Claude uses separate usage clocks: the five-hour session allowance can refill while the weekly allowance remains depleted. The weekly reset follows a schedule assigned to your account, so neither starting a new chat nor waiting for a session reset necessarily restores your weekly capacity. For your exact progress and next reset time, check Settings > Usage.
Why Claude has separate session and weekly resets
Think of the limits as two budgets that run at once. Anthropic says a paid plan’s session-based usage limit resets every five hours. A separate weekly limit has its own fixed reset day and time, assigned to the account. When the five-hour session allowance refills, that does not restart or refill the weekly allowance.

The weekly schedule is not calculated from the time you first used Claude or the date your subscription began. Anthropic says the assigned reset day and time stay the same across those events, and the full weekly allowance is provided each cycle. There is no universal weekday or time to rely on; the account’s Usage page shows the applicable schedule. Anthropic’s Pro plan guidance
What each limit measures
| Limit | What it applies to | Reset behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Session | Usage within the current five-hour session window on a paid plan | Anthropic says it resets every five hours. |
| Weekly | Usage within the account’s weekly allowance | Resets at the account-assigned day and time, shown in Settings > Usage. |
| Conversation length | How much content a single conversation can hold in its context | Not a time-based usage allowance; starting another chat may help with a conversation-length issue, but does not create fresh shared account usage. |
Anthropic distinguishes usage limits, which govern how much you can use across conversations, from length limits, which concern how long one conversation can become. Anthropic’s usage-limit best practices

Why one reset may happen while the other limit stays low
If Claude becomes available again after a session reset but the weekly meter remains near its limit, the meters are behaving independently: the session allowance refilled, while the weekly cycle has not yet reached its assigned reset. Follow the remaining time shown for the weekly limit rather than assuming the session reset changed its schedule.
Anthropic also describes a limit-reset option that may refill either the five-hour session allowance or the weekly allowance. The weekly limit still resets on its usual day and time; check Settings > Usage on Claude web or Claude Desktop for eligibility, expiry, and what the offered reset applies to. Does a new chat or another Claude app reset usage?
No. A new conversation does not create a new account-wide allowance. Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop activity counts toward the same account usage limit, so switching surfaces does not provide a fresh quota. A new chat can be relevant if the problem is a single conversation’s length, but that is different from replenishing usage. Anthropic’s usage-limit best practices
Why the allowance can run out sooner than expected
There is no dependable universal number of messages per session or week. Usage varies with the model and effort level, message and conversation length, attachments, tools, and features. Long conversations and large attachments can use more capacity; Research can use limits faster because it retrieves multiple sources and produces comprehensive responses. Anthropic says Research uses the same limits as standard conversations. Anthropic’s Research guidance

Project content reused across prompts may benefit from caching, according to Anthropic’s best-practices guidance, but that does not turn the session and weekly limits into one clock. Anthropic’s usage-limit best practices
Where to see your next reset time
- Open Claude and go to Settings > Usage.
- Check the session usage meter and time remaining separately from the weekly usage meter.
- Read the next weekly reset time displayed for your account. If an eligible reset offer appears, confirm which allowance it refills and any expiry shown before using it.
Anthropic’s Usage dashboard guidance says it shows current five-hour session usage and time remaining, as well as weekly progress and reset timing for Opus and other models. Subscriptions, credits, and API limits are different
Optional paid usage credits can let you continue after included subscription usage is reached, at standard API rates; Anthropic says credits are charged separately from the subscription. They do not change the ordinary five-hour session reset or explain the account’s weekly reset schedule. Anthropic’s extra usage guidance
