinations as stored server-side for redirecting and scan counts; goQR.me describes dynamic codes as an optional management and tracking service.

That intermediary can be useful when you need to update a destination after printing or want scan analytics. It also means the code’s behavior depends on the provider and its service. A dynamic code is not simply a static code with a different visual style: it has a different data flow and operational dependency.

Output format and print suitability depend on the implementation, not just whether it is local or remote. Check whether the tool exports SVG or a sufficiently large raster image, and test the exported code with the scanners and at the size you intend to use. Network and offline behavior are also implementation-specific; do not infer offline support from the phrase “client-side.”

How to build a browser-local generator
Client-side does not mean that the browser magically knows how to encode QR data. A QR encoding implementation or library must convert the input into the QR symbol’s modules. JavaScript can then render that result as SVG or draw it to a Canvas.
- Keep input and encoding in the browser. Read the form value locally and pass it to the QR encoder. Do not submit the payload to a rendering API if local generation is the privacy goal.
- Render an exportable result. SVG is a vector format that can scale cleanly; Canvas is a JavaScript drawing API that produces a bitmap. MDN notes that Canvas is widely available, but bitmap images can blur when enlarged.
- Make the result understandable beyond its pixels. Canvas content is not exposed to accessibility tools in the same way as semantic HTML. Include an accessible text equivalent or a clear description of the encoded content where appropriate, and ensure controls and instructions work with assistive technology.
- Inspect the complete page’s data flow. Local rendering protects the payload only from a QR-rendering endpoint. Analytics, third-party scripts, saved browser state, cloud features, accounts, and export flows may introduce other disclosures.
- Avoid placing sensitive payloads in URLs. A payload embedded in a page URL can appear in browser history, referrer information, or analytics. A local encoder does not neutralize those exposures.
- Verify rather than assume. Review the page’s network activity while generating a code, and check whether the tool continues to work without a network connection if offline use matters. These checks establish behavior for the tested page and environment, not a universal guarantee.
Does a QR code expire?
A static code has no built-in expiry merely because it was generated by a particular website: the content is encoded in the symbol, so it can still be read as long as it remains scannable and the encoded destination or information is still valid. A dynamic code can stop working or change behavior if its redirect provider disables the link or service. Whether a particular code expires is therefore a property of its content and service arrangement, not a universal QR-code rule.
