Check whether Claude supports the file
Anthropic’s Help Center says the Google Drive integration currently connects to Google Docs only. Google Sheets and Slides are not supported through this integration, so a failed attempt to add either one does not necessarily mean the connection is broken. Confirm your plan, setup and access
The integration is available to users on paid Claude.ai plans. In a chat, open the add-content menu, choose Google Drive, then select a recent document or paste its URL. On first use, follow the prompt to authenticate with Google.

- Use the right Google account: Authenticate with the account that can view the Doc in Drive. Anthropic states, “You can only sync documents that you have permission to view in Google Drive.”
- Check the specific file’s access: A URL does not bypass Drive permissions. If the Doc is shared with another account, switch accounts or ask its owner to grant view access.
You can also add Docs to private project knowledge. Added documents sync from Drive, including later versions. Multiple Docs can be added to a chat if they fit within its context window. If you lose access to a Doc, its preview is removed from conversations where it was added, but the conversation history remains.

Reconnect Google Drive in Claude
If Claude displays “Please try again. You may need to reconnect with your Google Drive account,” use Anthropic’s recommended reconnect sequence:
- In Claude, open Settings > Integrations.
- Find Google Drive, open its more-options menu and choose Disconnect.
- In a chat, choose the Google Drive option from the add-content menu and authenticate with Google again.
After reconnecting, test access by asking Claude to use Google Drive and identify the Doc by name or URL. Anthropic’s connector guidance recommends explicitly naming the tool and a specific item when checking a connection. Read the connector guidance.

Reset Claude’s authorization in Google
If reconnecting from Claude does not resolve the error, remove the existing authorization on Google’s side, then connect again:

- Find Claude for Google Drive and delete all connections with that name.
- Return to Claude and authenticate with Google again from the Google Drive option.
If you use Claude for Work
If Google Drive is unavailable or you cannot enable the integration in a Work organization, ask an Owner or Primary Owner to check the organization’s integration settings. Anthropic’s roles guide assigns enabling native integrations to those roles. See Anthropic’s roles and permissions guide.

Know what a working connection can read
Connecting successfully does not mean Claude can interpret every part of a document. The integration extracts main text; it cannot interpret images in synced Docs or access comments and suggestions. Anthropic lists a 10 MB limit for Google Docs. It also says .docx files are unsupported through this integration; convert a .docx to Google Docs if you want to use it this way.

Anthropic’s public guidance does not establish that persistent failures are necessarily caused by a Workspace administrator policy, a temporary outage or a particular account state. If the steps above fail, contact your Workspace administrator or Anthropic support. Include the exact error message, whether you are adding a Doc, Sheet or Slide, and which account you authenticated with. That detail helps distinguish an unsupported file type from an access or connection issue.
