Chrome’s on-device AI model may not download because the device is ineligible, the On-device AI setting is off, the connection is metered, there is not enough free space, device performance is insufficient, or an enterprise policy blocks it. Start by checking Chrome’s setting and Google’s requirements; if a download was interrupted, Chrome may resume it in the background. A missing Gemini icon is a separate issue and does not prove the local model download failed.
First, identify which Chrome AI feature is failing
Chrome’s on-device Generative AI models support browser features such as writing help, scam warnings, page summaries, and tab organization. Google documents on-device model management separately from Gemini in Chrome, which has its own rollout and eligibility conditions.

If the problem is that a Gemini icon is missing or its panel will not open, use the Gemini checks below. Do not treat that symptom by itself as evidence that Chrome’s local model download is broken.

- In Chrome, open More > Settings > System > On-device AI.
- If the setting is off, turn it on to allow required model downloads.
- Allow Chrome time to download the model in the background.
Google says turning off On-device AI deletes the model files and prevents them from downloading again while the setting remains off. Google does not recommend manually searching for and deleting model files; that may not prevent a later download.

Check connection, storage, and device eligibility
Google says models download only on eligible devices, and its consumer support page lists these requirements for Chrome’s on-device Generative AI model download:
- Unmetered network connection: try a connection that is not marked as metered.
- Approximately 20 GB of free disk space: check the volume Chrome uses.
- Sufficient device performance: hardware eligibility is assessed by Chrome; not every device receives a model.
Google notes that these requirements may change. For developer-built-in AI APIs, a separate Chrome for Developers guide specifies at least 22 GB free on the volume containing the Chrome profile. It also lists GPU inference requiring strictly more than 4 GB of VRAM, or CPU inference requiring 16 GB or more of RAM and 4 or more CPU cores. These API-specific figures are not interchangeable with the consumer page’s approximate 20 GB requirement.

Give an interrupted download a chance to resume
Chrome’s download behavior depends on the trigger. For built-in AI APIs that use Gemini Nano, the first call to a relevant API’s *.create() function starts the initial model download; the download can proceed in the background after the initiating tab closes. Chrome for Developers says an interrupted download can resume when connectivity returns. If Chrome itself closes, reopen it within 30 days for the download to resume.
Chrome checks device hardware and selects a model variant or CPU fallback where supported. An unsupported device will not receive a model, so repeatedly restarting the same download will not make ineligible hardware eligible.

Use diagnostics when a developer API download is stuck
- Restart Chrome.
- Open
chrome://on-device-internalsand select the Broker State tab to look for errors. - In DevTools, check whether the relevant API is available. The Chrome for Developers guide gives
LanguageModel.availability()as an example.
These diagnostics are aimed at local development and built-in AI API testing; they are not required steps for every consumer feature.
Check Gemini in Chrome separately
Gemini in Chrome is rolling out gradually. Google’s computer help page says availability depends on using a supported Chromebook Plus, Mac, or Windows computer, current Chrome, a signed-in profile, supported device language and region, and an eligible age. Incognito and unsigned-in profiles are excluded.

If Gemini itself is unavailable, Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends restarting Chrome, updating it, turning off a VPN if it may interfere with region detection, reloading the Gemini panel, resetting flags as an advanced step, and exiting a virtualized environment. On managed devices, ask the administrator whether the feature is disabled.

Check enterprise controls on managed Chrome
Chrome Enterprise policy can govern on-device model download and use. For Gemini in Chrome on managed installations, Google’s administrator troubleshooting page says to inspect chrome://policy for GeminiSettings and GeminiActOnWebSettings. If the computer is managed by work or school, an administrator may need to review or change the applicable policy.
