Clear phone cases can turn yellow as their materials age after exposure to sunlight, sweat, and smudges. Keeping a case out of direct sunlight and gently wiping away greasy residue can help limit avoidable exposure and remove surface grime—but cleaning cannot reliably reverse discoloration that has changed the plastic itself.
Why do clear phone cases turn yellow?
Huawei says its transparent TPU/PC protective cases can become yellowish with age after exposure to sunlight, sweat, or smudges. A European Patent Office publication likewise describes transparent TPU cases as prone to irreversible yellowing after use and identifies ultraviolet (UV) exposure as a cause. The patent’s wording is: “after being used for a specifc period of time, a transparent protective case made of a TPU material is prone to an irreversible yellowing phenomenon due to ultraviolet (Ultraviolet, UV).” Huawei’s support guidance and the patent publication describe different kinds of evidence: care advice and a technical disclosure, respectively.

Residue and material aging can look similar
A yellowed-looking case may have greasy smudges on its surface, discoloration within the material, or both. Surface residue may come off with gentle wiping; material that has chemically changed may remain yellow. The patent discusses a sweat- and cosmetic-residue pathway in its technical disclosure, but that is one proposed mechanism, not proof that every case yellows in the same way.

What manufacturers say about other materials
Case makers also cite UV exposure, heat, moisture, dirt, and hand oils in their explanations of discoloration. ESR discusses UV exposure and moisture or dirt while promoting its Krystec design; Mous points to UV, heat, and hand oils while promoting its PCTG material. These are manufacturer explanations and product claims, not independent comparisons establishing which case lasts longest. ESR’s explanation and Mous’s explanation should be read in that context.

How to slow yellowing and clean a case gently
- Limit direct sunlight. Avoid leaving the case in direct sunlight when practical; Huawei specifically recommends avoiding direct sunlight during everyday use.
- Keep it away from colored oily substances. Huawei names cooking oil and cosmetics as examples of substances to avoid contacting the case.
- Wipe greasy smudges gently. Huawei advises using a clean cloth dipped in water. A lint-free cloth is a practical choice for wiping without leaving fibers.
Huawei’s guidance does not call for a specialized cleaner. Because surface cleaning is different from reversing material aging, do not assume that a case that remains yellow after wiping needs a stronger chemical treatment. The cited guidance does not establish harsh cleaners or bleaching recipes as safe or effective ways to restore it.
When to replace a yellowed case
If the case’s condition affects normal phone use, Huawei recommends getting a new one. For replacement, check compatibility with the exact phone model and choose the protection and construction you need. Review the materials the maker actually discloses, and treat “anti-yellowing” as a claim to evaluate rather than a guarantee.

How to assess anti-yellowing claims
Look for a specific test description, including what was tested and for how long, instead of relying on a broad promise. ESR reports a 48-hour UV light-aging test for a named design in its article; that is ESR’s reported test, not independent proof that the case will remain clear for years. ESR’s article also promotes its own Krystec design.

The patent describes approaches such as UV absorbers, antioxidants, and protective layers intended to delay yellowing. Those technical embodiments do not establish the durability of a particular retail case. There is no basis here for a universal ranking of case materials or a promise that any clear case will stay clear indefinitely.
